Yeah different countries with different levels of socio-economic development; each backed by differing levels of trade unions demanding different levels of pay and working conditions. Consider 'CrossRail UK' the price of that is considerable when compared with a country such as Turkey (If they were to undertake such a project).

i think the biggest issue is the cost of doing business in the state of New York, the absurd cost of labor from NYC Unions and the plain cost of living for all those involved for the contractors to house their crews. These contractors would almost be better off buying or building their own hotel with shuttles outside of the city to bring workers back and forth NYC is so expensive. I love seeing these huge works projects in europe and asia It makes me feel great seeing these nations thrive. Turkey was never thought of as a huge economic power house until the late 2000's... now look at them go. What a magnificent testiment to human ingenuity.

Those large public works projects would get built without the government, tax dollars, and unions. Move to Somalia or Haiti if you like small government, few taxes, and no regulations.

Designing this for light vehicles only is a mistake IMO. In my country authorities did the same with highway infrastructure and now it all comes breaking down because road transportation is skyrocketing all across Europe - putting too much pressure on bridges and tunnels. But still very impressive though.
