We know that about 3 years ago when George RR Martin was doing interviews for the promotion of his new book Fire and Blood..
He hinted at the idea that Aegon knew about the threat in the North and thats why he forged 7 Kingdoms into one with Fire and Blood! The show clarifies this for us. Aegon had a dream.
Prophetic dreams are not New to House Targaryen. Aegon's Prophecy isn't the only prophecy that is circulating during the dance which leads me to believe the two are connected. In this video I will break down what The Hammer Prophecy means and What Aegon's prophecy means and How they basically tell us when the walkers were created, when they came back and why! I will also talk about the implications this will have on House of the Dragon moving forward, especially Cregan Stark and Prince Jacaerys Velaryon!

When he said that "There must always be a Targaryen on the Iron Throne", that gave me "There must always be a Stark in Winterfel" vibes. Your theory backs up that parallel. You got my attention.

@dave Carroll yes! This explains a lot. They guard the secret. The white walkers will come from north of the wall so it makes sense to inform the lord of Winterfell as they are the first line of defense against them and the north will have major input in defending the realm against them as they hold the largest part of Westeros and will face them first. The last hero caused winter to fall at that precise location amending the first long night. House Stark fought and defeated the others before. The last hero was a Stark. 😳

If the Mad King had already told Rhaegar about the prophecy before their deaths, then it makes sense why Rhaegar's temperament changed from happy and signing in the streets to all sad and gloomy. And that could also be why he risked the entire kingdom to be with Lyanna Stark as she was the only maiden in the North to represent the "Ice" in the Song of Ice & Fire.

Ned was honorable he made it clear how he disagreed with Bobby killing an innocent child. Dani was like 13 In books. He literally refused to do a coup and take over from the Lannister’s and he did what he could do Cersai and kids weren’t killed for the truth, as in he gave them an out because they would have been executed. I don’t think Ned knew for some other reasons but just giving examples on him protecting kids. But, maybe one day we will know for sure . I’d love to know.

Gray, I always thought I was the only one that thought about the secrets like that. Targaryens must always sit the iron throne and there must always be a Stark in Winterfell,so that means that Ned's father had kept that part of the secret pact in the Starks teachings whether he knew the significance of it or not. As you said he's only a second son so he wouldn't be privy to the whole breakdown of why it must be that way. Thanks, Gray, for validating my thoughts on it. Now if we could have gotten a episode where Brann had a green dream about the secrets of the pact it would have cemented a lot of 'grey areas' in the Game of Thrones series and the prequel to boot. My opinion only

It makes sense why no one in GOT's time knew anything about this prophecy, since the last king and heir who knew about it were killed (Aerys and Rhaegar). The only living persons that might have known about this are Bloodraven and Maester Aemon, which explains why they ended up in the north. Aegon the Conqueror clearly had a prophetic dreams just as Daenys the Dreamer had about Valyria, but their prophetic dreams were not filled with details. Both did not know when their dream will come to pass and how exactly.

This prophecy could also add more depth to the fact that Aegon made the iron throne out of swords from those he conquered. He made a deliberately uncomfortable throne to remind his successors not to get too comfortable with their power. But using iron swords specifically is interesting because the Starks place an iron sword with every dead lord in their crypt.

I love so many of these theories! The parallel between the Children sacrificing their young and Stannis sacrificing Shireen *chef's kiss* Though I will say, I'm not sure how Aerys knowing and passing the secret to Rhaegar jives with Barristan telling Dany that Rhaegar changed after reading something in his scrolls and deciding he needed to be a warrior. If Aerys had told him, or known about TSOIAF at all, Rhaegar wouldn't have needed to read it elsewhere. I think instead, we're going see a dying out of the prophecy with Rhaenyra's death in HOTD. And it's only when Rhaegar finds out about it through his readings (or sees it in the dagger, though that could just be show-only) does the prophecy gain new life. But that's just my prediction! Great video as always Gray!

I agree with your deductions! I think the warning of the Long Night was passed down in the North since the Kings of Winter and Bran The Builder because “there must always be a Stark in Winterfell.” I think Aegon The Conqueror shared his dream and Torrhen Stark shared “the truth in the North” so they agreed to join forces. I think Torrhen knelt because he believed the dragons to be “Lightbringer.” I also believe that Ned, Benjen, and Lyanna always knew about the Others and The Long Night. There’s something about the way their decisions all come off as extremely layered.

It's interesting that the heir learns of the pact, and Stannis is on Dragonstone (the traditional seat of the heir) from the opening of the first book. When word of the Others comes to Stanis, he reacts quickly and in fashion which may suggest the "heir" knew of the pact of Ice and Fire. He knew his duty as king (or heir).

In the trailer it shows young Rhaenyra reading the words, “From my blood come the Prince that was Promised & his song will be the Song of Ice & Fire…” It’s obvious that she’s looking down at a fire as she reads these words. I think she’s reading these words of Aegon’s Prophecy from the blade of the Valerian steel (aka the catspaw)dagger after it’s been heated up in the flames. I hope that’s what we’ll see.

I had thought that the starks may have had their own secret to what would be needed to defeat the others when they returned, passed down from king to heir since the long night (the real thing the north remembers)... and that's why Torrhen would have knelt. There's no way the proud northerners would have knelt without fighting to the last man if they didn't know they needed an alliance with Fire.

