The reason is that Germans began exploring Lake Garda in the 1960ties by travelling with their VW Käfer (beetle) over the alpes to Italies most famous lake. It was a hype in these days and still is.

the hat is practical because it could be rolled for storing. But he should wear the chin strap not under his chin, but behind the ears and tighten it to lower side of the head/neck. Like canadian montain police do. And his hat is a little to wide for his head. May be that it can be made more tighten with an inbuild strap? But chin strap in neck tighten will also do it.

I made my first foreign vacation with my family on the Lake Garda just across the Lake from Malcesine in Prabione 300m above sealevel. Gorgeous video, Nick! I LOVE Malcesine. I used to stay in the youth hostel (not there any more) which was a fabulous old villa right at the water, and practice singing opera in the gardens. (I didn’t disturb anyone, I was careful to do it when noone was chilling). It’s twinned with Neuburg an der Donau, near where I live and where I have sung a lot since then… and home to the fabulous Spitzl that I filmed for you. Ah, die Welt ist klein. I’m glad to see someone else uploading Italy on a German channel. I found an amazing ruin I‘m considering restoring and had to share it, it’s too cool to keep to myself.

@@uliwehner at the time I was intrigued by all the signs saying „Eis“ and how the Italians all understood so much German! But that youth hostel had the best position, a short walk along the lake to the town. I’m sure the equivalent accommodation (possibly not sharing a room and a bathroom with 12 other people) would make me think twice, or more… It was fabulous. I have a photo of me there, I might post it in the community. The breakfast coffee was always- always! cold, but for 9 mille lire a night, included. Such good memories.

Since Goethe, Italy was the embodiment of beauty and elegance, "das Land wo die Zitronen blühn", sun, history and picturesque landscapes. Young people from wealthy families used to have their "grand tour" to Italy or to Greece to complete their education and to see the remains of the ancient Roman culture. Rome, Venice, Florence, and Naples were their favorite destinations. Though modern tourists are more focussed on beach life, the admiration of Italy and its treasures is still alive.

Nick, you are quite a daring man! Travelling to Italy in August is at the height of Italian vacation season, especially around August 15, Ferragosto. I am surprised that it was not more crowded in your videos than what it was. Figuratively speaking, Italy shuts down for its people in August to honor their hard work and most are on their vacations. It is best to travel to Italy in other months. Great video and it has peaked my interest to go there. Thanks.

Thanks for filming this! I love Gardasee! We try to go every year since it’s not too long a drive. I’m am sending this to my family in the US because we would love for them to meet us there. A tip for people with children: rent a mobile home at a campground. There are tons of activities for the kids, and it is usually reasonably priced (except in the high season, of course.) We usually stay in the southern portion of the lake near Peschiera, Lazise, Garda, or Sirmione. Also, this side of the lake, I would say, is much more active. The other side near Moniga del Garda is quieter, in my opinion. It doesn’t take long to drive up to Malcesine or Riva for the day. Great place for a vacation! (Btw, now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard another American there.🤔)

Nice view at 2:34 from being at the northwestern hilly side of this lake. Looks like an ancient UFO in the shape of a saucer being stranded on the other side of the lake. But "secret" - I don't think so. On the west side of the lake it may not be as crowded since it is a more mountainous region, but as you go east/southeast or even south (towns like Garda, Bardolino, Peschiera or even Sirmione) it gets worse and worse. I feel a little sad for the people who live there due to the current drought and water shortage in the region.

If someone is looking for a truly hidden gem, I would suggest lake Ohrid in Macedonia, it is right on the border between Macedonia and Albania, and half an hour from Greece. Orthodox churches, strong Greek influence, good food and beaches. Very interesting place to visit.

It is just so much further away from Germany, not as easy to drive there for just a weekend.

@@einundsiebenziger5488 sure, but then it is not a "hidden gem" we are talking about, but rather the closest lake to germany. If you want convenience you will most likely go to an overcrowded lake garda, if you want a little less known place you will drive longer (or fly into skopje) and see something little more unknown. It's all about what is a priority to you. I was talking about something that is less known as an alternative, and if you don't care about that, than sure Lake Garda is a great choice. But I can still offer information to people who might be interested.

Beautiful location. Wish I would have known about Lake Garda when I toured Europe in 1970, but I did get to Bellagio and was overwhelmed by the beauty there. And Laura is such a lovely asset to your videos. Would love to hear her speak more. Maybe the two of you could visit Monte Sacro in the Italian Lakes and reenact the famous hike that the great philosopher Nietzsche eperienced there in 1882 with the only real love of his life, the muse Lou-Andreas Salome. From that experience, the great "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" was conceived. Would be happy to send you some dialogue that they shared with each other while there, from their diaries, if you are interested.

Love Lake Garda! Five years ago I started off in Sirmione near that water castle, amazing, and used the ferry service to go to Malcesine, took the gondola up to Monte Baldo, and then on to Riva del Garda. From what I can see from your video, I ate at the same table you did in Riva, looking out toward the Lake! Hope you made it to Limone, where Lemon Cello originates!

Before moving to Germany I was also not familiar with Gardasee. (It's actually quite large.) But here in Munich it seems to be one the go-to destinations, hence, the throng of Germans there.

I was starting the video, biting my nails, sitting on the edge of my chair, my palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy, you got the idea! And then the BIG reveal, Gardasee, ok, ... what? Wow, that's a hidden gem for a German.
