The smart controller's sensitivity adjustments are similar to what you would do with a computer mouse. Every mouse has a sensitivity adjustment layout so you can choose how fast that cursor will move across the screen. That's my best analogy to describe that adjustment setup.

Great info, thanks. Nice to hear him underscore how important it is to enable "person tracking". A question I still have that nobody seems to state clearly is... what kind of FOCUS POINT must I select to maximize the camera's ability to lock & track a moving subject? In this video he talked about setting a single point, but if we do set a single point, assuming AF servo setting is active, can the camera still lock & follow a subject wherever it goes even if it moves BEYOND that single focus point? Somehow I'm thinking the only way "person tracking" actually works is if we instead select a ZONE of AF points, or even ALL points. Doesn't setting a single AF point hobble the camera's ability to use ALL focus points to track a moving subject?

OC PhotoPro great question. Did you get an answer?

@@jeffkingsfield1461 I've pursued this info in other forums and my conclusion is that we should enable subject tracking and use the ALL points zone, but enable the option to manually specify the initial AF location. Furthermore... when you toggle the camera into LIVE VIEW mode, additional menu options appear that must be setup. This is where the eye tracking lives plus a few other cool settings. These are only relevant when the camera is in LIVE VIEW mode, however. So my plan is to use live view with the ALL points zone AF, set the initial focus point on my desired subject, and then let the camera track from there. Since it's in live view... AF can be tracked across almost the entire field of view.

OC PhotoPro your question is the same as mine. With the 1DxII I use single point focus for tracking birds in flight. HOWEVER, I must keep that point on the bird through my burst to keep every shot in focus. I rented a Sony a9ii this week and in wide area focus, the camera picked up the bird and kept it in focus regardless of where the bird was in the frame (this helps greatly with composition, and keeps my from having to crop in post to get the composition I want). I STILL have not figured out if the 1DxIII can do this like the Sony! I DON’T want to use Live view for birds in flight, and can’t figure out if I can do this with the OVF.

Rob Heifner I’m pretty certain you can, very effectively. Hop over to fredmiranda.com and see the Canon forum. There’s a user “RobAmy” there who has posted many excellent bird shots in a “1DX3 sample images” thread, and he describes some of the details of his process. If you don’t want to use live view, you’ll be a bit more limited in overall AF tracking area, since I believe it can only track within the visible points displayed in the OVF grid... but that’s still pretty good if you generally pan to keep the bird centered. Rob selects “all AF points” for AF, but also uses the “initial AF point” feature (most often center point I think) to show the camera what to track, and as long as you hold the AF back button, he says it tracks very well.

OC PhotoPro great info! Thanks for the quick reply. I’ll check out Fredmiranda forum. I wasn’t looking forward to selling a Canon 600/4 III for a Sony 600/4, as I KNOW the IQ of the Canon and not sure of the Sony lens. If the 1DxIII can increase my number of keepers with focus tracking over the 1DxII, then I’d be a happy man (and save a lot of $$ by not switching systems)!

Pretty much sums up what I've been saying for wks now, you're only upgrading to the 1Dx Mk iii for the new AF system and maybe higher fps. It's an amazing camera, I just see agencies buying it more so than actual photographers for the robo 20fps 1000+ shot feature via jpeg.

Wait... did he say you CANNOT use back button focus AND the new smart selector?!? 5MHz is not faster than 2.4MHz... it's just a "different channel" that hopefully less people are using so might result in stronger /consistent signal performance
@mika2666
@mika2666 4 жыл бұрын
No, 5ghz (802.11ac specifically) is actually faster because the channels can wider be because there is more spectrum to be used. Also the new WFT-E9 adapter supports 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO is twice as fast as the WFT-E8 because it has two antennas that it can use at the same time to communicate with supported access points.

Mika - believe it or not our answers don't conflict... it "can be faster as long as the equipment is better and the bandwidth is available. But in and of itself is not faster if the service provider has the same amount of traffic utilizing both 5 and 2.4 :) It's the same situation when a service provider deploys a new tap in a new neighborhood. The few who tap into will discover their speeds are awesome...until that tap gets over utilized and speed goes down...then a new tap is needed. So, 5MHz is the new tap..the new channel if you will. Downstream equipment can definitely improve access performance for sure, just as you've said. But even 5MHz will be challenged when the bandwidth is equally over utilized. That said, I do agree it can be faster...just in and of itself it's just a different channel accessing the providers spectrum.

I wonder if the head tracking will work on animals also. Obviously not the face tracking, but for wildlife is this camera still a better choice? I’m debating between the mark II and III now. Moving up from the old 1D mark IV. Anyone want to share feedback so far? Thanks

Gary Michael Flanagan animal tracking works perfectly in the 1Dx2... but it's better described as "object tracking"... animal or otherwise. It works in live view, OVF view, and movie mode...

mikewinburn honestly, I’ve heard some say the new camera has some issues and has missed some shots in certain action scenarios. I realize the reviewers probably haven’t adjusted all the cases to optimize the settings, but I’m a bit on the fence as to whether I should just pick up the 1Dx 2 for far less. What do you think? Thanks

Gary Michael Flanagan - the 1DX2 will be hard to beat...but , depends on your photography needs. I'm interested in the 3 based on improvements in low light performance and image quality. The increased af points opens opportunity for composition for me. The full touch is attractive. I don't need more fps However, it might be wise to get a 1Dx2 as a stop gap for the eventual EOS-1R as I've heard virtually NO reviewer who owns a 1DX2 Yet say the 1Dx3 is a must have. Most all vids I've seen are largely marketing hype, fan excitement, and short on comparative objectivity. That said, I'll be upgraded no to the 3... but precisely because I plan to NOT upgrade to mirrorless until at least the 3rd generation of the 1R... so this may be the last hurrah of the mature DSLR.

@@mikewinburn Yeah the 1DX2's low light performance is pretty shit, the A7III can out shoot it in low-light and it costs less than half the price.

Hi there, I'm facing an issue with my 1dx mark 3 that is when I connect it with atomos ninja v recorder it only record dci 4k 24p/30p. When I set it for dci 4k 60p with C log, it doesn't work and even does not show any output by HDMI out of 1dx mark 3 . Why? I don't know. In spite of using orignal Atomos atomflex pro HDMI cable which support 4k 60p , HDR and HDMI 2.0a ready. Please help me to figure it out and tell me the way how to get dci 4k 60p through HDMI out of 1dx mark 3 for Atomos ninja v recorder. I will be great full to you. Thank you.
