@ItsMichaelReid exactly. Studying psychology and his actions do align with his life. Abused/ignored by his family. Primary Caretaker (Vicky) abuses him. Struggles in school. Bullied at school. That will mentally damage a kid. Even his friends arent the best. They treat him the best. But that bar is already low so ya... Its actually amazing he isnt a WORSE kid.

This is an episode to show kids that popularity can be fleeting, and your real friends are the ones who will stick by you at your lowest, and the popular kids are so shallow they will toss you out the moment you are not exactly like them. Timmy is usually selfish, but his wishes will always come round on him in a way that will force him to be a better person.

Actually Timmy could’ve wished he had a physically, emotionally and mentally healthy overall household and school environment and relationship with his parents, Vicky and his schoolmates. Where all over the environment he’s in is full of a healthy relationship dynamic. Bonus: he could’ve wished the world is only full of physically, emotionally and mentally healthy environment and relationship.

There’s another episode in one of the later seasons which shows “a wish too far”, but from Chester and AJ’s perspective. In the episode, Chester and AJ are school reporters who are investigating how Timmy suddenly became popular. They were originally doing it out of spite because they were upset with how badly Timmy treated them when he got popular. But when Timmy apologized to Chester and AJ at the end of both episodes, they changed their minds about posting the report about Timmy. They admitted that they were both in the wrong (Timmy for being rude to his friends, and Chester and AJ for almost ruining his life with a school news story).

There are two reasons to why Timmy tends to be selfish; 1) He's a just a kid, and kids often tend to be selfish, and 2) He has to deal with jerks on a regular basis whether it's his parents ignoring him, Vicky being an abusive babysitter, Denzel Crocker always giving him Fs (aside from the D in his debut episode which still isn't much better), Francis bullying him in school, or being judged poorly by the popular kids just because they don't find him cool. I'm not saying these are good excuses for him to act selfish, but the impact people have on others can easily affect how they behave both positively and negatively, especially for a kid. I know some later episodes tend to exaggerate Timmy's selfishness compared to the earlier seasons making him more unlikable, but here, I see it that he was so frustrated by how the popular kids were belittling him that it put him in a mental state where he became fixated on wanting to prove his worth (especially for his crush) to the point where he forgot about everything else including what really mattered.

I knew a kid similar to Timmy growing up. Except instead of fairly odd parents he has doctor parents and literally could buy or get anything he ever wanted. That kid never heard no cuz his parents just weren't there to parent. He had a live in babysitter who he had learned to hate but really he bullied her. Definitely not a Vickie but when a kid isn't really told no and has access to so many things at the snap of the fingers, yeah they become very selfish. Timmy at least semi learns give or take the situation and season....

You know, Shawn has a point. The way Timmy acted in this episode, actually in most episodes in general especially post-Secret Wish, does have him act like Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Timmy only cares for Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof/Peri and even caused a floating timeline just so he’d never give them up, he abandoned Chester and A.J., and wished for ridiculous things without thinking of the consequences or caring about others

Trixie Tang, along with Veronica, Tad and Chad should also get more of a severe punishment, as they should learn that being rich does not excuse them for being jerks that dismisses anyone they consider "lesser" than them, and they should also learn to appreciate people for who they are and not for their materialistic possessions. Timmy was definitely in the wrong for what he did, but it could also be said his parents practically neglecting him with Vicky, and Vicky being abusive, his perspective of the whole situation could've been very warped. He may have thought what he was doing to become popular was ok since Cosmo and Wanda couldn't deny a wish that wasn't strictly against Da Rules and his parents weren't there to help teach him the life lessons he needed. He definitely needed to lose his fairies for a time to help teach them there are consequences to his actions, which while unfortunate, was something to help teach him necessary boundaries.

