There was a time when IGN's Vince Ingenito was one of mainstream gaming media's foremost fighting game experts, critics, and writers. Then, in late 2017, he lost it all almost as quickly as he earned it. And, no, you haven't heard from him since. That's because this is Vince's first public appearance since he was "MeToo'd," losing his job and his reputation in the process. What happened? Where has Vince been? And, perhaps most importantly, did Vince deserve his excommunication? Did the punishment fit the crime? That, as always, is for you to determine.

He had a substance abuse problem from what I heard. Probably got clean and came back. That weirdo Alyna or whatever from Australia got him fired from what I heard though. I think he had a crush on her because she flirted with him all the time on podcast and other videos and he took it too far and she reported him.

@@strife9878 Depending on what happened (there’s various rumours from alcoholism to hitting on Alannah), in his case I understand. Whether if he’s guilty or innocent, he probably doesn’t want to make himself a target. Years have passed (and if it was his fault, maybe he’s changed), and there’s no benefit to bringing it back up. Especially since he’s still in the industry so it’s not like he’s completely kicked out, he’s at The Escapist. He essentially restarted with a clean slate. I imagine he might not have replied to Colin, simply because a response is one step closer and something you can discuss. No response is a dead-end. Plus, after starting fresh, he probably doesn’t want to risk throwing that away by associating with Colin, simply because of the inane backlash Colin gets. It took a long time for Marty to get back into the industry (at least publicly). It’s unfortunate, but it’s also not our business at the end of the day. Sucks for fans and Colin, but I can certainly respect that Marty has rebuilt his reputation and handling it with care. 2 years is not nothing.

Vince's story isn't unlike many stories that people experience at work. You work at a place long enough, you develop relationships and friendships with people, sometimes with the opposite sex. Those lines can get crossed quite easily. One of my best friends is a female I met through work, and we often talked about taboo topics while at work. Luckily for me, both of us had the same understanding that we are friends, but at any time she could have done the same thing that Kallie did to Vince. And while Colin will tiptoe around the topic and Vince is too nice of a person to put any attention or pressure on Kallie, I won't. I do think IGN's HR department got it right. They must have evidence that the sort of comments Vince admitted to making were in some way a reciprocated thing. Kallie also responded to Colin's video about his own harassment he received online and outright online stalking that Colin endured with the following: "Nothing quite like watching a man complain about "harassment" that does not even come close to anything that women and PoC deal with just for existing, and then admitting that he didn't care about online abuse until it "happened" to him." If that doesn't tell you exactly everything you need to know about Kallie, then I don't know what else to say. She expects you to not question the "abuse" she received from Vince while also downplaying the abuse that Colin went through. She's a massive hypocrite. And I'm glad that Colin had Vince on his show because I do think how he was treated was massively unfair. For him to be on a list with Harvey fucking Weinstein is absolutely ridiculous. So here is what everyone should learn from Vince's story: If you are friends with a female coworker, make sure that your comments cannot be used against you later on if things go sour. This is difficult to keep in mind, especially when you get comfortable with someone. But treat those friendships with caution and never jeopardize your job with comments you make.

@KZ3fps
@KZ3fps 2 жыл бұрын
@@strikexforce it was known at the time, that's why IGN employees staged a walk-out. Here is what a Kotaku article said in 2017 (i hate using Kotaku but it had the most info): "What bothered Plagge the most, she said during a phone call, was what happened after she and her co-worker reported the incident to IGN’s human resources department in July 2016. Plagge said that she and the other woman were told to sit and work in a glass conference room-“a fishbowl”-while IGN decided what to do. Then, Plagge said, she was forced to sign a document saying that she had conducted herself inappropriately, without being told what she had done. The document, which Plagge shared with Kotaku, stated: “With regards to the investigation of harassment, evidence was presented to show a lack of professionalism in your part as well as others. Communication between you and Vince were both inappropriate, unprofessional, and violated our harassment policy.” What I find hilarious about this is that she is complaining about not knowing what she had done, the same exact thing Vince wanted to know. When it happens to her, it's a problem, but Vince apparently isn't allowed to know what he allegedly did. Once again, it's hypocrisy. And for the staff to stage a walk out because an investigation was done and both were found at fault is ridiculous. Why have an investigation if you're just going to disregard the results because they aren't what you like? It's lunacy. It should also be noted that Schreier didn't reach out to Vince for comment, which is honestly par for the course when you have an agenda.

I think your anger towards Kallie is misplaced. She should be able to share her story since the system failed her (getting fired for bringing up felt creeped on; and I think Vince would acknowledge that his emotional cheating must have crossed a line that he was not thinking about as creepy). The problem is the internet and people joining the court of public opinion too often. I think it's reasonable for somebody to share their story, and then not have a bunch of people grab pitchforks and go after the person, especially because that's not what she said in her story. Her thesis was not that "Vince is evil and he got away with it." It's that they both got reprimanded when she tried to go through the right channels to say that she felt uncomfortable. I don't think she ever would have went to the internet if IGN's HR handled this correctly.

