Marcus and faleris have by far the worst relationship between a tower boss and their pal. Most of the other ones have legitimate friendship and comraderie but not him. He seems to see their relationship as purely transactional, and is highly worried that faleris will decide that he isn't useful anymore. The white sand is drugs and marcus gives faleris the drugs instead of food at times. Marcus has no real love for faleris and he believes the feeling is mutual, but I am pretty sure despite marcus' fears that faleris might turn on him one day it is unlikely because it is stated that palspheres make whatever they catch obedient, and as faleris is released from a palsphere during the boss fight it seems unlikely that it isn't at play. Even if faleris does dislike marcus I doubt faleris is capable of resisting whatever the pal spheres do to caught pals. Fun fact: whatever technology palsphere have that make pals obedient also works on humans. This obedience effect is also why some characters such as lily choose not to use palspheres. in spite of this there are characters with good relationships with their pals that still use spheres. Hell, zoey's grizzbolt is basically a surrogate father to her and she still keeps it in a sphere.