Timmy had his selfish and rude character traits. I grew up with fairly odd parents and eventually my mom and sister had to say that show wasn't allowed anymore. It was because I started copying timmy's actions. In fact , that's one of the reasons why if I have children in the future , i'm not letting them watch the show. "The episode that made us all hate Timmy Turner" Really? you hate him. This episode made me love him. Frankly I rather have a main character who has more of a jerk side to him than one that is super boring and vanilla like Chole or Hazel. (although I do think between the two hazel is better written.) There are kids like Timmy who are jerks and I think it a good thing to have characters like that. I also feel like Timmy's character gets mispresented a lot in modern video essays about the original FOP. Does Timmy act selfish at times? yes but I feel like episodes like the one where babysits a 5 year old Vickey also show that he does have a nice/guilty side to him. He initially does try to get revenge on her by mistreating her the same way she mistreats him but then he ends up regretting it and throws her a nice party at the end. That episode proves that despite being much younger than Vickey he is a better person than her. This also applies in the episode where he kidnaps Chip Skylark and just like in the Vicky episode he does regret mistreating Chip. There also a lot of times he does do outright kind things for Tootie (who he acknowledges has a far worse life than him because she has to live with Vicky ) He lets her borrow cosmo and wanda for a day. He also gave Cosmo and Wanda a child when he saw that they were longing for one. He also does at least try to improve Vickey as a person by wishing she was nice. He has also helped Chip, Mark Chang, and the crimson chin plenty of times throughout the series. He was willing to sacrifice having his faeries to save his parents in abracontapsty. I think Timmy's parents should be the characters we dislike not Timmy because they neglect & abuse him.

The later seasons, character archetypes falling out of favor in recent times, and people propping up new wish really did a lot of damage to his reputation. A ton of people miss the point of his character and end up treating it as a relic of the 2000s. It had a point to it in the good seaaons and only starting becoming bad when they pushed too far. I like new wish just fine, but it ends up being less memorable to me since it had a lot less bite to it compared to the original run of FOP.

Anyone else wish that Tootie got fairies instead of Timmy? I feel that this may’ve been a much better story of a girl getting abused by an older sister while trying to get closer to her crush (not unlike Timmy did with Trixie)
@XJIcequeen
@XJIcequeen 4 күн бұрын
Yeah. Plus, she’s willing to share her fairies and help others (likely what she wanted to do in her birthday episode) Remember in A New Wish how Hazel used her rule free wish to allow Winn, Antony, and Jasmine to be allowed to remember that Hazel has fairies? I feel like that’s where Tootie was going despite it being against the rules. Remember, Tootie didn’t know. I’m sure if Cosmo and Wanda had the chance to tell her, she’d understood and probably would’ve used a rule free wish to allow a select few people (most likely Timmy and her parents) know that she has fairies.

I think Shawn here (Or someone, I don't remember which channel it was) actually theorized the true reason why Timmy got Fairy Godparents. While some of his wishes are normally made out of selfishness, Timmy is quick to see the errors of his ways and will try to set things right. Underneath it all, he's still a Nice Guy at heart. Every once in a while, Timmy makes a more selfless wish, such as the time he let Tootie borrow Cosmo and Wanda so she could enjoy her birthday for a change. In fact, it's clear in the "Wishology" trilogy that he's The Chosen One not because he's strong, but because he's kind. He’s only a jerk to learn a lesson/get karma or because of lousy writing. This clearly being the former since it's the THIRD f*cking episode.

1 thing I always wondered as a kid is would popular/rich kids truly be friends if they weren't? In this show's case they appeared to like Timmy once they thought he had money, but once he told the truth they abandoned him. Well, if say Trixie's family went broke, I doubt Tad, Chad, & Veronica would remain friends with her. Even in Danny Phantom years after this episode aired, when Valery's dad lost his job & they went broke, her "friends" abandoned her & she started hanging out with Danny, Tucker, & Sam more.