@@Spiderfan1989 It doesn't matter. She shouldn't have dropped all of this on the internet. End of story. If they found something he would've been gone on the spot, and this from the company that fired person for plagiarism, something alot less serious. Somewhere along the line in these scenarios the concept of proportional response goes out the window, and thats how Vinces name is on the same list as Harvey Weinstein. When Vince said he was working as a barista I almost fucking cried. Even knowing that yes, this podcast has only really been about his side of the story and we should of course take everything he says with a grain of salt (even just for the fact that these memories are years old at this point), the fact that this talented writer and eloquent, well spoken voice in games media was forced out of the industry and has his talent completely wasted by serving people in a fucking coffee shop (which he even needed to convince the owners that he was not a terrible person) is awful and deeply depressing to me. The guy does not deserve that just because he made a few behavioural mistakes and said the wrong things to a co-worker in what are otherwise isolated incidents regarding his general character and behavior with women.

I generally agree with what you said. Metoo has been an extremely important movement with regards to harassments in the workplace, but from Vince's story (and like you said it's HIS side of the story) this seems to be an example of repercussions taken too far. If his story/perspective is true, it sounds like he got too friendly to someone that was not reciprocating. And really what young women wants a much older unattractive married man to make sexual jokes with her?? Like common sense really.... Though as you said he doesn't deserve to be lumped in with sexual offenders. That said women face creepy behavior everyday in the workplace and I'm glad people are finding their voice to speak up. In the past it was expected you had to put up with overly creepy co-workers to keep your job and the peace.

@@Danielle061011 Definitely agree with you as well. Looking back at his accuser's tweets, it really seems kind of shitty that she even dropped his name in the first place since her issue was more to do with HR's unsatisfactory conclusion of the investigation than anything. There was really no reason to bring up Vince's name at all since he supposedly corrected his behavior upon learning that he had been upsetting her and he continued working at the company with no further issues of misconduct. To behave inappropriately around someone a few times, find out it was upsetting them, correct yourself, then over a year later lose your career in the industry because she was still upset over how the company's HR treated her situation (something he had nothing to do with) is really unfair. The fact that everyone, including the media, seemingly took what she said and ran with it as the only worthwhile side of the story is sad as well and I think it's ultimately the bigger issue in regards to the repercussions Vince faced in the fallout of this whole thing. People are too quick at jumping to conclusions.

I have three things to say after watching this, watching/reading/listening to Colin for at least 13 years, and always respecting and appreciating Vince's work: 1. I'm glad Vince shared that last comment. I was about to go off, and that statement about not being a catalyst for that type of behavior was what stopped me. 2. At the same time - Everywhere Kallie goes, she leaves a trail of victims, with her at the center, and builds her entire persona around a very specific type of attitude, where it is only possible to empower people like her by taking down other people. She doesn't champion what she feels is right, she knocks down others to get what she feels is just. It's a very telling sign of a mental challenge, and has happened enough, that it shouldn't be too controversial to at least suggest that MAYBE a bit more of the blame rests with her than the people she stepped on along the way. 3. That said, Vince - Dude. Make a channel. Start a podcast. Ask Colin for help if you need to. If you want to re-enter the industry in a specific way, do it yourself. Make the content and lead the conversation. People will listen. We will listen. You can curb the hate speech or any vitriol you don't want surrounding your name if you're driving the tone. If you make games content and occasionally say "I see those comments, and I will not respond, and I don't want your views", it'll go away. Hell, you can just say "If you want to know my stance on the past, watch my interview with Colin". You can do it, and you should do it. Anyone can bounce back, and plenty of people who shouldn't have, easily have done so. There's no reason you can't be the star of your second act.

Maybe she did actually feel that way about the things that Vince said and did, regardless of how innocuous they seem to be from Vince's point of view. Which isn't the same thing as him agreeing his should be on a list with Weinstein. He says that IGN didn't provide the actions and supports that would have allowed her to feel comfortable and heard. Which is very different from saying he was definitely in the wrong. He's still a bit uncertain about being in the wrong as there is an important piece missing from the story, whether there was one event that sparked her discomfort or whether it was many low-level discomforts over their entire relationship that Kallie didn't know how to deal with and didn't call him on until it became overwhelming. I think he's a thoughtful, very empathetic guy who has been deeply affected by these events and they have made him question aspects of his personality and relationships with women, things which have probably taken time to deal with. While there probably would have been a point that many others, in a similar situation, would have said "f--- this" and gone on the offensive, this doesn't seem to be the kind of person Vince is. He's completely unwilling to hurt people he cares about. He hasn't been able to work in the industry but has maintained a job and contributed financially to his family in a way that allowed him to hold onto his morals and beliefs. He's putting his support of women in general ahead of himself. Honestly I feel there's something noble about his actions. Frustrating and sad, but also noble.

