Magnus Carlsen has just quit playing FIDE games in front of our eyes during the 2024 World Rapid Chess Championship.
Tensions have been brewing between Magnus Carlsen and FIDE for quite some time now, with Magnus and Hikaru Nakumura almost skipping the tournament before it even began.
This is how he got KICKED OUT of the World Championship.

@noahViral135 I am not a particular fide fan. I just hate grandiosity and narcissism. And Magnus seems arrogant and grandios in this case. Additionally, it seems like he could earn great money from freestyle chess, so he probably have great individual benefits from this conflict by making a fool of fide. Imagine if Ronaldo or Messi would "boycott" Fifa world cup, because they wanted to use singlet instead of t-shirt.. Would be ridiculous, so they don't - even if they are as great in football as Carlsen is in chess... Coming from a norwegian, and previous Carlsen fan...

Magnus is the talent. You don't hamstring your event by upsetting the talent with petty issues during heated competition. Imagine if some clown official told Michael Jordan during the Bulls/Jazz game 6 in 1998 that he needed to stop competing and go change his socks or they would boot him from the game. In one idiotic move they have made this years Rapid and Blitz irrelevant and invalid. Chess doesn't exist to support FIDE. Can FIDE survive this colossal blunder?

i think its reasonable to wear sports attire. every athlete wears appropriate dress. this was not absurd, but feels magnus was unfair in comments and also not cool. i am sure there is 2 sides to this story, but feel magnus was on the wrong side. also i love magnus, one of the greatest chess players for sure

This was not a new rule, FIDE has it reasons behind them, and is open about it. If you don't like them, change them. But he's acting like a spoiled child not getting this way. OR, he knows he no longer has the chops, he was already performing poorly and is gettin thrown out before he loses.

Why Magnus was spreading lies abt Fide not granting players permission to play in Freestyle. That Freestyle letter clearly has Magnus name in it which stated clearly both can coexist.
