Essex were four US Marines: two women and two men and they would perform in uniform. They were allowed to showcase their songs around the country while representing the Corps. Probably why their time together was so short.

Hi Rel! glad you are back! You might want to consider slipping in "Surfin' U.S.A." at the end of the 1963 songs. I noticed it was the #1 Billboard song for the year 1963 even though it never hit #1 for any particular week.

They also had another top ten hit with A WALKIN MIRACLE

These accessory-girl songs, where the girl's happiness depends on getting the guy she wants and then being loyal and submissive to him definitely transitions to other points of view once the hippie movement hit, and the summer of love changed relationship to recreation. They were even some songs that encourage the guy to be rough with her, sung from her point of view. I'm thinking of songs like "Johnny Get Angry," And the lesser known Carole King-Jerry Goffin Phil Spector produced song," The Crystals' "He Hit Me It Felt Like a Kiss." You will not be surprised to hear that they had a hard time finding airplay for that song.

The only thing I know about The Essex is that they were active marines while they recorded/released this song. No clue why they didn’t stick around longer. Maybe Beatle mania had something to do with that. But yep, it’s a generic song, but still a nice little tune. Kind of similar to the last one in that regard, except this one is obviously in English. Looking forward to your next video, as it’s one of my favorites from 1963.

I think they qualify as one hit wonders so many times "creative differences" or just moving apart from each other cause groups to disband...

A good little tune. I assumed they would have been English with a name like that.

Rel, welcome back mate. Great to see you and your reaction videos again. There is another gem by this group that I think would be worth a listen. It's called I'd do anything and it's my favorite song of theirs. It's a beautiful ballad and it definitely should of been a top hit. Her voice is very much accentuated in this song. Here's the KZbin link to the song --> kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIi7lZ6mfJyfj9E

Loved this first time I heard in mid 60s. Still do! Unfortunately her probably only hit. This happens for some reason. Maybe the Beatles overshadowed it. Anyway, I'll love it forever
