Time to watch and react to The Exorcism of Emily Rose movie. As an ex Catholic Priest, I had a lot of ideas and thoughts race through my head as I revisted this film.
We talk about my beliefs now and then, obsession with darkness and the devil, Christian compassion (or lack thereof) and how these tales affect us and move us... to name just a few.
Let me know what you think!! I would love to read your thoughts and impressions of this and other movies on exorcisms.
I appreciate any support to the channel:

I've been a bit obsessed with possession for as long as I can recall. My biological father believed I was possessed since I was very little. About two years before this movie came out my bio-father and some of his evangelical extremist friends performed an exorcism on me. The outcome? It "didn't work" causing him to believe that I'm not possessed, but rather, I am a demon. This movie quickly became one of my favorites. When it came out I had already been diagnosed with trauma disorders, and I felt like I could have had the outcome of Anneliese Michel/Emily Rose if I didn't have my mom looking out for me. On a somewhat different note... I once had a therapist tell me about his experiences being present for Catholic exorcisms. He said he quickly diagnosed almost all of the individuals with conversion disorder, and could often point to the trauma that caused it.

Was he the therapist who saw the people prior to the exorcism, or he was present during? From what I understand, people have to be vetted by a psychiatrist for mental illness before an exorcism, and if they're diagnosed with something the exorcist won't do it because there's nothing to exorcise. That might just be the way it's SUPPOSED to be done though. There's always cases (or dioceses) where proper procedure is ignored.

I'm sorry that you experienced this. I'm absolutely certain that you were going through something that is completely explainable, but religion always has a way to blur the lines between reality and fiction. I'm glad you're doing okay now. This movie is one of my favorites because it covers the reality that there ARE other explanations for things that religious people will completely dismiss and chalk it all up to their favorite fables. It's a sad but true reality.

But being religious means you have faith and value, and also follow a reason to believe, Now I won't go on a rant about why I believe in God, but you clearly have no proof to believe in witchcraft, just selfishness.... If this is freedom, then, okay! Peodphiles, murderers, serial killers, kidnappers, rapists, you guys be free! :D I hope you understand how absolutely demented this sounds.

Here are my thoughts on what you said about surrendering to God. Giving a situation to God simply means that you're trusting God to take care of it in His timing no matter how long it takes. We still need to get up, eat, take showers, and do what we need to do every day no matter what trials we are facing. The idea of surrender is saying to God, "I can't control the fact that this situation is happening, so I am giving it to You to fix". For instance, a friend of mine recently died a painful death from medical conditions and it was one medical condition after another until it got to the point where her body couldn't take it. I'm still grieving her loss as my sister in Christ and I can't do anything to bring her back to life. The only thing that I can do is go to therapy and allow God to work in this situation in His timing. Recovering from grief takes time and I have to trust that God will help me with the process.

Thank you for your comment! I believe I was speaking of a tendency of excess with regards to that idea. To not take action and feel a certain comfort is being the victim of your circumstances. It’s easy to “give it all to God” when there is actually nothing for you to do, but in many situations there are many options. That’s what I was referring to: the romanticism of being a “suffering soul.”
@nina-raedelong158
@nina-raedelong158 2 жыл бұрын
@@iamjudasproject I think I get what you mean. For instance, if someone is struggling with medical conditions and decides not to go to the doctor? Of course a person who is suffering has the option to go to the doctor, but for some reason decides to suffer so that God will fix it if we have faith. If that's what you're talking about, my argument to people would be 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 and Romans 12:1 where it's clear that God wants people to treat their physical bodies like God's temple and offer it as a living sacrifice. I interpret that as saying that when the body is suffering medical conditions, people are responsible to go to doctors for medical care.