Personally, I think it's criminal that someone can just make accusations in an online environment, without evidence, proper process or even backing from the company (IGN who found both to be at fault, telling me there was back and forth from both). This to me boils down to a personal relationship gone wrong. The guys life should not have been ruined. The way the woke cult unperson's people like this is pure evil, and I appreciate Colin so much for treating people like humans instead of ideas. The social dynamics on the left is "you stab my back, I stab yours". You go off script to their ideology and its over, no more jobs, no more of their friendships, is any relationship they have actual real bonding between humans? Or is everyone just one big collective, so therefore, all individuals are disposable. Its infuriates me how fast they'll drop their own friends for political power, or the approval of others, and you can tell Vince is still caught in the terror of that progressivism, even when his life has been ruined the way it has. The virtue signaling and white knighting for women, regardless of evidence, is such an unhinged hysteria on their side, and its part of the collectivist thinking, particularly in femenism, where men like Vince become like the acceptable collateral damage in the war agains't the patriarchy. Like any man should bare punishment for the actions of other bad men, past and present, and Vince seems to think that yeah, ok, I'll take one for the team. I'd say male femenists get what they ask for but I dont feel that at all, I just feel sad, it sad men cant defend themselves. A women should not be able to ruin your life like this over discomfort and misunderstandings. We should be able to unite on things we choose, like our hobby for gaming, and have some grace for each other. Its just a sad world we live in, but I'm thankful Last Stand will go against this insane cult and treat people like fucking humans again. I do feel for Vince, the part when he was asked if it was unjustified was heartbreaking. I have to ask this of him though as he qualified himself as a "feminist", and seems to be of similar age to me, not these new generation. I would consider myself a second wave feminist, which to me is equality and treating women the same as men(not saying they are the same but not giving biased treatment to either). He is bending over backwards to be courteous, even after everything, about how she was feeling, how his actions/words made her feel. Now I can understand the base level goals of the MeToo movement, I can understand that women's opinions/feelings have been somewhat sidelined in the past and especially in the work place. But like many things in the past 10 years in trying to balance things better for everyone, in the fervor to get it done quick and fast the scale gets slammed down the other way. For some it's unintentional, for many there is a sense of vindictiveness; "it's their time to pay", despite many of those paying the price not being the ones who committed the wrongs. Because here is a question, if people's personal feelings about things said and done are paramount, what about Vince's?... He had what he thought was a close personal friendship with her exposed as BS, because if they were real friends she would have mentioned to him right away if he did something she wasn't comfortable with. He's being left both confused by what he did and wrought with guilt feeling he hurt someone, she has (it certainly seems like at least) zero care for what she did to him, and his pain is literal financial and reputational ruin. Does his pain and hurt mean nothing? Because he's a man? That isn't feminism, that's misandry, and that is probably what she learned in her "gender studies". My honest take on this. They were friends that discussed things that friends discuss and some of it was not work appropriate. She's a young attractive woman in the games industry and there is a lot of attention both wanted and unwanted that comes with that, I'm sure Chobot and others have their stories. My guess is this 2016 E3 was maybe her first one and a combination of all the male gazes and comments combined with the pressure of the workload she had as an editor broke her. She got grossed out by the situation to the point she started reevaluating her relationship with Vince, were these friendly discussions they'd been having actually him trying to groom her? (And I'll say this, as a heterosexual man there was probably at least a small part of Vince, even maybe purely subconscious that was hoping the relationship would go that way). Also maybe she felt some pressure to have a reason why E3 was being too much for her and didn't want to seem weak professionally so this was a great excuse to cover for that. As far as her tweeting about it after, probably less a personal attack at Vince but more her blowing off steam about how IGN handled it(which seemed like the correct way to handle it IMO). But here's the thing, ladies, if you want to be treated as equals you need to step up you personal responsibility on this stuff. If people are overstepping your personal boundaries, let them know. And let them know directly, not this "well I did this and they should have assumed what I meant". Men don't have a lifetime of reading between the lines of caddy comments and false compliments you dish at each other. If then the person refuses to back off you escalate it. Running to HR like running to your daddy when something is wrong will perpetuate the stereotype that you are basically children and not professional equals. And if you're a real feminist you don't want that. EDIT: Just listened to the last 15 min after reading this. Vince if you're reading this. You are not betraying feminism to wrestle with the logical contradiction of: BelieveAllWomen + Woman accuses you of being a sexual predator + You're not a sexual predator = Does not compute Believe All Women makes no sense, especially to women if you listen to them talk about each other. And even if a woman is being honest with themselves they can be wrong or at least not presumptively right, that's how personal opinion works. It is low key sexism to assume that women can't handle having their opinions challenged. You need to respectively hear anyone out on their feelings on something but you also need to have enough respect to challenge them when you feel they are wrong or there may be a different "truth". The answer to wife beating is not encouraging women to beat up their husbands, this is the fallacy in most modern "progressive" thought....

