I've always thought the whole show was about Jeff and Abed and how their friendship gave shape to everyone and everything else around them. It started with them and ended with them. They truly cared for and loved each other and ended up seeing the other as an equal and grew in similar ways. They took the best from each other and applied it to themselves, which resulted in them becoming better people for it. Abed took Jeff's charm and personality and became more approachable and outgoing. Jeff took Abed's insight and quirkiness and became open and wise. These qualities seeped into their friends and made them better people, too. Jeff and Abed were indeed the heart and soul of this show.

They honestly have one of the most realistic friendships in television history. It's rare that you meet people and immediately become best friends like what happens in so, so many sitcoms. Sure, it does happen, but it's super rare. Now meeting someone who you're forced to spend time with and someone you really don't like all that much, but over time you begin to embrace their quirks and what used to annoy you starts to endear you to them. Those friendships are ones that truly last. My best friend in the world is a guy I met in middle school. I was a center, he was a QB, so we were forced to spend a ton of alone time together over the 7th grade football season because, well, he was my QB so we spent hours a week practicing and a lot of that time was just he and I practicing snaps for different formations. I couldn't stand him at first because he seemed so arrogant and, to be completely honest, he was dating the girl I had a crush on. So I only saw him as my middle school romantic rival. They broke up about halfway through the season and he kinda leaned on me through the break up just out of necessity because he didn't have time to talk to many other people that much during football season. Once he started to really open up to me I started to realize something, he wasn't arrogant, he was insecure and masked that with machismo. By the 8th game of the season we were really becoming close. After the season ended I asked him if he wanted to come to my church and he started to get super involved in our youth group. By Summer he was truly my best friend and that Summer we had a church youth group trip to Colorado State that was a week long and he and I fought hard to be roommates. Two weeks before that we had a school trip to NYC/DC and he and, again, he and I fought hard to room together. By the end of that Summer he was spending like every other night at my house, usually with a few of the other guys too, but sometimes just us. All throughout high school we were inseparable. He went to Baylor and I went to Texas Tech, but we still talked every day since our friend group had a constant group chat. All of us either went to Tech, Baylor, of A&M so we'd all meet up in Dallas at least once a month and just get wrecked for a weekend while going to fraternity parties at TCU, UT Dallas, SMU, or wherever else in the DFW area. Long story short, in 7th grade we started as enemies who were forced to get along. Now, 15 years later, I'm the godfather to his first child and we make an effort to have an all guys vacation at least once every few months (even during the pandemic) and he's still my best friend to this day and that's not changing any time soon.

Having watched the show through several times now, I have come to think that Abed is the member of the (original) group who Jeff respects most. While he might occasionally roll his eyes at Abed's childish impulses or his sci-fi references, he rarely subjects him to the kind of outright ridicule that he does Britta or Pierce, he listens to him more seriously than he does Shirley, and he doesn't patronise him like he does Troy (and, in a different way, Annie). Part of this is probably affection and a recognition of Abed's genuine qualities. But, of course, Abed is also the only member of the group who ever displaced Jeff as the group's de facto leader: if so motivated, Abed is the most significant threat to his dominance, and both of them know that.

23:16 It’s the way Jeff genuinely takes the time to sit down and understand Abed. Most people just go “I don’t understand him” and leave it at that. But when Jeff doesn’t understand something he stops and asks and learns, thus he has one of the deepest bonds with Abed out of anyone. Even when Abed says “please don’t make a special episode about me” Jeff responds “I wouldn’t dream of it”, he talks in the way Abed understands, and communicates in the way Abed is comfortable with

fun fact: these two are the characters that harmon put most of himself into, which is why these two are the most interesting, they have the most depth, and it also makes their relationship especially interesting, knowing that their friendship is harmons relationship with himself

I love this Community compilation format! We need one of "Pierce Hawthorn being the father figure" cause his character was used a ton for the groups character development. Also, "Britta Perry actually being a good therapizer". She really does have her moments. Finally, and this one I really stand behind lol, "Frankie Dart tries to fit in". Frankie is such a dork when she gets out of her tightly wound character just to try to relate with the group, and it's hilarious. Sorry for the long post. I just love the format, and there is so much that you can do with it. Hope to see more of your content.

Unpopular opinion: i like jeff and abeds relationship more than troy & abed For example when jeff is mad at abed for ruining the surprise party he set up, abed recreates the party and surprises jeff with it to make up for it. But in a similar instance with troy (when abed gets in debt by hiring celebrity impersonators) abed doesn’t understand troys frustration with him and brushes it off instead of feeling for him and doesn’t try and make it up to troy
@kevinw7122 жыл бұрын
I would guess that what's a notable difference here in why this may be is that, in the case of the Dinner With Andre episode, he's self-aware enough to realize the obvious fact that he is very much directly at fault for the transgression. The whole thing was specifically about just himself and Jeff, and due to the waiter's untimely mistake, he gets blatantly called out for it in the moment. Plus he gets genuinely surprised (& likely regretful) at how seriously and introspective Jeff wound up taking the conversation. Whereas with the celebrity impersonator party, the overall activity is spread out amongst the entire group, and the detail that "ruins" the evening has nothing whatsoever to do with Abed at all. It was the conclusion of Jeff's own anxiety storyline that episode, him freaking out. Even though, for the bday party he still winds up happy cause he thinks it was somehow planned. So far as far as Abed could basically tell, mostly everyone there still had an okay enough time. Plus strictly speaking, there's not really a clear way to "make it up" to Troy. They were doing the kid's party because they were just fulfilling an obligation that was now complete. There was still a 'party' that never actually happened in the first place, so there was a bit more natural of an avenue for Abed to walk back his actions. He was genuinely worried about losing what he'd had with Jeff in season 2, thus the impetus for the dinner. He didn't really seem to be in that sort of a head space much towards Troy at that point in season 3. But please don't get me wrong, I think I'd agree with you that it could easily be argued that Jeff and Abed's relationship was indeed more deep and meaningful than his with Troy's. Of course, part of what helps really settle the foundation on that for good is what Abed goes thru in losing Troy completely for the last 1.5 seasons. We obviously can't know how things would be if Troy had stuck around.

@aylix21372 жыл бұрын
Troy, to me, always merely served as a positive reaction to Abed’s quirks that served as a write-in for the audience in how they felt about Abed’s character (who was arguably the most unique in the show), Jeff was always the true foil to Abed, but his characterization meant denying that part of himself and consistently shutting down Abed when he could. Troy even admits this when he admits in the lava episode that not even he truly ‘got/understood’ Abed. What Troy’s jealous nature may not have ever allowed him to see was that Jeff understood Abed more than anyone, as he was constantly fighting the part of himself that Abed represented.

At this point I see Jeff as Abed’s older brother in a way. The kind of brother who sort of brushes him off because he thinks he’s too cool to hang out with him. But really does love him and can’t help but dropping his “cool guy” act whenever they hang out because damnit if that’s not HIS little brother and no one understands either of them the way they understand each other
