Can you help an old altar boy, father?
Today we watch The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, starring Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair. Altaf’s NEVER seen it, and Chris has seen it only once. This was a hell of a movie, and we don’t think we’ll ever watch it again. We mean that in the best way possible!!

I feel like a lot of people go into The Exorcist expecting it to be something like The Conjuring -- a scary but fun and campy horror movie that scares you but in a fun way. Nope. IT'S ACTUALLY SCARY.

I stopped finding horror scary after about age 12. It's probably because i don't believe in any religions, mythologies, superstitions, or spirituality in any way. That said, i do find many of them entertaining, and sometimes disturbing. The Exorcist, The Haunting of Hill House, The Witch, Heredity, The Shining being among my favorites. But the Conjuring? Yikes. I thought that was really dumb and really boring.

Nominated for 10 Oscars including Best Picture but won for Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Screenplay. It's one of the scariest motion pictures ever made! It was the first Horror film to win the Golden Globe for Best Picture in the drama category. Yeah, Jason Miller, the actor who played Karras wasn't very happy about it. William Friedkin was constantly pulling crap like that on the cast to get visceral performances, not giving a damn about their health and safety. Linda Blair sufered permanent back injury and pnuemonia, the actress playing her mother suffered injuries from being pulled and thrown about during the crucifix scene. Friedkin even fired a gun off right next to Miller's ear to get him to jump like that when the phone rang. Great film-maker, utter prick to his cast, though.

That is why the main target for the demon isn't Megan, nor Merin, but it is Karris. It wanted to destroy any last remaining vestige of faith this man had left. I believe that was Blatty's approach when he wrote this novel. To write it from the stand point of a Jesuit priest. The following was my viewpoint when I first saw this film: I climb up those stairs with my cache containing my holy water, my rosary and beeds and my confidence . Feeling good amd ready to kick some good ole demon butt. I walk into the room, the temperature dramatically drops, and the thing on the bed leers at me and says: "Oh, what an excellent day for an exorcism..." I grab up all my stuff and get the hell out of there!

@@NiceDudeMovieNight Not surprising since the book and movie were inspired by a real exorcism that took place in St. Louis in 1949. The actual exorcism involved a possessed boy and in the actual exorcism, the priests were able to expel the demon. It’s very rare for Catholic priests to do such a major exorcism because they consult psychologists and therapists before making any decisions. It’s almost always mental illness rather than demon possession.

1. I was 13 when I saw this in the theater with friends. What rating system they had at the time wasn't really followed that closely. By word of mouth I was aware of the head spinning, vomiting and language but what freaked me the most was the demon flashes. 2. When the doctor is looking at Regan's skull x-ray and says, "Nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider walk down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 5. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 6. Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 7 Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness of his MORTAL SIN of suicide with the other priest. 8. Imagine how hard it was to sell that house.

This film is a masterpiece. Interestingly, Director William Friedkin (who won an Oscar for Best Director just 2 years before for The French Connection) treated the subject matter with absolute seriousness and it was filmed (much like The French Connection) in a documentary style (with the exception of the last act). He has never referred to this film as a horror film but a film about the mystery of faith. He went from this to making another masterpiece called Sorcerer. His 4th masterpiece was To Live and Die in L.A. Great filmmaker.

I think the issue was that the scene wasn't convincing because the contortionist who did the spider-walk was supported by wires, which could be clearly seen in the footage, so Freidkin cut the scene out. It was restored in the 2000 Director's Cut because the technology existed by then to digitally remove the wires from the film.

The movie and book were based on an actual exorcism that was done in 1949. Since I’m a Catholic, I am well aware that this was the only serious exorcism ever performed in the United States. However, unlike the movie, the actual priests succeeded in expelling the demon. We will likely never know the name of the actual boy because his parents made the Catholic Church promise to never reveal his name. The boy who had been possessed has no memory of the possession and went on to have a normal life.

This is based on a true story. In real life it was a boy that was possessed. The exorcism took place in Alexian Brothers hospital on the 2nd floor in St. Louis. It took a long time for the exorcism to be successful. They had to shut down the floor after the exorcism. Eventually they had to rebuild the hospital. The old hospital still remains locked down. I was a courier and had a flower delivery to the 2nd floor. I accidentally went to the old building. Walked in and took the elevator to the 2nd floor. It was abandoned. Security came in and couldn't understand how I got in and the elevator hadn't worked since the incident. I had chills because I knew of the story. The movie is called possessed. I think it's pretty interesting to see the Theatrical Version of all films first, then see the longer Dir Cut because - how else do you know what impact those added scenes have? How else can you even tell what's added or not? Unfortunately... you can skip a lot of the opening but the last half remains as powerful and sinister as ever. @@ollietsb1704 There are re-edits (Director's cuts, Special editions, Extended editions, etc.) that add to the movie, there are re-edits that just add padding to the runtime, and there are re-edits that hurt the movie. IMHO the re-cut of The Exorcist is inferior to the theatrical version. The flashes of Pazuzu don't add anything to the movie except add a few jump scares, and the now famous spider-walk is superfluous. The movie flows much better, and has a much greater sense of unease the way it was released in 1973. Other movies where the theatrical cut is better than the alternate version includes Alien, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Lethal Weapon, 1408, and Payback. Alternate cuts that pad the runtime, but don't significantly add to the story include Dances with Wolves, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and however much I hate to say it, because I love the Special Editions of these movies: Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Movies that greatly benefited from the additional footage or having it re-cut include The Abyss, JFK, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (The Director's Cut, not the Special Edition), and Blade Runner (The Final Cut, not any of the other 3 alternate versions). That said, as long as the original theatrical version remains available, I like to see other versions so you can compare them and see the choices that were made. Unfortunately, it happens on occasion that the original theatrical version is taken out of circulation, like the original Star Wars trilogy and 1408.

