This is how a trailer is done. It's tells you a very short summary of what the film is, but doesn't reveal anything of real relevance to the actual movie. From this trailer, audiences in the 70s could see that it's a horror film about demon possession. They could have no idea what they were really in for when they went to see it. This is how all movie trailers should be. Now a days, trailers from all genres give the entire movie away.

I'm old enough to remember when this movie was released in 1973. It hit the world with an effect that no other movie has before or since. The film affected many audiences so strongly that at many theaters, paramedics were called to treat people who fainted and others who went into hysterics. Without a doubt, this is the greatest horror movie of all time.

What made this film especially scary, in my opinion, is that the director, writer, and actors made the unbelievable, believable. It revealed to the world a whole new universe, one that is primordial, dark, and hostile, of which little is known about. The trailer gives us a glimpse by stating, "somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world. A world of darkness". Just remember this film was the first of its kind, and therefore people were not used to watching such dark, in-your-face movies about the Evil One. It's one of those movies that captured the minds of people (on a global scale) just at the right time. That is why this film is a masterpiece.

iPermanently This movie worked because it played harshly upon the beliefs of Christians in a time where things were a bit more innocent. It was well produced, graphic and over the top(masturbation with a crucifix comes to mind) when no one had seen such things before outside of grindhouse and snuff films. Now there's probably fewer Christians to tweak the nerves of a primal fear in and most of us have seen far worse things on screen as well.

Beyond imagination I was even younger, something around 7 or 8. A hidden VHS tape in our apartment. My mom hid it well so I could never watch it. And I watched a lot of tapes, everything I could get my hands on. I found the Exorcist and have always been curious. I didn't get to finish it as my mom came home from work and ran to shut the TV off. Then she hid it even better (or destroyed it?) and I never found the tape again. Then at 12, as DVD's were getting popular my brother rented the uncut DVD version of the Exorcist. I finally got to see the whole movie. It was the most frightening thing I've ever seen, and it still holds up as one of the scariest and most brilliant horror films of all time.

This film is a classic, it always will be. The best of it's time. Everyone now in this day and age are so used to possession movies it doesn't faze them to see this as a spine chilling masterpiece, which it is. Possession movies come out to theater it seems every week. But back when this movie came out it was a true scare. People fainted in the theater watching this movie. You can watch here on KZbin people waiting in line and their reactions to the movie during and afterwards, I just think now we all have the "we've seen one we've seen them all" syndrome. It does take a good movie to scare me these days because possession movies have become so over sauced. But this one will always give me chills. Just my opinion. Epic film!

When I was a kid my Mum had a stack of videos by the T.V. and from a young age I always remembered one particular VHS tape that stood out. My Mum had used one of those flat plastic, neat-handwriting-stencil things to carefully spell out the legend: "THE EXORCIST" on the white strip of paper on it. It was written in purple ink. She had recorded it off of the T.V. My brothers and I remember asking my Mum for years what "The Exorcist" was, that was stacked between RoboCop and The Terminator, and whether we could watch it, and always questioned "why?", when she answered in the negative. It was an "Adults film, scary." She always told us. Naturally heightening our curiosity. We grew up in an Irish Catholic family in England, where old wives' tales, suspicions and ghost stories abounded. At a family sleepover at our house, my brothers, cousins and I sneaked the VHS up to our bedroom where we had all gathered for the secret viewing, lights off, at night. We each had heard some small parts of information regarding this taboo film and through sneaky thievery I had the tape proudly in hand, like forbidden fruit, ready for the 7 of us to watch. The age range of the family gathering was from age 5 upto 11. I was 8. I remember watching the purple ink inscription disappear behind the flap as the tape clicked and slotted into place. Then the screen lit up and the movie started. There was a feeling of tense excitement. Thrilling. Braggadocio. Giggles. False bravery. I sat on my top bunk next to my cousins. My heart started migrating northward towards my mouth as I became more and more paralyzed by fear, which then turned into pure, un-distilllled terror during the worst of scenes. The momentary flash of that death face particularly horrified me. We were all terrified through the entire movie. I couldn't sleep properly for a week after. This happened in the mid '90s and to this day, even when I think about that film and I see the purple ink written on the tape, it sends a shiver down my spine. It shook me to the core, to the point where I am, more or less, now unable to watch horror movies. Even the music in this film puts me on edge. I have managed to watch this film with my Mum, just once, and I told her about when we sneaked it as kids. I told her she was totally right all those years ago. I should've left the tape well alone and not touched it - listened to my Mum the same way I listened regarding the creepy Ouija board in Grandad's airing cupboard. I'm glad that stayed put. The book was incredible, too. Scared me as much as the movie. Incredible film, truly the greatest horror movie ever.

