Nicholas figures in an urban legend about the railroad from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. When it was planned in 1842, he supposedly demanded the shortest path be used despite major obstacles in the way. The story says he used a ruler to draw the straight line itself. However the false story became popular in Russia and Britain as an explanation of how badly the country was governed. By the 1870s, however, Russians were telling a different version, claiming the tsar was wise to overcome local interests that wanted the railway diverted this way and that. Actually what happened was that the road was laid out by engineers and he endorsed their advice to build in a straight line.

The ultimate irony is that the People's Will expected things to be better for the Russian people after Alexander II died, more rights and freedoms for the people, Russian autocracy either softened, reformed or abolished. But the complete opposite happened Alexander III strengthened the autocracy even more He threw liberal reforms and the possible constitutional monarchy idea in the oven Censorship and repression became stronger And with all that grew the ideas and desire for revolution even more So in the end the People's Will succeeded. The results just came decades later and some of them didn't live to see it. And if they were alive during the Revolution, they would have died after Stalin took over everything

There have been many damning verdicts on Nicholas's rule and legacy. At the end of his life, one of his most devoted civil servants, A.V. Nikitenko, opined, "The main failing of the reign of Nicholas Pavlovich was that it was all a mistake." However, from time to time, efforts are made to revive Nicholas's reputation. Historian Barbara Jelavich points to many failures, including the "catastrophic state of Russian finances," the badly equipped army, the inadequate transportation system, and a bureaucracy "which was characterized by graft, corruption, and inefficiency.

Nicholas died on 2 March 1855, during the Crimean War. He caught a chill and refused medical treatment and died of pneumonia, although there were rumors he committed suicide. Russia fought a successful war against the Ottomans in 1828-29, but it did little to increase its power in Europe. Only a small Greek state became independent in the Balkans, with limited Russian influence.Austria offered the Ottomans diplomatic support, and Prussia remained neutral, thus leaving Russia without any allies on the continent.

His big blue eyes are piercing and deep set which I've always thought attractive. His nose, hands and lips are beautiful , as well. Question, what do you think of the series as a whole?? I absolutely enjoyed it and have watched it several times. Very informative. Wish I had this when I was in school. History classes were NEVER this entertaining. Again, give me your opinion. Cheers from Ohio!!

Hi! Skin colour is not a problem at all. There's never been racism in our multinational country. I've seen a lot of black American tourists in Moscow and St. Petersburg, so don't worry! Just contact the travel agency :) People may glance at you with curiosity, because there are not many African Americans in Russia (less than 0.5%), but it would be more like: “Oh, you're black, that's cool! May I take photo with you?” - without any intention to offend. Most of Russians think black people are cool and easy-going, so you have all chances to become popular, especially among our girls. We're also used to think that no one in the world cares about our history and culture nowadays, or people in the West don't like us, to put it mildly, because of anti-russian propaganda. That's why we're always glad to welcome foreigners who are interested in our country and who not consider us as a bunch of ignorant vandals :D (sorry for my English if it's terrible)

😂😂😂 hey, I am Russian, living in Moscow. This summer me and my husband went to st.Petersburg as tourists. After the airport we took a bus to the city. Then we took a taxi to get to our hotel, and guess what? The taxi driver was black! Well that was surprising, in a good way :) Noone would even think of harming a tourist. And our police treats the tourists better than russians. So don’t be fooled by stereotypes come to Russia! :)

Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's brother was executed after Tzar Alexander was murdered.

Anyone would be happy to avenge their brother. Therefore in the end, Lenin destroyed the royal family. I wonder if Alexander III had pardoned Lenin's brother, would Lenin have become a revolutionary?

He was executed after preparing an assassination attempt on Alexander III. Alexander III died a natural death.

Other than killing woman and children at the beginning of his reign, Nicholas kicked butt. Very smart building the track slightly larger. Even down to handing the reins to his son. Interesting tho - it seems if the leaders had success in world affairs, they suffered at home, and vice versa. Ty for this series!

Sound like a low IQ L05ER. He didn’t kill women and children on purpose. They died during the fighting in which he was defending himself.

They talked about his friendly treatment of Gogol and Pushkin but forgot to mention that it was Nicholas I who exiled Dostoevsky to Siberia.
