Bizi Pitiko was a "Slingshot" racer. They use the gravity of planets and moons to accelerate. Basically slinging themselves through the solar system. Only sometimes, as in Bizi's case, they get too close and burn up in whatever atmosphere that particular planetary body has.

So, my story... I saw one of these "space battle analysis" KZbin videos. I don't even remember which channel this was, but they talked about this battle. Half way through that video I paused and instantly sought out this show, and I have forevermore been happy to have seen this series!

Interesting! For me I had forgotten that I had actually tried the show when it was airing on SyFy but gave up on it episode 2 or 3. Years later I saw a gif of the moment the Roci is escaping the Donnager (the scene where it's shooting at everything while moving horizontally). Thought the gif was cool as hell and wanted to find out where it came from. Found out and started watching the show only to realize that it was the same show I had originally given up on years before. Now of course it is my ALL TIME FAVORITE SHOW! It's the best thing I've ever watched on a screen be it tv or movie. It's crazy to think that it all happened from catching a random gif.

As you watch more of this show, especially in season 3, you will see that it's not always the boring good people vs evil people dynamic that other shows do. It's often many people all doing good and evil things because of their own valid viewpoints on the world they see. In some cases you will see how both sides are right in their own ways. This show is amazing in that way. The people do things that make sense for who they are and it add so much believably to the show. Season 1 is kind of the odd season out, the show gets so good in S2 and S3

Shed lost his head to a railgun round which transected the ship, leaving 300mm holes in every bulkhead along the way and causing the Donnager to vent to space (the same way that the Knight did when its airlock was breached in Episode 2. This scene allowed the writers to show Naomi and Amos working together to effect "Damage Control" which is a necessity for ships in space.

This is the episode I knew I wasn't just watching a good sci-fi, but something truly special. A brutally realistic depiction of how space battles would function in a near future hard sci-fi setting. No sci-fi magic shields, just hoping your Point Defense Cannons (PDCs) can shoot down their torpedos before they blow you to smithereens, and if something does hit you, it's gonna rip through you like your ship is made of paper. Shed's death by railgun shot is evidence enough of that. And then, seeing Holden employ some clever use of Newtonian Mechanics in zero-G to return both himself and Naomi safely to that walkway in the midst of that crazy shootout showed that this is a show dedicated to using realistic physics as often as possible. Amazing. The little world building details such as there being a sport built around using gravitational assist slingshots to race across the solar system without engine power (that's what the Bizi Betiko guy was doing) really make this feel so real and believable. To contextualise some of Lopez's (the Martian sergeant) remarks about Earthers living meaningless lives and waiting for handouts - the Earth has a population of 30 billion by this point and there isn't enough work to go around - or at least there's not a fair/efficient way to allocate it, or to ensure everyone has the same opportunities. Some things never change I guess. (Edit: see the replies for more expansion on this last part, I wasn't as clear as I could be.)
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 8 ай бұрын
There never has been, nor witll there ever be, a society where "there isn't enough work to go around". There will always be mountains of work that needs doing, but never seems to get done. The issue is that people running things refuse to allocate the available money to pay people to do the work, or the available people refuse to work for the wage being offerred, which is one of the major issues with offering a Basic Guaranteed Income.

@@Yesquire0 Yes, I sort of realised that as I was typing my comment, but I think I meant it more in the metaphorical sense, and tried to clarify that with the rest of that statement. My apologies for not being clear enough. You're totally right that the responsibility for these situations broadly rests with the people at the top not doing enough to give people opportunities or allocate the necessary funding to make these things happen - opting instead for the cheaper and easier route.

Fighting a common enemy as a means of unification is indeed a story as old as we are and something playing out today. I also find that we aren't very good at adjusting our behavior with and eye toward the long term. Maybe that's understandable as it's hard to ask an individual to make a sacrifice for a benefit they'll never see, but perhaps we're getting better at it? This show does a great job developing characters, and highlighting the reality than everyone is flawed, and some you initially dislike may turn out to be a fav. Fun watching you, hope you stay with it.

This show is layered with details that can be easily missed the first time through, and there are other details and conversations that may be foreshadowing and revealed in future episodes which makes rewatching so rewarding. Did you notice the blue interior lighting during the battle sequences? The Martian red alert is blue, since Earth is their potential enemy. I didn't catch Lopez telling our crew to turn off their mag boots in order to cross the ramp more quickly until my second rewatch. Typically, they'll want their mag boots on in an emergency situation because you never know when the engine thrust might cut out.

One of the things this show does very well is it doesn’t have traditional villains who are always the “bad guys” Everyone thinks their point of view is the right one. It shows all the major players (Earth, Mars & the Belters) have their own perspectives- Earth doesn’t trust Mars or the Belt, Mars doesn’t trust the Earth or the Belt The belt knows Earth & Mars will always take advantage of them…. Very few characters are truly bad or good. They may do some terribly bad things, but when you find out their motivations they might not have been completely wrong - lots of shades of grey (kinda like real life eh?) It’s a great show, Enjoy the ride! 🚀

Alex mentioned the blue light was "battle" lighting, blue instead of the usual "red alert." That's because Mars is the "red planet" and Earth is the "blue planet" so the Martian "red alert" is a "blue alert." Others have mentioned that Bitzi Bitiko was "slingshotting." That was not a filler scene...this series has no filler scenes. It's there because you're going to need to know about slingshotting in the future. This episode really showed how physics is a character of this show. Something you said... must...not...spoil! Must...resist! Oh, the pain...the pain!

That racer who dies on live feed as his ship burns up was using a method of flying into a gravity pull of a moon or planet and allowing it to boost your speed as you go around and pull back out of it's grasp. Humans have already used this cool feature of gravity too. Getting craft to distant planets other planets and moons have been visited on route and used to gain speed on a pass by to get to where they're going. So it's not a flashy sci fi concept and has some basis in physics.

I wouldn't think of this story as good vs evil. Its wayyy more complex than that, which is what makes this series one of the best to ever exist. People are just doing what they think is best, but that doesn't mean they're always right. And, while there are gonna be some truly awful characters, most characters -- even ones that'll be on opposing sides, tend to have good points when it comes to their motivations. So, I always tell ppl not to go in thinking this is a good vs evil story or that someone is bad because they did a bad thing. You'll see that there is a lot more to it than that. (In fact, you've already met a few characters who fit this description to a T).

(4:26) Religion's not going anywhere. Rightly or wrongly, religion fills gaps that science cannot. That said, the Expanse is not an idealistic show like Star Trek where "Religion is a thing of the past". The Expanse is a practical show that recognizes that religion does play a role in people's lives. This is not the last time you'll see the Mormons and other religions will factor into the story as well.

Are "all these stories the same"?. Well, some plot devices are pretty much necessary to move the story forward. With a story set in space, the major characters who play huge roles in the big story being told simply must have a ship to travel in. Our heroes, minus headless Shed, now have their own ship, a state of the art MCRN armed to the teeth. They are no longer helpless pawns. They can now make their own stories for us to view and be amazed.