I was a film student in college when it came out. I saw everything. But close friends who saw it said "I wouldn't advise seeing it, it's just really unsettling, etc". So it came out in Dec 1973 and I waited until sometime in January, trying to decide whether to go (I know, sounds silly, but people were really freaked out). Rainy day. Coming home from a doctors appointment. Drove by a theater...big sign "THE EXORCIST." Next showing in about 20 minutes. I pulled over, got out and said 'Heck with it, I'm going." Went in sat down, music in the theater was playing the old song "What kind of fool am I?" LOL. Lights went down. I had seen enough Warner Brothers films to know that they start in silence with a big "WB" logo coming from mid screen right at you and zooming toward you. This did too, but for once, while the letters came toward you, an eerie sound came at the same time until the logo settled. I felt like ..."Whoah....that's different." (this sound, called "Crystal Glass" on the soundtrack, is apparently not on any copies of the film I can find today). The opening sequence in Iraq was mesmerizing, very little dialog, all mood. Then it transitioned to Georgetown, and I saw Ellen Burstyn for the first time. "Oh, Karl, we've got rats in the attic" she says. He answers "No, it's clean..." She says "OK, then we've got clean rats." I was hooked already. By the film's end I was so stunned I just sat there until all the credits were over, trying to take in what I had just seen. Jason Miller....who is this guy? Brilliant. Even the real priests in the film were excellent. I left the theater, and called my cousin (literally pulled over to a pay phone I was so excited)... my movie buddy. "Guess what I just saw?"....."What?" she said...."The Exorcist" I answered. "Oh man.....AND? " I said " "And, I think it may be one of the greatest films I've ever seen." She and I went back to see it and probably saw it at the movies about 20 times , we were so addicted to the film. To this day we text and trade lines back and forth from the film and joke about it. I am so glad to have grown up in a time when I could see films like Chinatown, Godfather, Jaws, etc, at the theater. But this one was special. Forget about whether it's the scariest film of all time. It is simply one of the greatest films of all time. Thanks for reading.

I never thought it would happen, but this movie has proven to have a kind of half-life in terms of shock value. These days, people are either really disturbed by it, or almost completely indifferent to it. One way or the other, 40 years ago it gave the world a collective nervous breakdown...and I think it's the best movie ever made--horror or otherwise.

The Exorcist is one of the scariest and greatest horror movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, astomphere, tension, and cinematography was so suspenseful, frightening, haunting, mysterious, thrilling, intense, eerie, creepy, and spooky 😰😱 which works perfectly for the movie. It was such a nail-biting and intense thrill ride as it will keep you on the edge of your seat. 😰😱 It really identifies and analyzes the boundaries between good and evil. Linda Blair did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Regan MacNeil as he put tons of emotion and depth into her role. It was decent. This movie will absolutely and positivity give you nightmares I guarantee it.😰😱

There's something about the horror aspect of this film that absolutely gets under your skin. It's extremely atmospheric & nightmare inducing. It doesn't rely on jump scares. There's something very much horrific & unsettling about it. Upon your first viewing of it, you get the feeling that you shouldn't be watching it. It's absolutely a great horror/dramma. The acting & directing are both incredible. Today's horror movies still aspire to come close to this. It's relentless in it's attempt to truly haunt you. The film itself is a timeless masterpiece & film making at it's absolute best.

When I was a kid I was flipping through TV with my brother when we stumbled upon this movie. My brother quickly changed the channel and told me that it was the scariest movie ever. In my mind I thought to myself.. “what’s so scary about exercise?”. lol.. anyways later that night I went to bed and I wanted to watch tv in my room. I slept on the top bunk of a bunk bed with my younger brother who was passed out. I went to the channel and immediately saw Linda Blair’s head spinning. I freaked out and dropped the remote off the bed and laid with my head under the blankets shaking until I finally fell asleep. Years later in middle school me and a friend decided to watch it. We laughed our way through, but we’re also equally disturbed lol. I think we laughed to keep ourselves away from crying. Haha. I haven’t seen it ever since.

Ratings were different in the UK in 1973 - U (Universal), A (Advisory - not recommended for young children) AA (ages 14+) and X (ages 18+). The current system didn't come into use until the 1980s. The old 'X' certificate would be the equivalent of the modern day '18'.

Initially saw this movie when it came out at a midtown Manhattan movie theater. The lines ran down the block the movie was playing at and then around a corner and down an entire street. You couldn't get a ticket unless you were four or five hours ahead of the showtime you were interested in. Just watching people's faces as they were leaving the theater told you everything you needed to know. You could cut the tension inside the theater with a knife. The Exorcist was the talk of the town for weeks, if not months after it was released. It was the gold standard and crème de la crème of horror movies.

My favorite movie of all time. They couldn't make a movie like this now with all there CGI effects and cheap shock tricks..this was groundbreaking. Thanks to the brilliant acting which made it seem real, the brilliant script, directing, cinematography and that voice of the devil by mercedes and the haunting tubular bells music score it is a classic movie, you cannnot duplicate something like that. It should of won far more awards than just a couple, a movie ahead of its time. My favorite scene of all time is when Regan kills Merrin and she is curled up against the bedpost giggling!! Friedken didn't hold the shot long enough though...this trailer really pulls you in. I wasn't scared in 73 when I saw it just completely mesmerized by it

I was seven years old, and this is the advert on tv I recall for The Exorcist. I remembered her running upstairs, all the stuff flying at the window (even tho the two moments aren't shown together, nor were they together in the movie) the i.v. bottle breaking, and her opening the door to the black hat silhouette outside and his standing in the street. I thought he was the evil being in the movie. I may recall the candle lighting up, I'm not sure. I was seven. You think I wanted to see this thing? No way. It was years later I saw it on tv. Just always remembered this advert.