To be far to Timmy, he's only 9 or 10 years old. At that age kids are pretty impressional, they see them and there peers in classes. Believe me I was in the same situation where I saw myself as lower class and most of my classmates in a higher class let's say. Also as I grow into my mid teens I started to not watch as much F.O.P mainly because there was no growth to the characters. For example, Cosmo starts off as an average fairy and then he gradually devolves into a blundering idiot. Some goes for Trixie, it's like she was made out to be a popular kid who slowly falls in love with Timmy, but further down the line she turns out not necessarily bad but rather "toxic" for lack of a better word. As for Timmy, he'll learn a life lesson in one episode, repeat the same mistake and learn the lesson over again. My point is, at some point the writing was good and then it slowly went down hill.
@kagemaru397
@kagemaru397 Күн бұрын
It had a good team, then Butch was given full creative control and he's not that good writing on his own. That's why things started getting bad. I agree. At first, Cosmo and Wanda were meant to be the same level of screwiness but not over the top. Then in the 2000s at the beginning, Wanda got significantly smarter and Cosmo significantly stupider but Wanda wasn't the know it all stick in the mud she became later, and Cosmo had his smart thoughtful moments like when he laid down the law with Mama Cosma and saved Wanda from the Pixies in School's Out The Musical. Trixie. It's clear they wanted to slowburn make her something more than a snobby popular girl. But that got sidetracked and it's sad. Even if she and Timmy didn't get together, it would have been good to see where it went instead in a better way. We don't even see Trixie anymore after a while and seeing this close to 15 years ago made me sad. It felt like such a far away time, but I digress. And yeah, Timmy has significant aesop amnesia. It sucks that nothing mattered with his development too after a while.

I feel like this episode made Timmy feel more relatable. I mean their was a bunch of shows pushing the idea of trying to get in with the popular kids, like they are some special beings. So it felt reasonable for Timmy to make such a wish, although he quickly becomes shallow and rude to his friends and God Parents. Showing that being popular isn't all it's cracked up to be if you have to push the people that care for you away. I love that it takes a court case to show Timmy he was taking advantage of his faries. As it's done in a dramatic way for his 10 year old mind to understand. Cause clearly the chart couldn't explain that to him. That being unpopular isn't bad.

Timmy coulda least niced to Cosmo and Wanda. "Bus coming any second, cool me up quick please!" And in response to the "Aren't there two words you wanna say, sport?" "...hm... oh yeah, 'pinky ring'! Thanks, I almost forgot that part!" Also: Coulda wished Chester and A. J. and even Elmer were coolofied too. Imagine that version of the whole episode. Maybe Timmy even goes full turntables and the four outpopular the populars!

Honestly, except for the first season, this show really doesn't hold up very well when compared to other Nicktoons of the era and before. It talks down to the audience with its 1 dimensional writing. Imagine if they'd brought on writers from Rocko's Modern Life or Kablam or even Doug for that matter. Plus, Butch Hartman is a big fat hack of a cartoonist. Funny that he went to school with Seth MacFarlane, and it turns out the dirty jokes guy is a lot more wholesome than the guy creating kids shows.

I don't know... I thought Timmy was an awful person, and probably a psychopath, up until I had enough education in childhood development/mental illness…. Since then, I have come to believe that all children are inherently, terrible, but they have to be in order to survive. Timmy lacked the abilityto empathize with other children who maybe did not have fairy godparents. And that's OK. Children do not develop empathy until a significantly older phase. Are emotional maturity doesn't even complete until our mid 20s. So why should I expect a neglected fourth grader to be better than adults I know?

I liked the episode in season 3 called "The Big Scoop!" which follows Chester and AJ's perspective throughout this episode. They come to the conclusion that the only way Timmy got so much cool stuff so fast was by kidnapping his parents and stealing their money. I feel it makes Chester's "he's gone to the dark side" line hold so much more weight than in the original context.

The problem is that Chester is, unfortunately, even less intelligent than Timmy, as well as too naive and trusting for his own good, which means that he would likely lose his fairie(s) almost immediately upon getting them as evidenced by Norm manipulating him to achieve the genie’s own ends Chester may have better morals than Timmy but the latter is also quicker to read the room and recognize a threat such as Crocker or the aforementioned Norm than Chester Additionally while and his father are dirt poor, this made the latter a better father to Chester than Timmy’s parents because he genuinely loves his son and cares about Chester’s wellbeing

I think this show was rather smart. This is learned behavior. Selfishness is all Timmy ever knew before Cosmo and Wanda. His parents are deeply selfish as is his main caretaker, and rejection is familiar to him. The rejection from the popular kids is what he recognizes as affection. He constantly has to strive for attention from his parents. I 100% understand this video but he is a kid after all and Cosmo and Wanda are really his parents and are there to teach him and reparent him. As sad as it is him being clueless to the popular kids rejection is unsurprising. Love your vids :)

