Ok I know this was kinda done as a joke. But as a character design artist / animation student it’s actually really interesting to see how people assign race to characters who don’t really have them. I feel like often times it has to do with the voice actors. Obviously whatever race the voice actors are is usually what people are going to associate with the implied race of the character. But other things can go into it too. Idk. It’s just fascinating to me .

Pac-Man represents the basic universal human necessity of eating food and staying away from predators who would eat you. This transcends ethnic and racial differences. I think Marc Brown did a great job making Arthur, because it seems like everyone thinks that he is there race. Growing up I just thought he was white like me, and because the brain celebrated Kwanza, I knew he was Black. But I can see why some would think Arthur too. I also suspected Francine was. But at the end of the day I guess the fact they're all different animals is part of the metaphor. It's cool to see how different people can have different interpretations about them and bond over it!

I assumed he was black when I was a kid because he was a lot darker skinned in the original Arthur books that I used to read. I don’t even think anyones obsessed because even if the guy in the vid is joking it’s ok if other people take it seriously, because as a Artist let me tell you racial coding is done all the time in animation. It’s absolutely a thing that artist do, and even the most average viewer of animation knows it exist and recognise it even if they don’t realise that what their seeing is racial coding. It’s why people know the Simpsons who are literally yellow are white. Big city green does this as well where characters will have various skin tones but because they are coded a certain way you can still tell their race, same with Doug. Goku and Vegeta, aliens but are still very much coded as Asian. It doesn’t matter if its aliens are animals, the list goes on and on. To be fair not all characters are coded as a particular race but a lot of them are for whatever reason. If you wanna see some seriously blatant coding watch fish tales. It is insane how they managed to make literal fishes different races but they did it, and it is funny. It’s ok to laugh about it and it’s ok if people take it seriously because they aren’t exactly wrong either.