@@iamjudasproject Offering Oneself as Victim. It would seem that it is impossible to go further in love of the Cross than to prefer sorrow to pleasure. Nevertheless, there is still another more perfect degree in the love of suffering: the act of offering oneself as a victim of expiation for the sins of the world. At the very outset, we must insist that this sublime act is completely above the ordinary way of grace. It would be a terrible presumption for a beginner or an imperfectly purified soul to place itself in this state. "To be called a victim is easy and it pleases self-love, but truly to be a victim demands a purity, a detachment from creatures, and a heroic abandonment to all kinds of suffering, to humiliation, to ineffable obscurity, that I would consider it either foolish or miraculous if one who is at the beginning of the spiritual life should attempt to do that which the divine Master did not do except by degrees." The theological basis of offering oneself as a victim of expiation for the salvation of souls or for any other supernatural motive such as reparation for the glory of God, liberating the souls in purgatory, attracting the divine mercy to the Church, the priesthood, one's country, or a particular soul, is the supernatural solidarity established by God among the members of the Mystical Body of Christ, whether actual or potential. Presupposing the solidarity in Christ that is common to all Christians, God selects certain holy souls, and particularly those who have offered themselves knowingly for this work, so that by their merits and sacrifices they may contribute to the application of the merits of the redemption by Christ. A typical example of this can be found in St. Catherine of Siena, whose most ardent desire was to give her life for the Church. "The only cause of my death," said the saint, "is my zeal for the Church of God, which devours and consumes me. Accept, O Lord, the sacrifices of my life for the Mystical Body of thy holy Church." She was also a victim soul for particular individuals. Other examples of victim souls are St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. Gemma Galgani, and Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity. In practice, the offering of oneself as a victim for souls should never be permitted except to souls of whom the Holy Spirit asks it with a persistent and irresistible motion of grace. It should be noted that, rather than contributing to the sanctification of the individual (although it does add something), this particular act is ordained to the spiritual benefit of others. The soul that would give itself in this way for the salvation of others must itself be intimately united with God and must have traveled a long way toward its own perfection in charity. It must be a soul well schooled in suffering and even have a thirst for suffering. Under these conditions the spiritual director could prudently permit a soul to make this oblation of self as a victim soul. Then, if God accepts the offering, the soul can become a faithful reproduction of the divine Martyr of Calvary.

I was in a very controlling church environment. Lived in one of their houses ect. So I absolutely said some of the things you did during your reaction. It was weird to be insulted by someone being nice and not challenging me on my sin for the longest time. Anyway I have the thought that so many demons were in fact psychological troubles now. Our understanding of psychology and our mental states and needs needs to be evaluated as much as any yearly physical exam. Sadly that's just now what happens. Because that field of mental health is sadly lagging behind. Thanks for the thoughts and review. Plus adorable kitty!

23:30 Absolutely. And once you learn the origin of god and religion in general, which existed WAY before Yahweh was even a thing, you will realize just how crazy it is. Does it prove that a god or creator doesn't exist?... not even close. All that it proves is that our interpretation of god is completely impossible and that the stories told in The Bible are completely fictional. I personally don't believe any of it, but I get why some people do.

I'd be curious to hear your perspective on miracles and how the Catholic Church scrutinizes them. I think the church likes to claim that its officially recognized ones are well vetted with outside sources but I am somewhat dubious of that claim. I'm ex-catholic myself and I have not had any good or bad supernatural experiences. I have known a couple people who believe they have, and as such I'd call myself agnostic. But I think one should always default to there being some natural explanation and acknowledge that we know nothing concrete about any deity or deities that might exist.

The only exorcism movie I've seen is The Rite. Love me some Anthony Hopkins, actually really enjoyed it. Exorcisms...I'm still a practicing Catholic, so yeah, I believe in them. That said, I'm also a recovering scrupleholic, and I'm not entirely sure Fr. Gabriel Amaroth is entirely...sane, I guess would be the word. I feel like he dives into sensationalism a little much. My favorite "public" exorcist is Fr. Vince Lampert for the simple reason that the guy is actually pretty milquetoast and unflappable. He did an interview over on Matt Fradd's channel, and he talks about demons the way you'd talk about organizing your sock drawer. "Yeah, I exorcised this woman. Then I stopped at Dairy Queen and got a milkshake and went home." Demons just are completely something he doesn't fear, and not in a prideful "I know I've got God on my side" way but more in a "yeah, that's what I did on Tuesday....why do you ask?" way. Seeing him talk actually went a ways toward making me less afraid.

Exorcist. always be the greatest possession movie. but after reading malachi martin's book Hostage to the Devil, i realized these "possessed" people are just screwed up or looking for attention. Watch the 20/20 episode which supposedly showed a real exorcism. nothing fancy happened, but then the narrator says that a few days after the exorcism, the demons returned and they had to pull the young girl down off the ceiling. good thing the cameras weren't around for that...

