Naomi is a belter, you can tell from her mannerisms (talks with her hands, etc.) and her tattoo. It's already been mentioned that Amos is an Earther, as is James. On the Donnager it was revealed that he used to be in the UN Navy, but he was dishonorably discharged for refusing to fire on a smuggler ship (that was carrying refugees). Alex is Martian, he served in the MCR Navy as a transport pilot, and was honorably discharged, so he retained his rank (which is why they let him wear the uniform).

You were asking why people would leave Earth and Mars to exist in the belt? It is simple, for work and better opportunities. Remember, Earth is too crowded and Mars is too picky and have high standards. And keep in mind, Belters haven't lived or existed on Earth for generations. They were born in Space.
@shehansoysa5712 жыл бұрын
So when Amos says that Alex can't lift him, it's not a jab on Alex's strength as a person but as strong as a Martian. Earthers are stronger than most Martians and heavier. It was a safer bet for Alex to go down instead of Amos. Here are some quick notes on the differences in physiology between the people of Earth, Mars, and the Belt. Earthers are, on average, shorter, stronger, heavier (because of their bones and muscle mass), and take more oxygen. Martians are, on average, a bit taller, not as strong as earthers, and lighters from their less dense bones. Belters are the tallest in the system (at least in the books), have weak bones and muscles, but do really well in vacuum but depending on the gravity they grew up in, can do better or worse in high g fights. Fun fact (In the books, Naomi is the tallest one in the crew because of her belter background).

Bizi Bitiko burned to death because of a miscalculated slingshot orbit. Was overexcited about the payoff from betting on himself and got a bit too close to an atmosphere somewhere. That, however, was not the last of his troubles. He'd also had his identity stolen by the guy laying in the morgue. Nothing personal, just an implanted gizmo that randomly pulled an ID off the public directory whenever someone (like Miller) tried to call up his ID chip for info. Seems some people on Ceres really like their privacy. The low life expectancy in the Belt has to do with low gravity, thin air, rationed water, crummy food, and constant peril. Why would anyone voluntarily live there? For the chance to live a productive life away from the pointlessness of living on Earth anywhere below the ruling class. The government of Earth has basically dirt-farmed 80% of the potential workforce, paying a low stipend to cover rent & food but not allowing the bulk of its very large populace to actually work. It turns out many people don't like being forced to sit idle all the time. Condition Zero. Scuttle the ship means to destroy it so that it can't be taken over by the enemy and potentially be used against the MCRN. It's a signal that if the marines and prisoners wish to survive, they need to pick up the pace and abandon ship ASAP.
@Yesquire02 жыл бұрын
1. Bizi Betiko was "slingshotting", trying to run a course at record speed and using the gravity of moons or a planet to accelerate. He got into the upper atmosphere of a moon/planet and friction burnt up his space ship. It is a Belter version of street drag racing; 2. It's hard to catch upon first viewing, but the mystery attackers were clustered together at first, and then split up into six separate attack vessels. The Donager was the flagship of the Martian space fleet, but the odds were against it despite its size and firepower; 3. One of the weapons built into some of these warships are "railguns" which fire non-explosive heavy metal shells. Railguns are tech we have right now, but they don't seem to have enough destructive power to replace explosive shells. There is no defense against a railgun shell hitting your ship. They are fired electro-magnetically at very high speeds. The shells probably are made of tungsten, which is about as heavy as gold, but very common and cheap. While in theory ship designers could put very thick armor on warships, such armor would so add to the mass of the ship as to make it impractical to use in battle. It would be too slow and clumsy. So, instead, ship designers employ "anti-spalling" construction which encourages the slug to travel through the ship's hull, through all interior walls, and out the hull on the other side without crimping the hull or the interior walls or producing deadly shrapnel. If the slug doesn't destroy the reactor or life support systems, just plug the holes and keep fighting; 4. Amos used a binder to cover one of the holes left by the slug. The cover of the binder showed it to be a Martial emergency procedures manual; So, you've arrived at the fabled s1.e4. Action junkies get their fix with a rip-snorting space battle. It's a nice addition to the superb mysteries being told to viewers, but I've always felt there really isn't any reason to tell new viewers to "just wait until s1.e4 and you'll be hooked". One thing worth pondering is how many sci-fi space series have you watched where the protagonists did not have their own fab spaceship to tool around in? Our heroes now have possession of a state-of-the-art Martian war vessel to take them wherever they might want to go. In that sense, the series does, indeed, take off from this point onwards. Without their own ship, they've been pawns. Now they are at least rooks or knights in the chess game being played.
@dapeach062 жыл бұрын
Bit of a correction, railguns today are way more destructive than traditional artillery, but firing each railgun shell causes so much heat and pressure that the gun gets damaged very quickly by its own power. So they aren't practical to use yet. Tungsten is also WAY more dense and heavy than gold, it is one of the densest stable elements. The only common option that is more dense and heavy is depleted uranium

The medic's name was Shed Garvey, and the reason for his death is part of the show's apocrypha. The show had its birth as a TTRPG, with five players. Unfortunately, work-schedules of one of the players made it impossible for them to remain in the game, and so in order to remove his character, he was killed in a demonstration of how powerful railguns are in the setting, when a 40mm tungsten projectile went clear through the Donnager, venting compartments to space. This also allowed Naomi and Amos to show their expertise in repairing the breach in freefall.