I was in the 7th grade when my dad came and took me out of class to go see this movie. I was riveted to my seat too scared to move, but I left the theater with a smile on my face. I had an awesome time. Years later when The Exorcist got another theatrical release that include additional footage not seen in the original, (like Regan crab walking down the stairs), I took my dad to the theater so we could watch it again together. Nice bookend for the original adventure.

Great Reaction, its fantastic how well this movie still holds up compared to a lot of movies today and still is quite shocking. Most of The Exorcist's sequels aren't the greatest, but The Exorcist III is actually pretty great, and could be worth reacting to (Not sure if other people in the comment section has recommended this too). Has some great writing and performances, was also directed by the actual writer of the Exorcist novels.

The theatrical cut is better. It doesn't overuse the flashes of Pazuzu's face and has a better ending. Edit: I thought this was going to be the recut version based on another comment, but it looks like you watched the theatrical cut. Good choice.

The best make-up has to be the old age effect on Max Von Sydow (Father Merrin). He was only in his early forties when the film was made. It looks so close to his actual features when he reached old age too.

Having tried hypnotism to stop biting my nails I can explain the reason Reagan's hand was in the air. When the hypnotist tests you to see if you are open to suggestion (hypnotism) they have you hold out both arms with your eyes closed. They talk about your left hand holding a heavy bucket full of rocks and how you can just feel its weight and making your arm tired. They also talk about your right hand holding a big bunch of helium balloons and how light it is pulling your hand up into the sky. They go back and forth between each scenario for a short while. Those open to suggestion will have their right hand higher into the air and the left one lower than where they started. Its pretty cool.

It's also demonic symbolism, seen in paintings and statues of the devil and various demons/deities, for example Baphomet, Satan, and Pazuzu (the deity/demon depicted by the statue in this film). A similar posture can be seen in the Shining. Usually the other hand points downwards, so the two hands represent "as above, so below". But here, instead of her other hand gesturing to "below", it appears to be gesturing to herself.

Linda Blair had a horrible time making this movie because they weren't looking out for her health during this. She said she caught pneumonia because she was the only one who didn't have warm gear on when they deliberately made the room cold so that it looked good on film. The crew and two actors as priests had jackets at least. She said she was in a thin nightgown and nothing much else. The covers on the bed weren't thick enough to keep her warm. The glue prosthetics would burn and irritate her face so badly. The contacts bothered her eyes. She got severe injuries to her back because of the the rig they had her in that flipped her all over the bed. Cast and crew had flickering lighting, deaths in their families and fires on set. I think she actually wrote a book and put in her experience making that movie, and her life after making it. For years...even still today, as groen as I am, her demon face still scares me. I used to see it on the backs of my eye lids when I would try to go to sleep. This movie starts out slow, but it gives you a moment between beats to see the progression and change of how darker it gets....especially her face makeup. You can tell how the demon was gaining more power over her body by how much more demonic she would look. I'm not sure if you caught it, but Father Merrin faced that particular demon before, so that's why he was so sickly because of what the last exorcism of it did to him. The way the demon shouted his name when he came into the house, told you how much this demon was ready for round 2.

Ellen Burstyn who played the girl's mother had a harness with a cable on it and the off camera prop guy would pull on it to make her hitting the floor look real after Reagan slaps her across the room. William Freidkin (the director) signaled to the guy to pull extra hard on the cable and when she hit she lets out a scream that was real pain and they kept it in the movie. Burstyn said she's battled lower back trouble ever since.

The director William Friedkin got such genuine reactions and performances because kept the cast on edge all the time. He would lie to the cast about what the effects where going to do, he told Miller that the "pea soup" would hit him in the chest not the face, when Burstyn is thrown against the wall she was attached to a rope, in rehearsals and for the first few takes the stunt coordinator just pulled her on her ass, but for the final take Friedkin had him slam her into the wall, he had Linda Blair in a body brace for the scene where shes slamming up and down in bed, he again had the stunt coordinators pull her harder than rehearsals and kept it going so long the brace broke and damaged her back, and when William O'Malley (who was a real priest not an actor) was giving the last rights to Damien he look so genuinely shaken up because just before calling action Friedkin slapped him hard across his face. He would also randomly fire guns on set if he felt the tension dropping.

I used to know Regan thanks to the Scary Maze Game, and a really suspicious glitch that happened after watching a compilation of the reactions, made by a channel called 999afvVids (if anyone else remembers that channel, please tell me) where the video of the reactions played and then ended with what the maze actually looked like from a first person perspective. I was like 8, and it wasn't even the worst part. The next time I clicked on the channel (still in my bookmarks) it either corrupted or something because all I saw were those soulless green, deathly ill eyes, in each thumbnail picture. I was terrified and still can't look at the picture some days.

A great reaction! I'm glad you watched the original version, too. The extended one has one really creepy scene but otherwise I think it doesn't do the movie any favors. Sadly, I wasn't sold on Linda Blair's performance as her normal self. Maybe it's just the cruel, cold, and distant sub-arctic culture I grew up in, but by Crom, I've only seen kids like that in 1960s Disney films, so to me, the contrast felt really artificial.

What an iconic film. It's the only movie that actually scared me because it's based off of a real life exorcism. I've read stories about how this movie was plagued with bad luck during production. There were multiple fires, accidents, and I believe a couple of people were seriously injured and I think someone died. The actress that played Reagan, Linda Blair, never really recovered from this movie. Creepy af. But it's such a well-made film, I just wish that they hadn't cut out the scene where Reagan was climbing down the stairs upside down, it's in the director's cut though.
