Araki didn't have Jojo die just to move on to to the next guy, he had him die to display the fact thay legacy transcends one's life. Jojo dies, without any tangible examples of legacy, and yet his actions create one, even if he won't see it. Hence, "Phantom Blood", the invisible mark of legacy and descendancy. Across the parts I've seen I have to say I feel as though the best death had to be Shigechi's in part 4. It's an incredibly good combination of both types mentioned, you watch him struggle to get away from Kira, severely injured, and when it reaches the point where he believes he's safe it's suddenly turned on its head, and he's blown out of existence. It's equally slow, painful and tragic, but also manages to simultaneously be instantaneous and unfair. On top of that it's balanced with seeing his great change in character being suddenly cut short, with Shigechi being introduced as this selfish brat, and then growing in such a short time that his last thoughts and intentions are of protecting his family and town. He's a character who in no way deserves to die or has anything that would make him a more likely target than any of the rest of the cast, he's just a child even, and he's killed by sheer bad luck, making it incredibly tragic.

One of my favorite minor antagonists death in part 5 was Illuso's. He had just stopped Purple Haze, and was about to shove the stand's arm into the mirror, he has a relief moment as he sees the light of victory right in front of his eyes, only to realize the light was from a train about to crush him. As he sees the capsule break all of his hope dissappears and turns into confusion, desesperation and sorrow, as he questions: Why? He had escaped the mirror, he sacrificed his arm, but he then realizes he was just delaying a gruesome death. His metabolic functions stop, all has dissapeared but pain & as he loses his face to Purple Haze's beating, he is left unrecognizable, and after all members of his team pass away, he is forgotten entirely, leaving nothing behind but a dark past, a murder case that will never be solved, and a life full of bad decisions. Edit: Wow, 191 likes, i'm glad y'all enjoyed my breakdown of Illuso's death. As always, stay fresh cheesebags!

Honestly, both Iggy and Kakyoin’s deaths were probably some of the ones that hit me the hardest, Kakyoin being my second or third favorite JoBro, and Iggy just being a fantastic character. But the deaths fit their characters. Iggy’s whole arc is about him originally not caring for the Crusaders or anyone really, but then after the Pet Shop fight, he does care. And thus, sacrifices himself to save Polnareff’s life against Vanilla Ice. And Kakyoin wanted his honor back for being lied to by DIO, and is so close to winning against him, but DIO could stop time. But even after he’s donuted and crashes into a waterfall, he still wants his friends to win, so with his dying breath, he gives Joseph a message through his final Emerald Splash. Iggy dies caring about his friends, and Kakyoin dies still believing in them.
@mrmastaofdesasta69945 жыл бұрын
You said how Araki turned death into something more cruel and realistic, but he did also do so with another part of the story: The relationship and conflict between the opposing parties. 1: Jonathan is the perfect Gentleman, while Dio is the Enemy of Mankind. 2: Again the opponent is an Enemy of mankind, but Joseph is not as purely good as Jonathan. 3: This time, it's a delinquent Jotaro against a reawakened Dio, who doesn't seem to want to destroy humainty anymore, but is still definitely a threat to our society. 4: Now it gets interesting. Our Protagonists are slightly delinquent, a bit more "good" than Jotaro, but for the first time, the enemy is a human. A Psychopath. but a human nonetheless. 5: Gang Members against Gang members, so basically both sides are criminals. As you surely noticed, which each part, the distinction between Good and Evil becomes less clear, as both sides get closer to each other.

spoiler for those who havent read part 6: I think jotaro's death was really interesting. From his introduction, he's been viewed as a total badass who cant possibly lose, completely demolishing all the enemies that get in his way and defeating dio with a somewhat asspull-ish revelation of being able to use time stop and throughout parts 4 and 6, hes still established as one of the strongest characters as we see how the others react to him and fear him. however in part 6 we start to see some weakness in our badass, now he has a daughter that he needs to protect. In his fight with Johngalli A and Pucci, its foreshadowed that his greatest downfall would be his carelessness when trying to protect those he loves. to protect jolyne from johngalli's bullets, he put himself in a situation where pucci could attack him, telling him the words "you were one step too late". later, at the end of the part, jotaro once again hears those words when he tries to protect jolyne from the thrown knives, triggering his PTSD and distracting him, leaving him not enough time to kill pucci in his time stop. His character arc in really neat, in part 3 he was your typical cool and unfazed protagonist, and although its hinted that he does have a caring side, we dont see much of it. fast forward to the end of part 6, as pucci stated, "your daughter is your weakness", a detrimental realization that killed the majority of the main cast.

