Max von Sydow (Father Merrin) was such a wonderful actor both on stage and screen. He started his movie career at age 20 and continued working until his death when he was 90. He can be seen in all kind of movies, bad and good. But he always performed at his best. When given a bit role in a crappy horror flick he treated it like he was playing Shakespeare. In this one he was in his early 40s, but the makeup makes him look twice that age. Not knowing this, you might think it's an old actor. So hats off to a great makeup department that did a fine job that most missed. Also, Sydow was convincingly playing an old man.

Funny Exorcist story. When I first saw The Exorcist I was around 9 years old. I snuck out of my bedroom to watch it in the living room late at night after my parents went to sleep. I pulled a blanket up over the TV to block out the glow from the screen making a little tent. I did this because I knew I would get into trouble if I got caught out of bed and watching the movie. After the movie finished I was pretty scared and was sneaking back to my bedroom in the dark with my blanket wrapped around my shoulders. Along the way I stubbed my toe on a coffee table that had a small cactus plant on it. When I tried to stop my fall my hand slammed down on the cactus and I was sure the devil had just got me and I got ready to scream for help. It then occurred to me that my cry for help would wake up my parents so I made not a peep. It was at that moment I realized I was more scared of my Pa than I was of the Devil. 😂

I studied to be a priest in my youth with the Dominicans. I met Malachi Martin, who had written one of the defining works on possession, entitled "Hostage to the Devil" which detailed a number of cases, all very disturbing. I then went through a long period where I was a very convinced atheist, but since have returned to a belief in God--but not the deity of any dogmatic faith. I'm skeptical that there are any actual cases of demon possession, but there are clearly instances where it has appeared to have happened because of the actions of the afflicted, and the Rite of Exorcism did appear to cure them. The main issue I had with the film is that the Rite itself did not help Regan, Father Merrin was defeated, and it was Father Karras' rage and challenge to the Devil that freed her as he regained control momentarily and was able to commit suicide. That could hardly be considered a triumph of Faith over demonic forces.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth, I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most were the demon flashes.😱😱 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always🤣 3. The spider-walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The loud banging with the medical equipment is for dramatic effect. 5. Father Merin and the demon/Pazuzu had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. Chris MacNeil/Ellen Burstyn actually broke her coccyx when the demon makes her hard fall. That wince and scream of pain is the real deal.😱 7. The first priest Karras admits his lack of faith to/Tom, was a real priest. 8. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 9. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 10. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness for his loss of faith. 11. RIP Willian Freidkin😇

There's long scenes of just walking to and from someplace. The door to Reagan's room is always shut. As if they're trying to keep the evil contained. Everything is designed to build momentum. And subconsciously, we want to face the evil. But the movie just continues to build and build and build. And so frustration and a sense of dread begins to set in. Also, we see the slow changes in Reagan. When the movie, Joker was released. It took the same approach. An uneasy, slow burning fuse of character and plot development.

So, they decided to put the doll in New York City cab, and when they were stopped at stoplights, they had someone who was laying on the floor by the back seat, use the controls to turn the head and face the cars next to them. It obviously worked, because people in the cars were screaming in terror. Such a cruel joke!

Probably the most chilling thing for me was Regan speaking in reverse English. Not so much in the film, but in the book, which I read before the film. In the book what Regan says is written out, of course. So, when a chapter or two later the language lab guy asks Father Karras if he's trying to be funny and plays the tape in reverse and we hear, sorry *read*, perfect English, I had to flip the pages back to see for myself. And there it was, "enoonmai" - I am no one. That sent a shiver down my spine. The Devil had been speaking and I had been completely unaware. Great writing.

Thnx Emma you are the best ✌️🙂 Even I've seen this movie before, your reactions got to me. You don't want to play with that OUJA Board thing the girl found in the beginning of the movie. It's Evil 👹 Keep Rocking 🤘😎

Yeah for some reason I never saw this movie... never will... And i've seen just about every horror film there is But for some reason demonic possessions bother me more than gore or violence.. Don't know why and i'm not a religious person... I think it has to do with when I was little. I used to find it Scary as hell

One of the most serious horror films ever made. The few moments that could be considered light-hearted, or joking are legitimate interactions between characters, rather than something placed in the script to get a laugh from the audience. As a result the overall tone is just bleak, exposed, and real. Makes for a nice counter-balance to the subject matter being super-natural.

The Exorcist is one of the movies parodied in Scary Movie (2000) along with Scream, Scream 2, The Blair Witch Project, The Matrix, The Usual Suspects. It's parodied again in Scary Movie 2 (2001).

It was not singing that can be heard at start of movie, it is the Muslim Call to prayer (reffered to as the 'Azan').... It is heard in every mosque around the world, 5 times a day to remind and call all muslims that it is time to worship GOD...

Linda Blair was mostly traumatized by the back injury she got from that one scene where she was being flung up and down on the bed. She was actually screaming in that part. Other than that, she’s fine. She’s the founder of the Linda Blair World Heart Foundation, an animal rescue in Burbank California.

Linda Blair who played the part of young Regan reprised her role, now as an adult with her own family, in the spoof movie "Repossessed"

The sequel is one you do not need to watch it would have been better unmade. The third one though is worth watching.

I’ve never seen either sequel. Is the third one easy to follow if you don’t watch the second?

@@KevyNova Yes, the third one is a proper movie in the series, some great scenes in that.

@KevyNova The third is like part 2 never existed. It goes into what happened to Father Karras years after the exorcism.

The third movie is based on the book "Legion" by William Peter Blatty and is a direct sequel to "The Exorcist".

I seen this the first time in 1984 and it still gives me nightmares, permanent trauma.

This film is loosely based on a true story that happened to a boy In New England in the 1950's and writer William Peter Blatty turned the story into a New York Times Bestseller.