I think this is about how this guy's life was torpedoed by culture. That a woman was totally not treated right by a system that failed her, and the mob wanted somebody to pay. The only suspicion remaining is that there are other women, at least one, that had an issue with this guy, but Vince acknowledges that and we can never know the full truth. He does own that he had things to work on about his relationship with women and how he thinks of himself in relating to women, because if it can happen with more than one person, he must have had issues with how he connects with others. Vince, You came across as genuine. I would urge you, however, to think deeply about this situation and what in culture allowed it to occur. You went out of your way to run defense but the fact of the matter is that you were (by your own and any reasonable listener's understanding) treated unfairly. Unflattering parts of feminism are categorically to blame for that. Kallie went out of her way to not resolve things with you reasonably or amicably. Either you are not telling the truth or there is some level of maliciousness in her actions. If you sincerely believe it is not the former, I suggest you stop covering for her and that movement and letting your life be defined by what is likely a throwaway moment for her. She has treated you unjustly. I would urge you to not dwell on that fact but to internalize it and consider it when advocating for certain elements of feminism that support these outcomes in the future. Men and women are equal as humans and should be treated as such; were you treated equally here? Just some food for thought if you ever end up reading this. Hopefully this interview will prompt her to spill the beans on what vile act you committed which caused this whole thing so that we all have the fullest picture possible. Any man that becomes friends with a woman in her mid-20s over their mutual love of feminism is either a creep or just plain stupid. Something about Vince's story tells me his wife likely warned him about immature girls like Kallie. It's hard to feel bad for him.

Another really great interview. I didn't know much about the situation but it does seem a disservice was done, even though it seems as if Vince himself would be hard pressed to call it such. Him being a "self described feminist" probably made it easier for social media to bully him around because he felt it would be wrong to speak out against them and potentially do more "harm" to the victim.

Chills went up my spine several times throughout this interview because I had something very similar to me happen when I was working at a well-known religious television network. It happened years ago but I still have nightmares about what happened. Similar to Vince, I had to find out weeks later from former co-workers why I got fired. I wasn’t shown proof or told why. They later promised me that they will show me via their lawyers but that was a lie and never did. I still don’t have closure on the most traumatic time of my life.

1:26:00 This right here is what really is the problem. Just because you view yourself as “non-threatening” or “a safe guy” doesn’t mean your actions can’t still be perceived/felt as unwanted, inappropriate, sleazy, etc. If a someone doesn’t like how you are acting towards them, that’s it. This girl sounds like she kinda sucks, tbh. But at the same time, I be willing to bet money there were moments long before that “E3 moment” that indicated she didn’t like how Vince was acting towards her. Now does what happened to him feel justified? Hell no. But it’s you’ve got to be aware.

I want to be in favor of Vince's defense... but MAN does he make that difficult. "I'm a self-described feminist progressive, so I felt like any attempt to offer my side of the story was giving ammunition to the people I fought hard against, who just wanted to discount women's stories." You were dragged through the mud over a couple overly-flirtatious moments, and got put on the list next to genuinely heinous people. You ARE the story that needed to be discounted because it was a nothingburger that had already been sorted out at a personal and professional level by discussions, HR, and mutually deciding it was best to not work together with the woman in question. There's room for a MeToo movement to happen in a sane world. Call out the serial abusers in every industry. But when you drag social awkwardness, a couple misreads of romantic cues, and issues that were determined to be the "fault" of BOTH parties into that mix, with the accused refusing to defend himself, that's how you end up with the people who just discount ALL of the stories. "Living by your principles" and not defending yourself meant she got away with slandering you in the worst possible way and making you lose your entire career over a small personal matter. "[I loved my job and I miss it and want to get back into it, but] if I ever come back, if I ever have the opportunity to in any way, I would want for there to be a way for that coming back to be positive for gender relations, to be positive for feminism, to be positive for the progressive movement in the games industry." His obsession with wanting his "side" to be right is what cost him everything, not his accuser, nor the people who were looking for the ammo to fire back. Vince, don't lick the boots of the people who knocked you down and kicked mud in your face. You don't have to be radicalized to realize that the very movement you're defending right now has cost you and countless others their entire lives and livelihoods. Push for reform, push for abusers and genuinely awful people to be removed. But you know firsthand now that surely not everyone who has been accused is guilty. If you want your life back, take it back. But if you won't understand that you're supporting the system that did this to you, then you can't ever take it back. Just two cents from some guy on the Internet that you will probably consider a radical or misogynist.