I think you are right. It's also important to recall that the sequence was Mad King kills Rickard and his father...Rhaegar eloped with Lyanna having decided the prophecy applies to him and Lyanna, so whilst at ToJ he tells Lyanna the prophecy as he knew he was going to war with Robert in the Rebellion to preserve the Targaryens being on the throne part of it. He told her and made sure he left Arthur Dayne there to defend them. He didn't think he was going to die, but took precautions. He goes to battle and Robert kills him. We know Jon wasn't born yet as Ned left to look for Lyanna after the battle at the trident. And Jon was born when Ned was at the ToJ. The other Targaryens are wiped out (save Daeny and her brother, but they didn't know the prophecy). So the Walkers are kept in check so long as their is an existing Targaryen heir who has been told the prophecy. At Rhaegars death none yet knew. Only Lyanna knew. Which is what she then told Ned and Ned was to tell Jon, but couldn't. This was when the walkers slowly began their return to power and the return of winter began. What's also cool and interesting is that a Stark was the only other sanctioned ruler on the iron throne during the time of the Targaryen reign (albeit briefly..very very very briefly).

Ned did not know. He killed a night's watch deserter bc he says he saw white walkers. If he knew the prophecy, he would not have beheaded him. And, don't you think he would have done everything in his power to get Jon on the throne? Or Viserys? A Targ must sit the throne is a powerful statement if put into context. Ned would have taken it seriously. I like the thought but it just doesn't fully line up. No one knew.

@@sergioh336 you may be right. But I think the deserter could have been executed for reasons of duty alone. Jeor Mormont knew about the WWs. So did Maester Aemon. It's been a bit since I've seen episode 1, but I don't recall Ned expressing disbelief toward the deserter, just a grim near-remorse for having to kill him. I think that he broke his vow irrespective of why and that's why he had to be killed.

@@stryderja9570 yes, he was a deserter and the sentence was death. Ned could have also believed him which i believe was the case. But, if Ned knew of the prophecy, I believe he would acted differently in that situation. Ned n Jon are always compared. When Jon allowed the wildlings south, it went against the grain and ultimately cost him his life. But he did was right in the situation. Ned took Jon as his bastard, he did was right in the situation. Ned did the right thing in his eyes many times. I believe he would have done what was right, Including getting a Targ back on the throne at the expense of his BFF Bobby B. Which would quite certainly have cost him his life n possibly Jon's life. But it would have been the right thing to do especially within the context of the prophecy

The whole second hammer seems to have happened much earlier than rhaegars death, just because we know craster has been giving his son's away for his adult life 15ish years after rhaegars death and he's already grey hair going white and near the end of his life by then. If there was a second hammer/others event, then timeline wise Baelor and Maekar forming the Hammer and Anvil to crush Daemon makes more sense. Though, based on the descriptions of Summer reaching Bloodravens cave and Silverwing refusing to go over the wall being nearly identical, and Summers being based on feeling The Others, I'm under the impression that The Others have been around much longer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking this. After finding out this reveal I kept thinking that perhaps Robert killing Rhaegar and taking the throne triggered the return of the Others, but I kind of brushed it aside because I couldn't think of a logical in-world reason why this would have triggered the Other's return. You also mentioned another thing I was thinking as well as I've been thinking about the possibility that the Stark's knew Aegon's prophecy or had some prophecy of their own about the Other's, and how it was probably lost when Rickard and Brandon were killed. I have to now wonder if the narrative reason why the Winterfell library was burned was because it housed some of these secrets.

I mean, if Lord Rickard and Brandon knew the secret, it will be surprising that they rushed to KL to want Rhaegar to “come out and die”. There are a few Targaryen kings died before naming heirs, like Daeron I. It is likely the secret has been lost on the both sides some time earlier. However, i do love to believe the theory: house ice and fire are supposed to guard mankind together, but when they forget that and on each other’s throats, mankind is doomed.

I've always been sure that "The Pact of Ice and Fire" had everything to do with the song and the prophecy and that the Targaryens and the Starks were at the core of it, also because there are many parallels between them. So, yeah. I cannot wait to see Jace in Winterfell. I really hope Mushroom is right.

Fantastic video and a lot to think of. The pact of Ice and Fire from F&B also comes to mind. I don't think Ned knew however, and I also don't think he needs to for this to work. Looking forward to seeing more!

But the thing is Craster is mentioned to have atleast 50years, so he must be around 35 years old during Robert's Rebellion, but he must be breeding from very young age to having that many daughters and granddaughters, so what happened to the male babies he had before Robert's Rebellion if the White Walkers only returned after the Rebellion?

Awsome grey! I’ve been saying this Creagon and Jace bit for a week too! But I think Lyanna has told Ned. Promise me Ned is about Jon being the prince that was promised. And why did Ned send Benjen to the wall? Ned knew!

Ned didn’t send Benjen to the wall. Benjen chose to go and Ned let him. If Ned knew and Lyanna mad him promise something then why would he turn around and let Jon, this supposed price, go to the watch? He doesn’t make sense.

@@Youngthundercat67 I think Ned told Benjen the story and he either decided to go there or Ned sent him. “Promise me Rheanyra, promise me” George is not simply through this phrase around! This phrase is linked to the prophecy and TPTWP! Ned could still not believe in the prophecy… but Lyanna told her for sure
