It's wild how so many popular and significant films and albums from the 90s exist in an almost "vacuum"? I think in many ways this was the last decade when there was Black culture that existed in this way. When there was music/art/film that didn't "crossover" and Black artists that did. It's still funny tho as someone who grew up in the 90s to see something that was very popular like 'Jason's Lyric' be kind of unknown to non Black folks lol.

as a white girl born in the late 2000s, i can confirm. i had absolutely no idea who d’angelo was before clicking on this… maybe it’s bc i’m just kinda getting into hip hop and rnb (my parents are very much rock and roll only ppl, and the ppl at school really only listen to super new stuff). still interested to watch since i love these videos… didn’t expect to sit through a 2 hour video abt prince, an artist i only know from his top 5 most popular songs.

Also , fun fact, Chicken Grease is kinda of a Prince tribute as well, considering the term chicken grease comes from Prince and how he would call Major 9th chords "adding chicken grease" to a chord and the song is littered with major 9th chords , everyone should check out the 33 1/3 book for Voodoo especially if you're a super fan like me

Hey friend , thanks for covering one of my biggest influences ever. just chiming in for folks who are curious, Jasons Lyric was relatively big in the black community. now that im older im realizing it was ONLY big in the black community, Idk if it got an actual movie release, but it was heavilyyyyy played on BET growing. I bet they still play that movie as much as they did then. As an older cinephile I'll admit the movie wasn't thattttt great from a writing prespective, but I think it opened the door for movies like Moonlight to explore black masculinity. but you're right Black Men United shoulda been way bigger then what it was, but I think it only tells us something about how the entertainment industry valued black men at that time. I wonder how the song and the movie would be received today... really interesting case study ... also kinda wild that his FIRST credit was writing for the biggest names in soul/r&b

This video manages to fill in the neo-soul shaped hole in the 90s episode of Defined The Decade™©®. Considering that album's impact on popular R&B for nearly a decade, I was genuinely surprised it didn't make it. Imagine telling anyone with melanin darker than a Dunkin Donuts latte in the late 90s that Brown Sugar would be seen as less influential than Green Day's Dookie. You'd see some hands thrown.

Great video! And if anyone is interested in discovering more neo soul music, check out Lewis Taylor's first album released in 1996. Two little fun facts: Aaliyah declared herself a fan of his after listening "Bittersweeet", the album's main single. Also, D'Angelo contacted Lewis Taylor to work on a follow up to "Brown Sugar" in NY. Taylor said that he was left astray by him and went back home disappointed.

highly recommend looking into the soulquarians era, digging the greats has great video about it. more than just voodoo, mamas gun, and like water for chocolate came out of that era, things fall apart by the roots too. their process of making those albums is amazing, their dedication to the music and process of creating songs after looking through record shops for old records and listening to them, it makes sense how so many of these albums are in another level side note: questloves drumming style is super important to these albums too

Great D'Angelo vid! Loved it! I have to see the Prince one next, seeing as I always adored him (no pun intended). To touch on what you mentioned about "Jason's Lyric," as some others previously commented, it's a classic film in the black community. It was released back in 1994, when I was 13 (I know I'm telling my age right now, but I don't care). The movie itself is about two brothers that grow up in the Third Ward of Houston, TX. They both suffer trauma in their lives, but one grows up to rise above the drama and finds love, whereas the other one succumbs to his PTSD and circumstances. I've seen it a million times, and I still revisit it to this day. Check it out whenever you have the chance. I also remember when the song "You Will Know" was released. The song featured Tevin Campbell, Boyz II Men (who were at the height of their careers by this time), Gerald Levert, and Raphael Saadiq, just to name a few, so the track was a very big deal in the black community. It got a ton of radio airplay, and the video was constantly on BET. Not only that, I remember friends of mine taking the melody and making up their own lyrics for events, or just to mess around. However, I never realized that D'Angelo was a part of the Black Men United group (that's what the supergroup called themselves), so I still learned something new about the song! Again, this was a great vid. Outstanding work. ❤

Thank you SO much for posting today, genuinely. I've been on vacation the past few days and while it's been great, I was missing home extra hard today. This was the serotonin boost I needed. I don't know a ton about D'Angelo but How Does It Feel is one of my new favorite songs, so this was such a nice surprise. And yes, I downloaded the playlist for my flight home. Thank you!!!

Thanks for this respectful treatise. I’m happy that it was done. No offense sir, but kinda sad that it was you who had to do it. I haven’t listened to D’Angelo since I bought that cd in 1995. It looks like it’s time for a revisit to his other works. I have heard other KZbinrs mention your channel so going in now for a closer inspection. Thank you again.👍🏾

One record that I think you should have included is the Live at Stockholm bootleg. There's not much fuss made about it but it's on streaming services, and its a pretty amazing document of his live show at his peak. Definitely better than Live at the Jazz Cafe

Great job bro. I’m a long time D’Angelo fan and you really did this justice.

I know this won’t be as marketable as some other artists, but I’d love to see a deep discogs dive on some of the prolific interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Someone like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, or Nat “King” Cole would be awesome.

I am so glad I found your channel. Our music tastes overlap by like 85-90% (re: your take on Songs About Jane...I just wanna talk...), and your analysis is so thoughtful, knowledgable, and smart while still being accessible. I desperately need a DDD on Spoon! Keep up the amazing work!
