My family left Compton in around 1965 for the unincorporated town of Dominguez. Which was later called what we know as the city of carson. In that time the city had one or two stop signals and cow pastors. The distance between Compton and the unincorporated city of then Dominguez was wide. Friends and relatives in Los Angeles thought we lived in the country. After the watts riots white flight took place, and then more minorities moved into the city of Carson. I believe the sheriffs treated the people of carson with more respect because the area was considered more affluent. But as a black person even at that time we were questioned...asked if we lived in this neighborhood. The homes back then were not built for blacks or others. Only for whites at that time. Because of the various covenants. I believe my parents purchased their home back then for under 30k and now those very same homes are going for several hundred thousand dollars.
