Alexander II, was the most liberal of the tzars, he freed the serfs in 1861. He had amazing physical strength, after a bomb destroyed the royal train car he braced the roof with his back to allow his family to escape. Although he was horribly disfigured in this final bombing, he lived long enough to die in his own bed surrounded by his family.

@@JohnP538 Two different Tsars. Alexander iii was the "bear of a man" (railway incident) He was the son of Alexander ii. *Alexander iii was the guy who insisted on autocracy* *after his father's death.* All Alexander iii did was to weld a lid to a boiling pot. The "pot" exploded during his son's (Nicholas ii) reign (a weak man who refused to rexamine autocracy)

The irony is that Alexander II was trying to change Russia. Due to his assassination the following two Tsars were more authoritarian and backward thinking than ever. They believed that this is what comes of trying to please the people. Had it not happened Russia may be a very different place today and tens of thousands of people may not have died.

Here are some thoughts and considerations you should give before you become a revolutionary: 1. What system of government are you replacing by what system of terror? The revolutionaries usually are simply interested in simply taking power. They are not interested in the average working man or woman. Revolution is invariably followed by a reign of terror, far harsher than the system it replaced. 2. Can you live with the fact that you have murdered many innocent people to get where you are? Those who live by the sword generally die by the sword. Would you be happy to stand before your Creator and say, "Yes Jesus, I was a mass murderer whilst I was on this earth." 3. Can you control the counter-revolutionaries, also eager to snatch power? It looks like you need to engage in more killing. 4. Have you plans for feeding the people, creating jobs, education and health? Are they tried and tested or just mere thoughts. 5. Can you rein in the power of the Armed Forces? 6. Have you experience of managing government? How about trying to change the existing system peaceably from within? "Twist" the right arms and maybe, maybe there will be people at the top who will influence and correct some of the wrongs in the existing system. In this present case, it might involve writing to and petitioning the Emperor and the Empress, in a respectful way of course.

You’re acting as if the Russian people had some sort of Democratic recourse. I assure you they did not. This never provoked a revolution anyway. The Anarchists couldn’t really be taken seriously because they seemed only interested in killing aristocrats and industrialists. When the real revolution came years later it was during the worst war in history up until that point, during a famine, and followed immediately by a bloody civil war.

Alexander II was a great tsar. He carrtied out reforms, such as absolishing serfdom in Russia. nad he gave Finalnd an own parliament, and more partial independence. God bless the Romanov family. quite many of the monarchist Russians se Maria Vladimirovna Romanov as the head of the family. She got a little grandson previous year, Alexander. I´d wish for him to one day be Alexander (Aleksej) IV, but not an autocrate, but the symbolic head of state in a new democratic Russia, with a constitution simialr to the British, or the one for example in Denmark or my country Sweden.