I lived with my Grandparents at a young age, my so called parents were not very good parents nor humans. I was baptized when I was around 7 years old, I remember sleeping and all of a sudden with no control over my body ( I was aware of what was happening but no control) Bit I sat up in bed and my Legs and mid section literally rotated towards the side of the bed. Then I stand up walk to my Grandparents bedroom and literally stand in front of the bed and just kept staring at them in the dark, (it seemed like for hours) then I eventually go back to my room lay down and fall a sleep. Im not sure how long I was asleep for but I woke up right away and sat up in my bed and in the middle of the room was a semi shaped black cloudish figure, you could almost see through it but not quiet. It was wearing ( it appeared to be a cloak with a hood and reddish eyes) man I tell you I was completely wide awake I slammed the back of my head against the wall from sitting up so fast. I did t know what was happening why it was happening and could even talk or scream for help it was like my voice was completely non existent. So in my mind I could still hear my own voice so I tried to calm down a bit( butI was shi**ing myself, not really but you know what I’m saying ) I kept repeating for god to please help me, and the more I talked to god the more calm I got. And eventually kept saying over and over “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus Christ” and this shadowy figure literally just poof disappeared. In the morning I was still pretty shook, the back of my head was sore and swollen. I told my Grandmother the whole story, she told me “Eric you were just baptized last week, and satan doesn’t want you to be a Christian. He was t to scare you he wAnts you to not have faith. Later on in life I have had other experiences like being grabbed by the back of the neck and being lifted out or my bed and flung around like rag doll, I’ve seen dark shadows of things . But kept my faith and pray to the creator, I don’t go to church(because it seems the collection plate and what type of car you drive is more important than the word of Jesus Christ.) But I think my faith and believing in the word of the lord makes up for it. Thanks sorry for the long spiel

I've been fascinated by this for a while. Do you think possession events are completed fake? As in, it's a combination between mental illness and religious conditioning, perhaps religion INDUCED mental illness above and beyond normal medical criteria? Or is there any possibility in your mind that there may be some other "real" entity involved in this? What do you think?

I’m Italian, in my country some exorcists do perform exorcisms even during night time sometimes, I witnessed to one almost twenty years ago of a friend of mine, and I assure you is a kind of experience you are not going to forget for a long long time. Still now every now and then I can barely sleep with lights off, I do not intend to convince people especially because if I hadn’t seen myself that I wouldn’t believe in someone coming to me saying the exact things I saw. Just bear in mind that an exorcism is not a normal experience for as much terrible it could be witnessed only by eyes, you feel it. The air in the environment changes, the odor surrounding you changes, a smirky possessed face doesn’t just look at you , it feeds from you it sucks you all from withing and sometimes, as it happened for my case, it can follow you home haunting you for the next ten months even to a point you wake up in the morning not being able to remember your name for a moment, you no longer sleep, and you have to go to work the next day. It’s not to be taken lightly!!!! Non believers usually say < you got no proof that God exists> well, I’d rather overturn that statement like this < you non believer must worry about your belief and be preoccupied to find proofs of the non existence of God, cause if there are any chances you are wrong , well … ‘Houston, we have a problem here’.

@@GIj349 I have no trouble with saying "God" exists. It is just that what I mean by "God" and what you mean by "God" and what a dozen different Christian sects mean by "God" are VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. You Christians cannot agree on what Being, Person, Nature and Will ARE. I prefer to avoid this problem in my new invented theology: I see God as an Activity and is therefore not the same as our terminology. As for Exorcism.......I'm afraid that I do not doubt your Testimony that you actually "experienced" something, it is just without me personally PERSONALLY, having a sit down intellectual conversation with "the demonic" I'm afraid I cannot just jump to believing your conclusion. Might not a "demon" be something else? It could be some unexplained being, like what the Ancient Greek or Celts called an Elemental or a Fairy? It could be any number of other beings? ( Why are demons given a whole temple to inhabit in Hinduism? Why do Jews and Muslims claim to drive out demons without the name of Jesus? ) I am very eager to "experience the proof." Any time I can have a sit down conversation with a demon...believe me.....I have a million questions for that demon, about the whole nature of the cosmos. )

He talks about the timeline in other videos. It fits. If I remember correctly, he did lose his faith during his first assignment as a parish priest. Or rather, as he told it, he didn’t leave his faith; it left him. And it did weigh heavily on him that he had gone all the way through seminary only to be forced to start over completely. Many others have been in such a position and decided to continue priestly work because they couldn’t bring themselves to re-enter the real world starting from zero. To leave the Church was an act of integrity and faithfulness to the truth.

21:36 Well hold on, the bible itself is full of phrases that basically boil down to 'follow our rules to the letter or you'll go to hell for eternity.' It's not about whether your actions are morally right or wrong, it's about avoiding the punishment of eternal damnation. And who decides what's morally correct? Your moral compass isn't the same as mine, so why do your rules and laws get to decide what i'm allowed and not allowed to do? Why was it ok for christians to murder millions of people for refusing to accept their religion, but it's wrong for me to kill somebody if they did something i disapproved of? And yes, I do only refrain from murdering certain people because i'd go to jail for it. Just like you only follow the religious rules because you were taught about hell as a child.