Another thing that made Narancia’s death so heart breaking, was that right before he died, he finally started to dream and think for himself. He had always just followed orders and never really thought for himself. The moment he finally starts to dream, and finally has something to fight for other than the loyalty to his team and simply because he was told to, he was killed off screen and so suddenly. He never got to see his own dreams through, and at such a young age. Too young, in fact, he barely even got to live his life.

I thought the main reason Narancia died was because in the panic of switching bodies, Diavolo wanted to get rid of who he thought was the biggest threat - Giorno - but Narancia was just the unlucky guy in his body. Still no thematic reliance but also reinforces again how Diavolo would kill without a second thought ("hey, what if this isn't Giorno?") to protect himself.

I think what made Jonathan's death more impactful was Dio's reaction to his death and how it caught him off guard. It was as if Dio viewed Jonathan as an immortal, unable to die, and overcome any and all obstacles in his way. It was like a kid finally realizing the meaning of death and understanding it for the first time.

Jonathan, Zeppeli, Caesar) Part 3 & 4: Forfeiting/Retirement(Ex. Usually ends up with opponents cowering away or forfeiting surviving their battles with punches or knockouts) Part 5 & 6: Brutality and Lethal Deaths(Ex. Giorno causing Polpo’s death, Sorbet/Gelato’s death, Abbachio, Narancia, Diavolo, and entire JoJo cast of Part 6 dying at the end) Really interesting of how Araki changed up the acts of deaths and fights throughout the series

While I agree that death felt the most realistic in part 5 until that point, fate is still a very big thing in JoJo. And while Abbachio and Naranchia die relatively quickly and seemingly without progressing the story, we know they died because Mista changed fate by stopping Rolling Stones. It's also the reason why Bucciarati is revived and why Diavolo is beaten at the end. Death is heavily bound to fate in JoJo and most things happen for a reason in the series.

I actually have a different reason why Jonathan’s death makes me feel sad (which I didn’t feel until reading Part 3). It was because (in the story) his death is useless. Jonathan died to stop Dio, but Dio came back even stronger than before in Stardust Crusaders, so his death was essentially meaningless. HE DIED FOR NOTHING. Correct come if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you see many “pointless” deaths in anime, so for me at least, that cut deep.
@linusmota97125 жыл бұрын
Also the fact that Dio gave life to his body in a messed up way makes it feel disgusting. Which makes Jotaro Wrecking Dio much more satisfying for the viewer

He did not die for nothing. Jonathan spent his last few moments in-between choking in his own blood a) making sure Erina would survive b) blow up the boat so that he and Dio sink and perish... the second part did not entirely work due to Dio's luck BUT in the entirety of part 3 his desecration allowed the Joestars to access their stand abilities AND his body was resisting Dio, downgrading his physical prowess and vampire powers (hence Dio's reliance on The World ...). So no. Jonathan pretty much gave his children the right tools to wreck DIO, even implicitly...

I dont think a death being realistic necessarily equates to how well written it was. Abbachios death was phenomenally written because of the way it tied up his character arc, not because it was "instant" or "had no function". Narancias death on the other hand, much like Avdol (except arguably even worse), simply didn't have much of an impact on the reader due to how sudden (or realistic) it was. We don't get to properly process his death so by the end, it didn't really mean anything to us. If the actual characters dont have time to lament Narancias death due to the danger at hand, why should we? The reason the first two deaths were not good in Phantom Blood was simply because we werent invested in the characters, it is really as simple as that. Jonathans death on the other hand Id argue is still one of the greatest death scenes in the entire series right up there with the likes of Gyro and Abbachio.
@henrriguillen6 жыл бұрын
I'd have to disagree. I thought Narancia's death was done really well. I love how moments before it happens we get a monologue of what he plans to do when everything is over and we have some nice hope, then it happens and even us the readers are left confused. You do get to see the characters lament the death, especially Giorno noting that his body is an empty shell and all he can do is return his own soul into it, plus turning the body into flowers. The reason no one completely stops is cause they know Diavolo is on the move and letting their guard down will result in another loss. Narancia was one of my favorites so this scene really hit me.

