The Eureka Effect: Revisited

The Eureka Effect got a buff and I've been using it a lot in the recent weeks since it was changed. It now allows you to pick up more metal off the field than before, as well as gives you a level three teleporter for 250 metal... TOTAL. Here, I talk about my updated opinion and show off a few tricks I've learned when playing around with it.

I've seen people bring this up before, and here's what I think happened: When the Righteous Bison was originally made, it was designed to hit people only once, like the other penetration weapons. However, due to a glitch, it hit people multiple times, and if they were running away, it'd hit them even more. The TF2 devs at the time thought this was a neat little quirk, and decided to go the "Yeah, we planned that all along" route. Them new devs showed up, saw there was a glitch in the game that hadn't been fixed yet, and thought to themselves "This can't be right. Get rid of it!" and fixed it. Of course, I don't *know* if this is what happened, but I like to think it was somewhere along those lines :P

dennik55 Lol also true. My favorite thing to do to new engies is to put a sapper on the entrance, then stand on it (cloaked of course) waiting for them to remove the sapper. Newer engies have a tendency to stand on the exit when removing the sapper lol.

***** Teleporters are the most important building an engie makes. Walking to the entrance is also usually safer, pybros aren't as common there. You can then harass the enemy team which makes it so they don't cover the engineer. At the very least, constantly sapping the teleporter forces the engineer to choose whether to lose the teleporter, or to give up the sentry when your team attacks. Also, if you destroy the entrance and not the exit, the engineer HAS to go back to spawn to bring it back up, which means there is a period where the engineer can't repair his nest.

To the people asking me "Well then... NOW which wrench is the worst?" In my opinion, there aren't any clearly "bad" wrenches right now. I like them all equally for specific situations. The Stock, Jag, Eureka Effect, Southern Hospitality and the Gunslinger all have their situational positives and negatives - which is great!

Because of the recent buff to this weapon, there are technically *NO* bad Engineer weapon anymore only weapons that are people's least favourite like the Pomson 6000, the Short Circuit and the dredged Gunslinger and Mini Sentry. Although I think if the got another buff in the future (which to be honest I don't think it needs one at all), they could make it teleport to any active buildings, make teleporters recharge 25% faster, able to build two-way teleporters like in MvM where it would cost in original 125 metal, have 50% more health but builds and repairs 50% slower but maybe at the cost of you moving 25% slower while hauling making you slower than a Heavy and you not being able to take any active teleporters.

A useful trick I found is the put your Entrance and Sentry at spawn, then run to where you're building the nest, picking up a medium ammo box en route. When you arrive at your nest, plonk down an Exit and a Dispenser, then teleport to spawn. While you're in the animation, switch to the Jag. When you touch the cabinet, it will switch over and give you the Jag. Quickly upgrade your teleporter and Sentry to Level 3, then teleport through and set up your gun. The dispenser will have been building up metal all this time, which you can use to upgrade it to level 3. It's not possible on all maps, and it relies on you knowing where you're going to be setting up, but it can really help shave a few seconds off setting up.

I'm really glad they buffed engi & the eureka effect. After playing with it for a couple of hours, it is really nice to be able to go back to spawn/exit on demand for falling back/destroying sappers. I think it can go up there between the jag and stock.

I think the eureka effect deserves more love; it’s my most used wrench and it’s just really fun! I think it’s the second best engi melee (to the gunslinger). The ammo loss from packs is slightly unsatisfying for me, but teleporting away in front of that heavy/soldiers cheeky and amazing! If you don’t like it, try again cause it’s actually amazing

Sir Llama III yea, agree with Spnin, not the Jag. I say the SH, because since spies can cloak and end bleed sooner, that's been a big nerf to that weapon.

At this point, I can't safely say that any one wrench is all-around worse than the others. I think every wrench is viable at this point in time, even the SH. However, some wrenches are more situational than others, which is a good thing.

I can honestly say that engies that use the SH are still the most annoying engies as spy (well next to jag, because crits lol). Sure, I can cloak to end the bleed faster, but then I can't do anything until I come out of cloak, and a good engie will just kill a bleeding cloaked spy since the cloak doesn't hide them while bleeding, and the cloaked spy can't fight back.

Hey Dane, I have a question, is it smart to hide a tele in a spot, then wait for the blue team to push so that the tele is behind them, and then activate the teleporter? I've tried this in casual matches, and with a little voice comm, it works great. I just wanted to see if this was viable, specifically on payload maps.

in many situations Southern Hospitality is upgrade to stock, which help you hunting spies at cost of getting fried by pyros that wont get near you when you have lvl 3.

It's basically a straight upgrade. If you're rushed by a Pyro, you're probably dead. And spies don't have things that set you on fire, and the bleed effect can function as a more subtle form of afterburn.

may be a niché question. but do you think the eureka effect is worth it in mvm? i tend not to think so because of sentry focus moreso than teleporters. since the set up you need to do in pre wave time has infinite metal, and no real downsides to it. and metal pickup is important

Man, ever since they buffed the Eureka Effect, I've been using it more (mostly to set up my teles and sentry, then warp back to spawn and switch to a different loadout).

I love that someone at Valve when they made this change was doing the math perfectly. Using the Eureka Effect for rollouts is perfect if you can get one medium ammo pack. 2 Teleporters for 50 metal, Dispenser for 100 metal, leaving you at 50 metal. Pick up a medium ammo box, the “debuff” makes it 80 metal, which gives you 130 metal, exactly what you need to make your Sentry Gun before popping back to base and swapping to another wrench.

I think one of the most fun strategies with the Eureka effect is to sneak past enemies, set up a teleporter in some wack-ass location that nobody would think to look, and just have your team ambush the shit out of the enemy from behind.

But the reason i love to play engineer, when i first played engineer i basically did the complete opposite of what Dane says in his videos and i got frustrated every time we needed an engineer and I had to be the engie. but now that i know how engineer works i can actually do some engineer gameplay properly(except for the fact that most of the time i like to play as a friend-gineer(friendly engie) and rancho relaxo in place where the enemy won't care if i'm their.)