First off, enjoyed your review, Shawn. I'm a big fan of the early seasons of The Fairly Oddparents, especially season 1, (yeah it has those moments that are a product of its time, but I still enjoy the hell out of it.) It's like the best of both worlds with the shorts, and the rest of series, in terms of animation. Second, this episode, yeah, the way they go about Timmy learning his lesson is pretty... forced? idk... but I still enjoy it for what it is, though. It doesn't really change my views on him. But there are moments that I just enjoy this episode for. The animation is a highlight, for one. Erik Weise storyboarded part of the episode. Plus, there are some neat little moments I like. Cosmo and Wanda coming out of the bushes, and when Cosmo talks about those nuts he found, Wanda just looks away... (wonder what that's about, hmm), the popular kids glaring at Timmy, and he just keeps looking back at them hahaha, the animation again... (seriously, to anyone else reading this, if you're learning how to draw these characters, try using this episode as reference :)), and Timmy being nice to Elmer at the end. Make of it what you will. Yeah, this episode wasn't perfect, but the little moments of these characters before... god knows what happened in the writers' room... and the animation, and the little blink and you miss it stuff, I just try to take it for what it is. I love Timmy, he's kinda my favorite character, even if he isn't perfect! Have a nice morning, afternoon, etc.! P.S., beware of the polar bears and viacom. Just in case...

Something that always stroke me as a kid from this episode is the fact that his house is already huge, at least for my experience, I live in a zone with comparatively small or medium houses, so the idea of an even bigger house hits me. Especially when I think I would have to clean it. Americans have gone too far with housing sizes.

I wouldn't call A Wish too Far the episode that makes me hate Timmy Turner. But, I will say that this is the episode that makes me hate Jorgan Von Strangle. We've seen Timmy learn his lesson and it was genuine, said he was sorry. But, Jorgan refuses to accept Timmy's remose and forces the judge to take away his fairies from him. And when Timmy does get Cosmo and Wanda back, he gets punished again by Jorgan by getting a boil. This episode is meanspirited, not funny, and it makes me hate Jorgan Von Strangle and it makes me see him as a villain in this episode making A Wish Too Far the only episode from Season 1 I don't like.

Ok. I saw this show og when i was 14 and maybe a bit too old for it but i loved this show as funny and carefree and still do. Though timmy is painted a bit harsher here than in some other episodes it was still relatable to me BECAUSE EVERY BOY I KNEW INCLUDING MY BROTHERS ACTED JUST LIKE TIMMY when i was growing up. And i myself was in love with a guy and got carried away with how much i love him. Feel how you feel but looking back this show and this episode is great. Fun and memorable moments and a nice moral lesson. How a show like this should be. Plus this is an important lesson on why you shouldnt give up the people u care for for popularity.

In my personal take, i kinda always thought Timmy was definitely selfish and he could be a lil shit sometimes. But… he’s a kid. And more often than not, he learned his lesson and made things right in the end. Not to mention the absolute travesty his life is without fairies(absent/neglectful parents, Vicky, difficult school life, Francis…) would definitely lead to a power trip if you had a way to make it all stop, even if just for a while. Still can’t really defend anything after, like… when they introduced Sparky though.

I fed them and got dragged out to parties sometimes but I never understood the attention craving and all the flashiness. I think Timmy is a pretty selfish character myself and he's no Arnold but I think he eventually has his heart in the right place. He's just been kind of neglected by his parents and he's abused by his babysitter. Not to condone it , but, I think he learns most of his lessons and a lot of kids really do start off as selfish. I can see him having the potential to grow up and be a genuinely good adult. I think he just had a rocky start and Cosmo and Wanda acted more like his parents to the best they could. I think we also forget how easy it is for kids to want to be so popular and get attention in that way because they don't really comprehend that can quickly go away and wantng attention as a kid in his circumstance is completely normal. Also, being about the same age, as much love as I had for this show, I don't think it holds up very well either !
