The story of "Dragon Ball" tells the beginning of Goku's story before the events of "Dragon Ball Z". Dragon Ball emphasizes Goku's childhood, and the series unfolds through various narrative arcs.
The Emperor Pilaf Arc delves into the beginning of Goku's journey post the death of his mysterious grandpa, as he runs into a girl named Bulma, who's in search of the seven Dragon Balls. Realizing Goku's supernatural strength, Bulma convinces him to join her in her search. Along the way, the two encounter foes who later become friends, all in search of the same thing, the Dragon Balls.
In the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku has begun his training with Master Roshi of the Turtle Hermit School. He along with Krillin, test their resolve against Roshi's rigorous methods. As their training concludes, they travel to the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai to compete with the greatest fighters in the world. But little do they know that their Master has disguised himself as a competitor to defeat his own students.
The Red Ribbon Army Arc unfolds with the appearance of the army themselves in Goku's travels, as they're on the hunt for the Dragon Balls. Having no choice now but to fight back in order to recover his Grandfathers Four-Star Ball, Goku must take on the entire Red Ribbon Army. Unfortunately for Commander Red, the army's leader, he underestimates Goku, who is no ordinary boy.
The Fortune Teller Baba Arc introduces Fortune Teller Baba, also known as Master Roshi's older sister. Goku and his friends meet her in an effort to reveal the location of the final Dragon Ball, but it's discovered that they'll have to battle her five champions as a form of entertainment first. Goku, Yamcha, and Krillin test their might against the likes of Baba's forces, but unbeknownst to them, the final challenger is a familiar face, and the toughest of them all.
The 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, introduces the malevolence of the "Crane School's" teacher known as Master Shen, (also known as Master Roshi's former rival) as well as his two students, Tien and Chiaotzu. After some difficult training, Master Roshi's students head to the tournament, but soon learn that the Crane School is unlike many foes they've faced in the past. As the matches heat up, the Turtle Hermit school must fight for not only their masters honor, but their own lives.
The Demon King Piccolo Arc kicks off with the death of Goku's friend Krillin, found lifeless on the tournaments grounds. It's soon revealed that Piccolo, the Demon King, has once again returned. Although this enemy is new to Goku, he's all to familiar to Master Roshi. Piccolo ravages the Earth in search of the Dragon Balls, and with the help of Emperor Pilaf and his crew, Piccolo regains his youth. With his true power restored, Piccolo begins his reign over the Earth with only one standing in his way...Goku.
The 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament picks up after the events of Demon King Piccolo, who produced an offspring just before his death. Goku, now aware of this, decides to train with Kami, (otherwise known as God), and Mr. Popo, in order to gain strength unlike anything anyone's ever seen. Awaiting a teenage Goku at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, Piccolo Jr. intends to pick up where his father left off...the annihilation of Goku and his friends.
