If osu is becoming more mainstream, I'm all for it. There's just so much competitive depth and history for what the game has to offer across all four gamemodes, and within its 15 year history, countless legends have made names for themselves in big ways. Vaxei's tournament dominance, the United States juggernaut, mrekk, WhiteCat, Cookiezi are just few of the many things this game has to offer. Cloud9 also closely follows the community, so there might be a gigantic shake up in the scene in the near future. Great video as always!

crazy to see this upload now of all times; i'm playing in the world cup for osu!taiko, another osu gamemode, currently! every gamemode has its own history completely separate from 'normal' osu, or osu!standard as most ppl in the community know it. for example, taiko is based on an existing rhythm game, taiko no tatsujin, but unlike the games standard is derived from taiko is VERY popular in japan, and so japan have won the last 9 (i think) taiko world cups without ever looking like losing one and have 9 of the top 10 players by rank, while i don't know too much about the other two modes, osu!catch and osu!mania, but as far as i know they're both dominated by south korea (mania is a bit more complicated once you start talking about different ways to play it, but that's for someone that knows more about the mode to explain)
@jijmotorp3079
@jijmotorp3079 2 жыл бұрын
I believe only 7k is dominated by SK, 4k a lot of countries are good. Japan domination of taiko is unmatched, especially since a lot of the top korean catch players stopped/do not participate in tournaments
@overdahedge2014
@overdahedge2014 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, 4key has had brazil win the last 2 years iirc in terms of individual players i can say _yu68 is the best there's ever been in taiko, literally the kind of player to go a full match without dropping a 100 in like semis of a tourney, seren58 is probably the best there is right now though once again, can't speak much for other modes in terms of that
@whenisdinner2137

As someone who played in the world cup and frequently plays tournaments, I think the scene still potential to grow, especially with the addition of featured artists it may be easier to get eSports team backing for tournaments that exclusively use songs from these artists. As the biggest hurdle for expansion of the scene is probably the legal/copyright issues.

@ymir.2
@ymir.2 2 жыл бұрын
@@ramseydoon8277 if it gets big enough they'll find it, you can personally ask them to map something. Also to be "osu! Worthy" the music doesn't have to just be good, it has to be easily mappable for the mapping criteria

@@ymir.2 Nah, it just has to be good. I wouldn't consider Frums', Silentroom's or Camellia's songs "easily mappable", but they're still some of the most respected artists on the featured artists lineup.
@vulixirus
@vulixirus 2 жыл бұрын
@@jedel1043 i think the most important criteria for "easily mappable" is a steady bpm. when real people are playing real instruments, the tempo can slide a little over the course of a song just due to human error, and having to manually readjust the bpm/offset throughout a song for it is extreamly annoying and will often turn a mapper off mapping a song. this is why people recommend mapping stuff with midi drums when starting out.

What makes me come back to the game is the amazing community. I think I never experienced any toxicity when playing multi, even in tournies (I participated in some amateur 30k tournies). Until recently most multiplayer lobbies were organized through trust, reaching around host and only in the last few years chat bots for auto rotate took over. The mapping scene is also completely community organized and overall just really chill. Love this game and its community, even though I dont really play that much anymore

I've personally been playing osu for over 5 years now (on and off) and as of recent I've been logging in at least every other day, though that spot is being taken by some VR rhythm games at the moment, this game is where I've met some amazing people that have helped me out in more ways than you could imagine and I still talk with some of them daily even after years. I hold this game dear to me and I always look forward to new mappers and generations of players, I myself am already seeing changes in how people are able to play, considering how players ranked at 100K and above (The lower the rank the better) are now playing maps that only the top 30K used to play when I was around that rank. It's amazing to see the generations just get more and more naturally gifted over time, though with enough dedication anyone can do what they want. I really appreciate the video that you've posted since it told me about the history of the game, which I had never truly looked into before, it's an eye-opener to realize where everything started. @@ProofWinter I just tried it today. I installed it and played 3 songs. First, I was confused : do I have to maintain the key during a slider, or click again at the end ? It wasn't said. I had to google it (and I guessed correctly instinctively, I guess you just have to hold the button and release it right at the end of the slider). And... well it's nice but it gets hard quickly to follow all those sliders, and the timings in the songs are sometimes... not super intuitive or following what you hear, which I guess just boils down to the talent of the map maker. I wonder what it feels like to play with a tablet instead of a mouse. After playing Beat Saber tho, it feels a bit underwhelming. But Beat Saber is unbeatable. It's seriously a blast when you start clearing Expert difficulty songs.

