I think you need to speak to Erik Paulson, Student of JKD under Dan Inosanta, 6th degree BJJ black belt under Rigan machado and coach to Josh Barnett, Babalu, Brock Lesnar, Cub Swanson etc he moved to Hollywood to be a stuntman but ended up competing in MMA. If anyone has evolved JKD after the death of Bruce its Erik who has taken it forward.

No, if anyone has continued to refine JKD since Bruce, it’s Tommy Carruthers. He is the only one who follows the principles of JKD as laid out by Bruce Lee. Simplicity, directness and economy of motion. Nobody else follows JKD principles. JKD is not mixing arts, it is not mma. “The majority of people who practice Jeet Kune Do are mixed up, they think it should be a part of Wing Chun, a part of MMA, a part of Thai boxing, a part of wrestling, you know, a part of Wing Chun, which this is completely incorrect. You don't go from style to style, you go from distance to target or target to distance. Longest weapon to the nearest target and the most direct and efficient route possible, that is Jeet Kune Do.” - Tommy Carruthers

Yes 💯👍🏼❤️ Dan Inosanto is one of the biggest fraudsters in martial arts. His "as many arts as possible" (his words). Was designed to keep students coming in paying him money. Scammer.

@@spirithonorsjeetkunedo1877 50 years of misrepresentation and disinformation about what Bruce did. I know of her. I follow Tommy Carruthers. I think anything else JKD related is a waste of time. Honestly if it wasn’t for Tommy, Thomas Marx, I would have given up doing research into JKD a long time ago and just stuck with wing chun of gone back into karate. It said a lot there’s only really one guy in 50 years that even comes close to the attributes that Bruce had. Even Jesse Glover had nothing but praise for Tommy. All this “he’s copying Bruce” nonsense. Actually, he’s the only guy that actually trained like Bruce, hence why he can do what he did. If you don’t train like Bruce, or follow the principles, you’re never going to get close to his level or the best you can be.

It's strange to hear him talk about how he trains. He seems to understand the massive shortcomings of what he does but seems uninterested in fixing them. "I don't expect to be in the guard so I refuse to train it" huh? This reminds me of the kenpo guys saying they don't train grappling because they can't be taken down. You need to learn the whole thing and then take what is useful from it. Not make up your mind what you think is useful and only train those few things. Seems he didn't really fully understand what Bruce was saying.
@Polentaccio
@Polentaccio 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Why not be comfortable in every position and learn enough to get out wherever you are. Besides, in the guard if for a split second, you can squeeze the ribs, it certainly isn't comfortable if a person isn't used to it. Sounds to me like he might want to learn some catchwrestling. Emphasize the top position and getting off your back. Hold down positions turn into cranks and snaps of anything you can get.
@dragonballjiujitsu
@dragonballjiujitsu 2 жыл бұрын
@@Polentaccio Not only that but if he would just take the time to attain a blue belt level of proficiency in BJJ he would have at least 13-15 ways of getting back on top or getting away from the guard. It's like saying I want to know Muay Thai...but just for the right low kick, nothing else because that's all I think has value.

@@zenmachine50 They may not like being there but they all know how to fight and defend from there. You don't always get to decide where the fight takes place. If I'm in a real fight the last place I want to be is on my back but I've spent a good amount of time learning to when from there just in case. It just doesn't make sense to only practice the few parts of fighting you like and ignore the rest like it can't happen to you.

Love your stuff keep it up! He's a good example of where he doesn't quite understand grappling and talking about poke in the eyes grabbing the groin Guess what If you're a good grappler you you could do that in the ground better than a person does not a grapple. I can't tell you how many times I had a student take some me down and they tried to poke him in the eye grab the growing and then know what to do in the ground and they were completely devastated with elbows to the face kind of as a way of saying how dare you try to poke me in the eye. Quickly the opponent tapped and screamed to stop.

Why didn’t they actually just fight? Like Lee inosanto. How did they not in event modern mma in the 70’s? Seems so obvious
@ThepurposeofTime
@ThepurposeofTime 2 жыл бұрын
They did. But the only people doing it were the JKD guys. If they did a yearly JKD school tournament then that would have been UFC evolving during the mid to late 70s. Instead they just avoided eachother and took their insights into other arts establishments The Japanese were ahead because Yorinaga Nakamura took JKD and wrestling and made their own type of following that had WWE type of entertainment and professional wrestling. That's why the Japanese were ahead of the game. And probably why the Gracie Hunter is Japanese

