I am a French born British national, brought up in a catholic family, and altar boy until age 15 . That was long before converting to the Sikh faith , a religion more God loving than God fearing. Free from sectarian prejudice. Even as a child I couldn’t reconcile with the idea that any particular community had the monopoly of truth. God can be found, without being sequestered away from worldly life , like these nuns. There is only one humanity, regardless of caste, creed, colour, gender or community. Sat Sri Akal, Salam, Shalom, Shanti.

I am a catholic....but I advocate that in every country convents should be visited by human rights commission.... because many people are suffering in side the walls.....if nothing to worry....then it is golden opportunity for sisters to convince them about jesus glory 🎉

An excellent film of an intriguing historical event that took place in East Bergholt and Manningtree Station 100 years ago.

PERFECTION? Sister Margaret did reach perfection in her first three months at the convent, as a perfectly foolish nun.

her superiors were more notably lacking in perfection which could be gained by charity

It only came to me just recently - on entering an enclosed Order, all the nuns would effectively be working for nothing. Or was it cheap labour?

the shoes are too loud for the convent. also unusual for postulants to be given individual cells. most slept in a dormitory with curtains surrounding individual sleeping areas

Unusual that the Abbess ate separately. usually the officers of the house sat at a separate table on a dais above the rest of the tables in the refectory

shouldn't that clothing ceremony be in Latin, or parts of it? not just the singing?

they are treating Dame Maurus like a lay sister as they did the dirty work .. and lay sisters brought no or much less dowry than the choir nuns ... they were not expected read and study and learn the Latin for the Divine Office

the self flagellation was a voluntary discipline or part of a penitential regime set up by the superior, not as a punishment

Also 400 strokes? seems exaggerated ... nuns usually did much less and on Fridays, more a ritual act that beating oneself up excessively as a punishment from a superior