I have witnessed various games in my lifetime that grew to be massive e-sports like DOTA and League. The thing is, I can definitely see Osu becoming an e-sport. Team matches have clearly defined win conditions and high stress situations. Some level of tactics is involved too such as what map to pick or who's the player to send in for this certain map. The game has so many different playstyles and almost no one can master all of them. E-sport teams can definitely be built with different people having different playstyles. That is one of the factors of a game becoming a massive e-sport. It has to have enough variety in it's playstyle and players to be interesting to a lot of people.

@@Dullsonic3 well... Don't play EVERY day. Taking breaks is just as important. It's like weightlifting. It's during these breaks that you allow your muscles (in osu's case, muscle memory) to rest and rebuild to become stronger for the next time you weightlift (play osu).

the biggest roadblock to becoming a "legitimate" esport is the amount of unlicensed music. Not very many companies are going to risk their reputation sponsoring a game that survives because a lot of music labels haven't filed a big takedown, yet. That and the scoring system is god awful and makes no sense competitively to anyone who plays other big rhythm games

Well i'm some noname 5 digit, but whatever. I started to play this game in march of 2015 and i'm probably went right in the most cool time of osu life, because i started to play when old legends played this game yet and inspired me (such as WWW, Azer, Rrtyui, Cookiezi, Rustbell, Angelsilm, Rafis, Kynan, HappyStick, _Index, Rucker, Xilver and so on) and i went right in time when Aspire maps started to grow, this game give me a lot of fun and access to a pretty huge community, and also this game introduced LapFox Trax's music for me (and today it's my most favorite and exemplary artist for my entire life, (s)he inspired me a lot) and just in general this game gives me a lot of music and artists, who i listen to now and know about them. It's surprisingly how such a simple and repeating game has a such big history and community within and around it, i'm so thankfully for all mappers, who create all those beautiful maps, you all literally an artists (and of course guys who making storyboards too, y'all are chads). They inspired me too, so after 7 years of playing i started to make my own maps :D And now we're going into new era of osu! AKA Osu!Lazer, so hope to continue this history of osu with all of you together further, high respect to all chads, mappers, pro-players, streamers and content-makers who sharing the positive energy with others and help them to live and be fine, to all informatic channels, which sharing many stories and useful information with us, all kindly and respectful players, community and game, which gives me a lot of fun and new artists and inspirations, and of course to our main chad Peppy, thanks to you for all of this. :) I'm so happy to see how much popular it becomes today now. Damn i playing this game almost half of my life, holly molly, osu is a part of my life and history of my life and this world around me.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Osu!, is in fact, osu!. The game has an all-lowercase name, mirroring its creator Dean "peppy" Herbert's habit of avoiding capital letters online. In a similar vein, many components of the game and related projects also have lowercase names, such as pp, the four gamemodes (osu!standard, osu!taiko, osu!catch, and osu!mania), and lazer. Due to many people habitually capitalizing the first letters of given names and being unfamiliar with names containing punctuation, this game is often incorrectly called "Osu!", "Osu", or even "OSU!". There really is an Osu! - the name is an abbreviation of Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, a rhythm game for Nintendo DS that inspired peppy to make osu!. The circle clicking game people know today is osu!, with three lowercase letters and an exclamation mark.
