Just shows how dominant the British Invasion was in late 1964, when an original song as good as "Gone, Gone, Gone" by The Everly Brothers couldn't become a hit -- but over 40 years later an almost identical arrangement by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant becomes a world-wide phenomenon. Sometimes timing is everything.

Yesterday I cried for hours after learning of Phil's passing. They were my first "favorite artist" and always my favorite duo. As many have said, they taught a generation how to sing harmony. It took me 50 years to notice that Phil always stayed a little farther from the mike than Don, so his higher harmony part wouldn't overpower Don's melody. Glad that Phil lived to see the unique tribute of an entire album of theirs (1958 folk collection "Songs Our Daddy Taught Us") being covered, cleverly named "Foreverly" by Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones. Phil was pleased with it. Now Phil is harmonizing in heaven with Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Roy Orbison, Sam Cook, Otis Redding and so many others we've lost. Prayers to the family.

Man they had great harmonies. And their songs have withstood the test of time gaining new fans long after they stopped performing together. I heard Gone, Gone, Gone on the radio today and it keeps playing in my head. And followed by Kathy's Clown in this video, I am reminded of a close friend who moved in with his girlfriend named Kathy for a year or two about 45 years ago. After he moved out he made mention of being Kathy;s Clown.

Nice of Dick Clark to interview a couple guys from Shenandoah, Iowa! Don and Phil were the sons of Ike and Margaret Everly, who were live performers on KMA radio in Shenandoah in the 1940's and 50's. As you mention in the desription, "Gone Gone Gone" was a huge change in style for the Everlys. They were struggling to stay on the charts by this time and the song adapts more of a British hard driving style. The change didn't work and the Everlys didn't have any more big hits until "Bowling Green" brought a brief minor comeback in the late '60's. I think it's a good idea to start a new channel for any post '65 music because the music and society really changed after the British invasion.

Yep, I remember it well. I thought the Everly Brothers had had about enough of the Beatles and decided to put 'beat' back into American R'nR'. Alas few heard 'Gone, gone, gone". At least until almost 50 years later. Cool song then and Don and Phil were masters of their craft.