Well, Narancia’s death does have two possible uses: to remove his powerful ability from the team’s arsenal, and to return Giorno to his original body. Though, I do like how his death was explained in a functional way within the story- because the enemy didn’t want him around due to how much of a nuisance he was to them- and yet basically served no real functionality from a large cause-and-effect standpoint. His death hit me hard. I remember reading how he wanted to go back to school and resume life after it would all be over. His optimism hurt for me because I already knew he was gonna die (I’m stupid so I got it spoiled), but it hurt even worse when I realized how sudden his death was. He didn’t get to pursue a real education like he wanted to. He didn’t get to celebrate victory with everyone else. *He didn’t even get to say goodbye.* I’ll continue with some other thoughts as a response to this.
@Satou_Rin5 жыл бұрын
Of course we gotta talk about Caesar’s death. It was powerful, noble, moving, while still being functional. Caesar was a big dummy-head for wanting to fight the Pillarmen head-on, and he was quite arrogant at times. He came to accept his death, at least enough to throw the baton to Joseph. It’s as if Araki is restating something that could be interpreted from William A Zeppeli’s death, but this time more effectively- **fate is cruel.** Seeing Lisa Lisa break down was the final blow that made me cave in. Maybe it’s because of how strong she is, always being a bit hard on the boys during training and setting an example for how powerful they can become. As Wamuu drove home, Caesar’s death was one of great honor. Though he pledged to be the one to end it all and avenge his forefathers, he came to terms with his own downfall. In his last moments, he threw away his usual pride and carved his legacy by becoming a support for his friend. His final pride was being a team player, an unfortunate sacrifice for a greater cause, and I think that’s beautiful.
@Satou_Rin5 жыл бұрын
To me, part 3’s deaths weren’t consistently good or bad. I’d say for the most part, they were powerful and very emotional. However, there are some flaws to them. Let’s start with Avdol. I felt that his return was kind of... not cliche, exactly. Sort of... unrealistic, even with the excuse that they wanted to trick the enemy into believing the Crusaders lost some power. Now, when he died for the final time, it was kind of sudden as well. But what happened was that he sacrificed himself for the second and final time. I believe Meti covered this in a video? Avdol, despite saying to never turn back, making a pact for everyone to focus on their own survival, couldn’t bring himself to do nothing as Polnareff faced certain death. He was a mentor even in his last moment, as Polnareff realized... uh... lessons. My brain is starting to fry. So strangely enough, Avdol’s death didn’t make me cry. However, Iggy’s... oh god. It hurt so badly. I don’t really see Iggy’s death as a plot device except in the fact that it drove his character home and melted our hearts... painfully, as if it were with acid. Polnareff had already lost Avdol. Now he loses someone else, but even worse, he began to realize how little he had cherished him at all. Iggy was shown to be rude, cold, selfish, and not very friendly to anyone at all. He and Polnareff had a conflicting relationship. So why, why did Iggy give himself up for the sake of someone else, especially Polnareff? Because deep down inside, he never hated him. The absolutely horrifying and perilous nature of Part 3’s journey truly shows itself here, when all that could’ve been is lost. Kakyoin... oh boy. This death was really painful. He didn’t get to say goodbye to his parents, and he left so much behind. But now that I think about it, he didn’t really say goodbye to the Crusaders. His final message was a crucial contribution to their last remaining members’ victory against DIO. The only thing that I’d really complain about is the fact that he survived for an unrealistically long amount of time, and conveniently just long enough to realize DIO’s ability and then act to warn the others. Ah yeah, and Joseph’s resurrection was uh... kind of BS. But hey, glad to have him back. If only EVERYONE ELSE COULD’VE BEEN SAVED!!! .°(ಗдಗ。)°.
