I can't help but notice that it's a common theme where if an author or filmmaker finds religion, they tend to go completely over the edge. Even if their non-Christian stuff was fairly tame. Before: "Here's a story about how puppies and kittens learned to get along!" After: "REPENT! YOU WILL BURN IN HELL IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT JESUS!!! GAYS ARE THE SPAWN OF SATAN! ABORTION IS A TOOL OF THE DEVIL!!! THE COMMIES WILL INVADE AND KILL US ALL!!!!!!"

@endorenna7106 7 күн бұрын
@DocZFlux It really is. From the name and poster I thought Please Don’t Touch Me would be some gross piece about a woman being assaulted by her husband… then it turns out to be about trying to help fix some trauma on a film with some unnecessary shots of a lady in her underclothes! A surprise, but a welcome one.

I honestly find Ron Ormond/Estus Pirkle collaborations to be fascinating when you keep in mind that the films are clearly being made by a small town community theatre and by the local church, they even say so in the credits, so the making of these films had to have been major events for the town, like, off camera they would be barbecuing, could you imagine living in a place like that? Where every once in a while the local minister and this exploitation filmmaker are like "We're gonna shoot a movie", and the movie is somewhere between a sermon and a fever dream, with gore and viseral depictions of hell. Like, I want so much to see a film about the making of these films, or something inspired by them, like Waiting for Guffman meets Hell House.

Not to be pedantic but that's not what he said. He was guilt tripping US-Americans who think God blesses "Muricah" by saying if they don't repent, God will take his blessings from them to a country like Indonesia or Brazil (which of course means he thought those countries weren't as blessed as the US THEN and it's still a stupid way of approaching things, but that is what he DID say). Given that Brad is editing it just to show how motormouth Etus speaks, the point is just not as clear as if you see the full thing. Estus might have thought most Indonesians are going to hell, but that's just because most are Muslim and the whole "You got to accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour to be saved" thing, so it's not really the country being damned..

My main problem with the idea of Hell (and Heaven) is that anything repeated over such a long time frame would just become routine. Torture works because it is novel, pleasure feels good because we don’t always experience it. The very notion of perpetual torment or bliss is just ridiculous, unless there is a department in both places coming up wirh new tortures/pleasures. Tl;dr heaven and hell are dumb.

That one dude who plays the atheist dad in The Burning Hell and the main communist enforcer is the funniest part of these films to me because of how over the top his facial expressions are. Plus they CONSTANTLY cut to him to show his reaction to the situation or what someone is saying he doesn't like or doesn't understand. My crack theory is that it's canonically just the same atheist character from The Burning Hell that went on to work for the communist takeover to pillage homes for another beer. These 3 films are among the greatest American folk art of the 20th Century: An original melting pot of Fundamentalist Baptist theology, exploitation filmmaking, religious sincerity, grindhouse aesthetics, and end-times revivalist brimstone. They are an authentic artifact of a segment of American culture in the early’70s that the mainstream culture could not understand. Somewhere beyond Hee Haw, Walking Tall, Elvis on Tour, Texas Chainsaw, the election of Jimmy Carter, and a Slow Train Coming is the Pirkle/Ormond trilogy.

Okay, maybe someone from the Bible belt or someone who grew up with someone from an older generation can answer this question: why are people expected to read the Bible CONSTANTLY? Like, yeah, I've read through the Bible, but why am I supposed to keep reading it again and again and again? What 'new wisdom' am I supposed to glean from it when I also go to church every week as well and, apparently, am supposed to be involved in church-related activities all week long? I know this is something of an extreme version these days but I also know people who say that stuff like this isn't even as crazy as it got. I'm just...what's the thinking? Why read it over and over and over? It's not exactly a page-turner.

Speaking of tripping, that make-up at 48:00 looks right out of Roger Corman's THE TRIP.

You can take the director out of exploitation but you can't take the exploitation out of the director. Also, so I had to read up on Jack Hyles & things got dark.

A couple years ago, I ordered a custom flask off a website. It was bright orange and it had "If Footmen Tire You, What Will Horses Do?" emblazoned on it; in other words, a literal Estus Flask. Some fucker stole it off my doorstep.

This shit reminds me so much of the batshit insane bullshit I had drilled into my head as a kid in church. Really cathartic to see this dumb shit being picked apart and mocked.

1:09:07 I know I was laughing too hard at the absurdity of this scene and not these people. I'm not a believer but, I'f there is a hell I'm sure going.

Let's take a look at some of the subversive cartoons available in '71. The Funky Phantom (Gasp! The occult!) Archie's TV Funnies (Teenage love triangle! The horror!) The Jackson 5ive (Eek! Ethnic People!) The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm show (Teenagers obviously having sex and promoting evolution!) Scooby-Doo (The occult AND a blasphemous talking dog!) The Harlem Globetrotters (Oh no! More ethnic people!) Lidsville (Not technically a cartoon, but obviously made on drugs!) Sabrina the Teenage Witch (BURN HER!) Josie and the Pussycats (That evil rock and roll!) Johnny Quest (Haji is obviously a Satan worshipper!) Lancelot Link (Not technically a cartoon but has pro evolution undercurrents.)
