The OM648 was FIRST introduced in 2002 not in 2000 !!! The S and E Classes you are talking about have the OM613 straight six CDI ... the first Car with this Motor (OM648) was the w220 Mopf/Facelift model in 2002. After that the w211 was the next and ONLY Model to find an OM648 in. Just 3 years after its first appeal it was discontinued because of the v6 OM642 wich was more modern in many ways... tbh i struggle to know wich are the main differences between the OM613 and OM648 but there are some ;) At first they look almost the same. They actually share a good number of parts. But after a little while you notice more and more differences

The current iteration of the engine is not run in race conditions at anywhere near the RPMs where it attains peak power and torque, what the current iteration of the engine achieves is completely otherworldly for a Diesel, that is it can rev beyond 9000rpm and is licking the 10 000rpm barrier. This is completely beyond traditional engineering of a diesel engine, even if you take into account advances in lowering a diesels reciprocating weight and ability rev with computer controlled engine management with the CDI. And it maintains a power output of just south of 450hp to the top of the that rev range and some 500Nm of torque, this is where Teemu is operating the engine when he wants to make the tires spin while maintaining the sort of slides and billows of tire smoke, that he is able to compete with the gasoline powered solutions on offer, north of 8000rpm. Since peak power and torque is not very relevant for drifting as you're ability to keep as much additional speed into the tires with maintaining control over this at your leisure is the key, while making enough torque and power to keep the tires spinning much faster than the car is transferring into actual forward motion. This is why for example, Wankel's are still built for the sport while no other sport would even consider them as a viable option for racing a car. They like to rev fast and make usable power at their top end, while they certainly are not very conducive to making much torque, in any case, even with high boost levels. The reciprocating assembly just won't do that in the Wankel rotor and that's why they keep adding rotors to them all the time, and seeing what that does. LOL- They like to spin fast, and regardless of what type of engine you build this out of, the power and torque figures at high rpm are going to be drastically lower than what the thing can punch out at the peak. After the system peaks, these figures come down like an anvil in freefall and keeping this from dropping below usable levels is extremely difficult, this is because after that point the amount of energy needed to keep the thing moving faster than it wants to rev, is not only substracted from that figure, this resistance to going beyond this barrier will increase usually at a exponential rate after that point, so even if in simplified theory by making an engine rev twice as fast than an engine of the same displacement, should double the power, this isn't something you can achieve linearly, this point is defined by bore and stroke of the engine. This is defined by the stroke and bore of the engine. You'd want to halve the stroke and double the bore to go from an engine to which 5000rpm is the end of the world to achieving 10 000rpm with the same displacement of the engine. What these guys have not done, is significantly modify any of that and they've somehow managed to build a fucking diesel engine that is reciprocating at a peak rev range most diesel engine building engineers consider completely impossible to achieve in any situation. Yeah, that's black magic alright. Shame most people have little interest in how fucking beyond the abilities of literally nearly all major diesel engine manufacturers R&D labs this thing is and myopically stare at the fucking peak power and torque figures, when Teemu having even 50% of that available at a engine reciprocal rate that's considered _impossible_ to attain with a diesel engine, is literally pushing diesel engine dynamics beyond modern fucking engineering on a level that the contemporary wizards for achieving impossible dynamic features with a fucking gasoline engine are literally Cosworth and the T.50 for Gordon Murray Automotive. And those guys play with a much bigger budget for one.