@@ransakreject5221 🥴 no he was always a wrestler. He did bjj but he is known as an infamous wrestler. Just like yorinaga nakamura Matt Thornton still calls his gym a JKD gym because what they were teaching is sound philosophy, but it's not safe. You can use all of it within bjj and control someone better than you can with striking. But while bjj works well against striking, wrestling works very well against bjj and strikers that know wrestling counter wrestling, wrestlers that know bjj counter strikers and so on. there's a constant cycle.
@ransakreject5221
@ransakreject5221 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThepurposeofTime no. Matt does not. He put up a video saying he’s leaving jkd and no longer using jkd words cause they use dead ways of training. There is s video up wherein he explains this. I started jkd at a (PFS)Paul vunak affiliate as a boy in 1992. I am very aware of jkd and its evolution. Now they claim they were always mma. But in practical reality they made me spend most class time on trapping nonsense and stop kicks and strait blasts and much more nonsense. The catch wrestling they got from Japanese wrestlers taught by gotch and koga was sometimes taught but they rolled little, My teacher was a Rickson blue in 1993. Then when I cross trained with the Larry hartsell trained guys it was all dead practice. They’d be on all 4 and they’d have me do nonsense submissions that they learned from these japanese shoot fighters that had never been pressure tested. Find SAW the submission Bible or any early catch wrestling influenced Japanese submission based tape and there was some real stuff and some nonsense. Gotch was an Olympic wrestler but he was taught by catch guys that had never competed in catch. As far as I saw in the early 90’s what was being taught was pro wrestlers assuming all their moves came from catch when in fact catch actual competitions barely Made it inyo the 1920’s, It’s a lie that it was anything seen today. I still have Larry harstells books which he learned from Japanese wrestlers, I still have the early vhs shooto and pancrase tapes. There are many worked matches with lever takedowns and standing hammerlocks. Do not trust what they tell u. Look at it yourself. Old kenpo guys saying “we were the first mma cause kenpo combined other arts snd streetfighting for what works. We’ve always grappled” It’s the same bullshit lie. Watch how hapless the Japanese grapplers were in the mid 90’s. Watch ricksok in Japan. Watch Bart vale In WCC. Sakuraba is a legend and a great fighter cause he was a great actual wrestler, He got 4th in the collegiate nationals in all of Japan. There is SOME Truth to they grappled on jkd in the 80’s in LA. A small amount. If it was done much and really pressure tested we’d have had jkd dominate mma. They trained boxing wrestling and submissions. Why was the first one in the ufc giant roider Todd Medina? They’d be as good as the best fighters tiday if what u say is true. Do u have any idea what a GSP of 2010 would’ve done to Roybe? He’d have won all his fights. The first grappler that could strike well I saw was Don Frye. Militech and hume has some of each but in say 95 they’d have had no chance ve a rickson. Obviosuly by 2000 a pure bjj guy would get murdered at the top of mma cause guys were developing. But the first guy I saw that could punch kick and do submissions well was not a jkd guy. It was Marco ruas. Obviously matt knows more about this than anyone. But if grappling was done with striking and actual strikes on the ground then mma would’ve evolved to a high level in jkd. For sure jkd had a small part of this and deserves some credit. But if u honestly think that in 91 when Wallid, bustante & Sperry were beating eugenio tadeau & Denison maia in vale Tudo.. Well you’re just wrong. And if you agree they couldn’t. Then why couldn’t they? Why was grappling in jkd so primitive in 92 that I was taught when a man is bellying out I should grab his wrist in both hands and sit out to wrench his shoulder?
@ransakreject5221
@ransakreject5221 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThepurposeofTime I’ll now respond to the comment that u deleted. Yes I follow matt Thornton. He’s a brilliant man & I’m a huge fan. And he’s honest. And Tho I’m a longtime bjj blackbelt I assure u that I don’t drink the coolaid. I’m well aware of the bullshit in bjj history too. Like first of all that bjj came directly from Jiujitsu when it came from Maeda who was a strait judoka. Bjj should be called Brazilian judo. Secondly the Gracie’s crap about 100 years undefeated was never true. Also there’s the nova unio origin that didn’t come thru the Gracie’s. Just maeda. Then there’s the fact that there were many early clashes with luta livre (a direct decedent of catch wrestling) and the Gracie’s learned from catch as the catch guys learned from bjj. And the old tapes show bjj has evolved enormously from then. Frankly it’s changed dramatically in just the last few years. All sides give their own history. In challange matches in the early 1900s I’ve heard catch always lost and I’ve heard judo always lost to catch. Both are lies. But it is not a lie that kosen judo started dying out when judo became more about throws. And in all judo schools they started fat less newaza. I did judo in the 90’s and bjj has brought back much ground. It was very weak in the 90’s. At the same time catch evolved into worked matches and I’ve seen no evidence of real matches beyond a couple wrestler Vs boxer matches in decades after catch competition stopped. Bjj did not start ground fighting. But bjj kept it alive.
