Loved this video. I was an 80s kid and grew up with the original show, but in the early 2000s when it made a comeback, I got one of the dolls. Sadly, however they made it, it devolved into a greasy mess after a couple years and I had to toss it out. I kind of liked the second cg go at the designs, but that newest one is ugh. Still, it's really cool to see the changes over the decades.

I find it very interesting how children’s media has adapted over the years. The difference between what the 90s kids wanted to watch and what the 2020s kids wanted to watch are like night and day. I cant decide if it’s cool or scary. Great video as always! :D
@kellygreengables39362 жыл бұрын
What would you say the difference is? Because personally, I feel like the difference is largely what the media is putting out now (lots of remakes and making toy lines into shows) versus more original concepts or adaptations of the past. Kids are kind of forced to like whatever is there. But curious to see what others think.

Its not just what they watch but how they build entire characters and universes. Todays dolls/toy brand (fashion or otherwise) are so centered around current fashion looks. In the 70s/80s SSC were very Lolita in their design which takes much it’s inspiration from the 1890s-1910s with a dash of 1950s childrens clothing as well. Then they went on fantasy adventures. Companies back then didn’t think their dolls HAD to be reflective of current fashion or pop culture for children to be able to connect with and enjoy them. I’m not against revamping famous properties for new generations it just seems like no matter what property is being reimagined (everything from SSC to Superman) they seem to become more and more basic each time and loose that creative whimsy the characters once had and it’s disheartening to see. I grew up with the 2003 version (the best iteration of the characters) but I also LOVED the 80s specials for being a fantasy adventure. I just wish more companies would take a chance on creating more fantasy stories and characters again. I also just think that creators no longer trust their audience and make shows like the new SSC SOLELY based on whats popular and most prevalent in the market space. It’s not that kids don’t want to watch fantasy adventures, it’s just that they are given less and less opportunity to do so in children’s media and it’s sad.

I don't think talking about it like they're actually the ones choosing is the right way to put it, doubt they'd rather watch the new ones, it just seems so boring to me, seems like any other girls friend group cartoon I may not be exactly considered a child like a toddler or whatever, but I personally want something quirkier, not that

While I think this cutesey fantasy world is perfect for non natural hair colors, I dislike pink being more dominant than red in modern strawberry shortcakes appearance. What perplexes me is why these designers insist on giving the characters a "hip and trendy" makeover. The essence of these characters lies in their charming, big poofy dresses and cute bonnets, which have historically made them utterly adorable and hugely successful. Strawberry Shortcake was never intended to be a contemporary show; it was always envisioned as a fantasy adventure featuring charming, poofy-cute girls. The recent modern interpretations seem to have deviated from this original vision, moving the franchise away from what made it so beloved in the first place.

The cute 2D animation one on the Netflix was honestly REALLY good! I was so surprised. I grew up with the “straw-straw buh buh berry” (sorry I don’t remember the dates) one and the 3D animated one where the song goes “strawberrryyy short cake! She’s a berry bitty girl with berry big possibilities” so I was very well trapped in nostalgia and was nervous that it wouldn’t be good. But it was GREAT in my eyes. Despite it being targeted for a far younger audience the show was really fun and the characters were enjoyable, I loved the designs, and the songs were fun- though they didn’t always seem to have a particular point to them. While that seems to be the case with most musicals- songs usually are to emphasize something big happening and sometimes the songs felt random but they were fun! I liked the lessons they were teaching and I LOVED the writing. Writing for kids shows (very much targeted for kids not like Owl House or something) can often be bland and cringey but I laughed at a lot of the jokes and some of them were very well done and cleverly written- even some of the little details I knew kids wouldn’t always catch like when Strawberry was talking about cakes being dense and a little picture of Huckleberry popped up. I LOVED huckleberry’s design by the way. It was also Vincent Tong who was Kai in Ninjago and Flash Century in MLP, two shows I really love. Of course since it is a kid show that also didn’t seem to be aiming for a broader audience it had a simplistic story to it and they didn’t go particularly deep with things so don’t expect it to be the quality of kids shows that also leave room for older audiences to enjoy. I just kinda fell in love with it and it gave me mlp vibes, just a little less detailed Anyways, sorry this got so long. I just had been wanting to express how much I enjoyed this show for a bit lol

The newest one isn’t even “her” she’s so ugly looking now, Strawberry doesn’t dress in a beany in modern clothes, acting like and looking stupid like she belongs in TTG! what we’re they thinking, might as well call her a completely different generic character but that definitely isn’t “Strawberry” or her friends… Where’s her dress, Strawberry hat and curly red hair? Her face is ugly her entire goofy personality and expressions and especially that new outfit YUCK… They destroyed her just for the sake of money like most reboots… 😔

My mom grew up with Holly Hobby and she was born in the 50s. I remember both Holly Hobby and the original Strawberry Shortcake. Holly Hobby wasn't even the first girl with a bonnet that was popular. Bonnie Bonnet/Overalls Sam, and Sunbonnet Sue/Denim Dan have been popular in sewing, quilting and aplique etc since the early 1900s in the USA. They were even on US postcards briefly. And kids in a bonnet/hat in a similar style, were actually used as illustrations in Elementary school lesson books in England since the 1870s. My granny (born 1929-2018) remembered Sunbonnet Sue quilts etc. To this day you can get crafting stuff for embroidery and quilting etc of Sunbonnet Sue and Denim Dan, or Bonnie Bonnet and Overalls Sam. A little girl in a bonnet/ boy in a hat has been an icon of Americana for over 120 years. Strawberry Shortcake is old, older than most people think, but is unrecognizable today.

Those original designs look shockingly like something I'd see on Twitter today and retweet and follow--definitely the best ones. I didn't hate the look of the cgi show at the time (I'd catch little bits of this show before MLP:FiM) but it hasn't aged well. Still love the little hair movements tho. I remember being obsessed with the fact that the plastic on the VHS was pink and *also smelled like strawberries.* I mean even today I'm impressed - they scented the tape, that's wild.
