In the second not only he's got a clearer objective that makes him go right back into the action of his own accord, but his gameplay gives him a lot more tools to face the horrors of the simulation - the part where you get to fight all the bosses of the first game with your new and improved arsenal is the mother of all cathartic moments.

Honestly, The Evil Within is one of my favorite video games of all time. The surreal visuals, the concept of STEM and how it worked (I also thought it was really cool how the DLC shows that each person can see things differently inside STEM), the monster designs, the way it combines elements of both Silent Hill and Resident Evil with the monster designs and locations (or at least what little of the Resident Evil series I knew at the time since I was focusing on Silent Hill. I'm still a newcomer though and I'm long overdue on finishing my journey to play the series. I only finished 7 knowing that it doesn't reflect the rest of the series, but I still have to finish Village, Zero and the RE1 remake. I wasn't procrastinating on purpose though), the huge surreal action set pieces and the gameplay. There's just so much I love about it and I loved the DLC, they were satisfying both from a story and gameplay standpoint, with the last one being the most fun. I'm still overdue on finishing the second one, but it's definitely an improvement and I'm glad that people didn't dismiss it because it's a sequel to a game that they didn't like.

The real tragedy of this story is that in the midst of mikami's unused concepts, there could have been 1 that would have grown into a legendary game/franchise that the world has never seen before but because of how management simply wanted him to deliver a rehashed RE4, he was more or less 'coaxed' into making one.

The second one still holds pretty solid critical/fan scores but considering I can't even find sales figures it's safe to say it wasn't a smash hit. To be fair, if your name doesn't contain the words "resident" and "evil" most horror games aren't going to sell what these companies want these days. Didn't stop studios from trying for the longest time, but it the current gaming landscape I'm afraid this is a genre that may be left to mostly indies outside of the big 1. (We'll have to see if Silent Hill can get back it's juice). Was quite surprised and happy to see this episode in my feed. Cool to learn more about the history. I adore these games.

Late 2014 truly was the year of survival horror (especially with fixing the problems of AAA survival horror from the late 2000s-early 2010s). Alien Isolation and The Evil Within came out in October seven days apart (even though The Evil Within was marketed as being a return to survival horror, I think Alien Isolation did that better, and this is coming from someone who loves The Evil Within with a passion and would mostly passionately defend it). In August that same year, we got two "indie titles" that revolutionized horror games (I use quotes because one of them pretends to be an indie title before revealing itself to be AAA), P.T. and Five Nights at Freddy's. They both came out 4 days apart from each other.

Learning this was made on idtech 5 answers so many of the questions I had about why The Evil Within *looks* like that. That absolutely atrocious bloom, weird lighting and slimy wet textures all make sense now I know it was built on the engine that powered RAGE. As an aside, the whole STEM thing from EW1 actually really frustrated me as I played the game, because I had no idea the whole thing was supposed to be inside the mind if a serial killer until right at the end, and I thought the game was just throwing weird settings and crazy scenarios at me just to be spooky without having any cohesion. If you didn't know you were inside STEM, the ending really comes off as "it was all a dream" too. Evil Within 2 putting the STEM machine right at the start and saying "hey, you're about to go do survival horror by way of Inception, fuckle your seatbelts" was one of the many, MANY changes it made that make it the best sequel I've ever played in terms of improvement over the first.

I will put it to you this way: I think "The Evil Within" had the major problem that when the VR angle was revealed, people who wanted a supernatural horror experience were deeply disappointed. I noticed interest fall off as soon as these reveals were made, and while I didn't have an issue with it, I do admit I see why many people felt the whole reveal made a lot of it seem to matter less, not to mention the whole "it's VR" excuse meant they didn't have to worry as much about explaining anything or building up a new occult mythology of some sort. As far as why they wanted to shutter the studio, it was created for specific talent, and I don't think there was any desire to run it without them. While "Hi Fi Rush" received a lot of praise, I am not sure if it got the kind of attention, or giant truckloads of cash, that they actually wanted. An investor interested in more mid-range titles seemed to be interested, which is good, but I do see why this likely happened. They built the studio for specific people they hoped would make mega-blockbusters eventually, and those people left, so just keeping it around as a bit player was not what the investment of time or resources was for.

I didn't like the evil within at first. I bought it again in 2017 just as the sequel launched and loved it with the full screen mode. I played 2 a few years ago on ps5 at 60fps and loved it

Even though I loved it from the start, I totally understand where you are coming from. Sometimes I have to reinstall a Game several times before it clicks with me 🙂

I played this game on the PC and had an amazing time with it. I even played Evil Within 2. I completed both of those games.

I feel like I must have lived in the only place on earth that got advertisement for The Evil Within 2. I saw the trailers a hundred times and was basically counting down the days until it came out. I absolutely loved it. It completely blew my expectations out of the water and IMO improved on the original in pretty much every single way. And then I was baffled when I realized that none of my friends had played it (and still haven’t to this day), and most people online apparently had no idea The Evil Within ever got a sequel.

You should do an episode on Clive Barker's Jericho. It had so much potential to be an amazing and successful game.

The series took a while to grow on me but its actually pretty cool. I like part 1 for the atmosphere and story. Part 2 had much tighter gameplay and it was more forgiving in combat.

One of my fav horror games of all time. I’ve got the platinum for it and played it more than I can count. It’s up there with re and silent hill for me. I loved the sequel to but ew1 is still my fav.

I loved both these games, I still play them periodically. Shame we'll never get that third entry.

Whereas i found the first Evil Within to be quite rocky, there was so much promise behind this as a branching series

I lovingly describe the first as my favorite bad game (and I genuinely just love the second).

Yeah, I wanted to like the first game, and I do like a lot of aspects about it, but I mostly found it very frustrating. The Evil Within 2, on the other hand, is one of my favorite survival horrors ever made.

The Evil Within 2 is a better Resident Evil game than Resident Evil 3 remake. Change my mind

This is the only saga I didn't miss the multiplayer like Resident Evil or The Last Of Us that are made for being coop. The Evil Within 1 and 2 did a great job with the gameplay and story to show the psicological horror to feel a second player won't work in this game.

When she left Ghostwire? At the time she was pretty open about quitting because it was too stressful trying to balance the needs of her team vs demands from the publisher. IIRC she had a kid the year after leaving.

I struggled getting through the first evil within. I started evil within 2 when it was free on ps plus, and immediately got lost in the beginning when u free roam outside and lost interest. I had no idea what i was doing and the story off rip wasn't driving me. I even thought the first story was too much of a headache and forced my way through the game lowering the difficulty as that game was frustratingly difficult at times. Didn't have the fun i was looking for and im a resident evil gamer so maybe i was expecting something more easy to follow 🤷🏾♂️

I used to not care for The Evil Within that much but upon replaying it just last month learned the error of my ways. There are so many intricacies and layersof mechanical depth. I have a friend that has done the 1-hit-death AKUMU difficulty multiple times and swears it's the only way to play that game and how it is *meant* to be played.

It's sad this franchise never really took off. The Evil Within 1 was a decent game but it was lacking in some areas and I could see why it didn't resonate that well but The Evil Within 2 is a genuinely great game and one of the most criminally underappreciated of the 8th generation.

2:27 please tell me you're doing Nights Into Dreams. I was a Sega Saturn kid, and I always love videos based around that console. Last Bronx would be fun, too. That game deserves a remake/reboot.

We need an entire series dedicated to Bethesda Quality Assurance. You could make an entire season on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’s dungeon design alone!
