Excellent... I like 'The Man who was Thursday' by GKC. "It is such stuff as nightmares are made on-but, in the end, a dream come true. To the question, “Who converted you to Catholicism?” Mrs. Chesterton was known to reply, “The devil.”

I love your reviews. They are full of the relevant information and in a reasonable length. Chesterton’s mother and child analogy is surprisingly deep when considered in the context of the entirety of Jesus’s life especially at the crucifixion. There’s a reason why St Maximilian Kolbe, Doctor of the Church, referred to our blessed mother as co-redemptrix (meaning not equal to, but in participation with).

Don't have much to add to your analysis; however, since you mentioned how it's influence on C.S. Lewis, here are a few more interesting facts about "The Everlasting Man": Martin Luther King Jr. quoted from it in his book "Strength to Love" Suspense author Dean Koontz, in an interview with "Gilbert" magazine (December 2009), when asked what the first book by Chesterton he had read, stated: "'Orthodoxy', and it had a powerful effect. Then I read 'The Everlasting Man,' which I think was the better of the two. Together they were like a one-two punch." Marcus Mumford of the band Mumford and Sons, when asked in an interview of any "favorite authors or poets that may or may not have influenced your writing", answered by stating: "I’m really enjoying G.K Chesterton at the moment, still," and followed up by stating, "I really want to get into 'Orthodoxy' but right now I want to read these three chapters my brother recommended from 'Everlasting Man'". Evelyn Waugh wrote concerning it: "It is a great, popular book, one of the few really great popular books of the century; the triumphant assertion that a book can be both great and popular. And it needs no elucidation. It is brilliantly clear. It met a temporary need and survives as a permanent monument." (That said, while he loved the *substance*, he didn't like the style and wanted to rewrite it.)

@@BiblicalBookworm, he could have written a more researched book to correct some of his "shower thoughts" and give citations, maybe earn more fans, but this book feels to me like having a live conversation with a friend where you're not worried about being precise, you're just throwing things out there hoping something will click. One thing that stuck with me, for example, was in the chapter of God in the cave and that tension Christians have no problem with, such as contemplating the un containable creator that holds the cosmos in place who also laid in a manger and couldn't even reach the heads of the cattle nearby. In my particular case it may be that I had already filled my mind with data and facts, and he helped me see it should be balanced out with imaginative imagery because there's much more to the world than merely the empirical. It feels like Chesterton and I have a similar sense of humor and laugh at the same dumb jokes while others look at us thinking "that didn't even make sense, why are you laughing so much?"

I really like that analogy of the statue of Virgin and Child. Your link to "shower thoughts" is a good way of looking at it, I find he's clearly very witty and when that works you get some really insightful and often funny ways of quickly explaining things you had never even thought about, but when they don't quite work it can be a bit tedious to read and you worry he's sacrificing a good point for a neater pun or paradox. Have you read any other Chesterton?

I appreciate GKC because I'm in my 60's. Not sure I would like him at 25 because I'd be taking a lot of what he concludes on faith, rather than knowing he nailed it by my having experienced so much of it. He's the most amazing writer for that reason IMO. Great review.

I was thinking about your review on Everlasting Man that book I believe was written in response to H.G. Wells book, he also wrote a nice book called Orthodoxy . He would meet with fellow authors at The Eagle and the Child. There he met other authors and got into debates. I would recommend Orthodoxy which is his joining the Catholic church. In your review of C.S. Lewis I found God in the Dock by C.S. Lewis very intersting. Sincerely. Mike Orzel

It is worth mentioning that Goliath is not a typical Semitic name, it’s probably Greek. My favorite chapter has to be the Antiquity of Civilization. At archaeological sites of Gath, Ashdod and Gad they leave a lot of Minoan pottery. Amos 9:7 speaks of Philistines coming from Caphtor which is Minoan, Crete. Fascinating stuff.

Gk Chesterton as the Catholic 'Prince of Paradox' maybe.., maybe doesn't wanted to quote anyone other than his reasonable reason of virtue of humility, at the same time it maybe the readers might be the sole judge of his work just as socrates was named the most learned by the oracle of delphi only to put to death by saying he knows nothing.

I recently got back from The Big Island of Hawaii, I realized that animals destroy each other and potentially the quality of the land. And it has always seemed strange how animals fit in with this world so naturally with their senses. It is so important to remember what Jesus came to teach, to store up treasure in heaven. We do not fit in with this planet entirely, there will be a supernatural end. I went to Sunday mass at St Josephs in Hilo. They have a very nice priest there. Please pray for the people of Hawaii. Chesterton is a joy to read purely for his writing ability, but you are right some of the arguments are not very strong. As much as I like Chesterton, he can tend towards linguistic flourish in replace of substantive arguments. You gave a very fair review.

I just read this book this week and loved it for many reasons, but as someone who has studied Vedanta and Buddhism for decades, I can tell you that he doesn’t have a good understanding of either. For example, he claims that Hindus engage in the literal worship of idols, which is flat out wrong.

1:22 which is actually the category that 99% of believers fall into. Most have extremely shallow and weak theology/philosophy. I was reading some text of my church about murder the other day and the argument it was making was something like this "If you are a sinner and get murdered before you can repent you can use this excuse to the lord so as to not go to hell i.e. that you would have repented had you not being killed. Thus God can't send you to hell". Absolutely pathetic, taking god for a fool. That's the problem with relegion, GKC might have made some excellent points in regards the meaning of Christianity, but at the end of the day the theist consensus doesn't resemble that at all.
