Even being so much famous word, Yakuza's original history from 17th century still much talked less, it's good thing about this doc. that you pointed out everything. Other docs. though very vaguely focus from industrial revolution in Japan or it start from Yakuza's presence after WW2. Lol it will attract much views in future.... great job.

It's wild how deep the roots go, I had no idea that the yakuza were used for so many anti-communism and anti-labor causes. Wasn't too surprised to hear about the connection to right-wing nationalism, given all of the "keeping worse foreign crime out of Japan" rhetoric, but the details are still super fascinating. Great stuff!

Dear ANIKI, Thank you for a well researched and developed piece. Organized crime entities exist in all societies because they serve a purpose, in South America and Mexico the organized crime entities such as Colombia’s National Liberation Army ( ELN ), or Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel are entities in scale of weapons, and wealth that far, far outstrip the height of the YAKUZA, and this is fueled be the demand for illegal drugs, in Canada, Europe, and most importantly the United States. When the society determines it is its best interests to eliminate such organizations it will do so. The Japanese people could quite easily create a law strengthening their existing Anti-YAKUZA laws, something similar to the American Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), and the US could eliminate the South American organized crime organizations with a stroke of the pen, by making illegal drugs "Legal", taxing and controlling their distribution and production. Until that time these organizations fulfill a social-need and will remain in existence until that need no longer exists.

Thank you for this. As a victim of the US public school system, I barely know accurate US history, let alone that of other nations. You cover a broad timeline of complex historical information in a manner that is entertaining and doesn't seem burdensome. As my introduction to most Japanese culture was through J-horror and Yakuza movies (lots of Takeshi Kitano and Takashi Miike), I really enjoy your channel. Good work.

Hehehehe... My apologies for laughing, and I know the meaning is completely different in Japanese. Big Brother it says. But in my language, Afrikaans, it is a name that was use in older generations that is a very stereotypical name for a little girl with ginger hair and pigtails. Sort of like our literary equivalent of Annie or Madeline. Only spelled Annetjie, but pronounced the same. I just find it fascinating how some words overlap in languages by pronunciation, but not in meaning. Like to us, Italian words commonly used sound like swearing to us. I digress. The video was phenomenal and it was great to learn more about the Yakuza. I am subscribing.

Just want to point out that at 4:15, the two wood block prints of men in women's clothing does not depict yakuza wearing women's clothing. Left print is of a onnagata kakuki actor, and right is of Yamato Takeru, the Japanese folk hero disguised as a maid servant in preparation for an assassination

Aniki. I don't want to be 'that guy' but I thought you may want to know, at minute 20:25 regarding "the stabbing of the liberal politician" you say 1981 instead of 1881. Also - I am really digging your channel and always look forward to watching your videos. Is really strong work.