@remo272 жыл бұрын
@@ranialian8537 Zero G and lower gravity aren't the same thing. People live on the Space Station for months , in some cases nearly a year, and suffer no permanent damage. And even if gravity below 'some level' is more harmful than beneficial we don't really know what that cutoff is. Let's take pregnancy as an example. I don't think its possible in Zero G. However, it MIGHT be possible without bad effects on the moon (1/6 earth gravity) or Mars (1/3), indeed, it might be better for baby or mama at one or both those gravitational regimes. Or worse. Or still impossible. We DO NOT KNOW and this is because all the humans in space have only had experience in 3 gravitational regimes, and in 2 of the three no pregnancies have occurred: The moon 1/6 G, total time spent on the moon in all the Apollo trips combined is, if I recall correctly 8 days, and 4 different crews, with only one or two of our astronauts ever going to the moon twice, and the Space Station which is basically 0G. There was supposed to be a centrifugal module added to the Space Station to study the effects of all sorts of gravitational regimes (centrifuges acting as gravity simulators) but even though the thing was produced for a few tens of millions of dollars it never got off the ground, and I forget why. The third 'regime' is Earth, of course, which has ONE Earth gravity and in which all our babies have been born. There is no physical reason I am aware of, however, that states that any degree of lower gravity is always harmful.

With so much military jargon and throw the Belter language on top of that I'm surprised you can follow it so well. This episode got me hooked. We have our crew, minus SHed. Poor Shed. Great combat action and great spaceship battle as well. But if you have any questions we will be happy to make things a bit clearer. What the guy that Miller was looking for Bizi Betiko, the real one was doing a race of sorts called "slingshotting". You just fire your engine toward a planet and then shut it down, then using thusters, you use the gravity well of a planet to speed you up and break away, heading in another course toward another planet. If you get too close to the planet, you will burn up in the atmosphere or crash into it. Thats how he died. The body that Miller found was a data broker who faked his ID when you would can for it and it would come up different every time. Havalock is alive because he got very lucky. His heart was missed. "Scuttle a ship" Is a navel term meaning that they're going to sink it or in this case self destruct it so it doesn't fall into enemy hands. I first heard the term in the movie The Hunt for Red October. Yeah, escaping from the destruction of two ships will look fishy. As far as why people go to the Belt, it's kinda like an opportunity to do something. We're set 300 years in the future, so the Belters have had generations to work and build. IT's a blue collar sort of life. On Earth, most people don't work and are waiting for something to open up, so if you can go out to the Belt, you can sort of do something. On Mars, I'm sure they're very strict with their immigration so they don't get over burdened with having too big of a population to stretch resources... You're doing great! More people came and they had kids while they were there and after two years they felt detached from Earth and had another way of life so they felt they should be their own country. Once the technology existed to travel the solar system we needed people to extract those resources. They are like people that work in coal mines. Due to low G and two hundred years their bodies changed they developed their own culture and language but relied on Earth and Mars critical resources you could only get from actual planet’s especially earth like dirt to grow stuff.

People went to the belt because there were jobs there. Earth is so overpopulated that the unemployment rate is somewhere around 80% and has been for some time. They have Universal Basic Income (just called "Basic" in the show, as in the phrase "living on Basic") but it really isn't enough to live comfortably, just enough to barely survive. I don't know whether it was ever revealed when Basic started, so it's possible that the people who originally went to the belt had the option to live on Basic and wanted more out of life, or if they just needed a job to survive. The contracts were probably temporary at first, maybe 10 years, but they'd have had children out there who would then be unable to live on Earth so they stayed. The Belters went there because they had to, the Martians went to Mars because they're idealists who want to turn Mars into a better version of Earth.

People colonized the Belt for resources. Most who went went to escape Earth. Each is overcrowded, 30 BILLION people, no jobs, little food, and scarce resources. Most people on Earth live on "Basic." Free necessities, but *only* necessities, and only the bare minimum needed to survive, and sometimes not even that. An Earther's other choice would be to live and survive "unregistered," in which case, not only do you receive nothing as far as assistance, but it's criminal, so there is a vast thriving criminal underground supplying black marked goods to the unregistered masses living in abject poverty. Plus, Earth's environment is virtually destroyed. Massive various scrubbers clean the air, but it's not enough. The oceans smell like sewers. Earth is a hot mess. Those who originally colonized Mars and the Belt, and those who are able to leave Earth now, are actually considered fortunate by many still on Earth.

Anyway, the player who created Shed had a change in his schedule -- work, or something -- and that meant he couldn't play in the game, any longer. So, Franck killed off Shed to add drama to the close-quarters battle on the Donnager. Shed's fate, in the show, matched the character's death, in the game.) Look up the moon, Phoebe, the place that had the station referred to, a couple of times. It's a real place, and the authors picked it deliberately, because it really is kinda special, and that makes it a clue. :) The dead data-broker had a device implanted that interferes with every attempt to use electronics to identify him, and feeds false information. So, the broker's cybernetics concealed his identity, and he used plastic surgery kinda-sorta look like a lot of people. Miller and his old partner, Octavia, discussed that while in the morgue.

Best and worst death of The Expanse was from the 5th member of the Roci crew. Like that was so unexpected

I am so happy you guys are doing a reaction to this series. When it ended recently I decided I was going to watch the whole thing all over again. Now that you're reacting to it, this is a better way for me to do it! Based on having followed you guys for a long time now I know you're going to fall in love with these characters. And on a side note, I'm going to take the opportunity to plug 'Station Eleven' one more time. It's a one-season series and I know you guys will love it. But back to The Expanse. I'm going to share a little trivia with you. I'm attaching the link to the music video for the 2006 song "Let Me Think About It" by Ida Corr vs Fedde Le Grand. See if you can spot Dominique Tipper (Naomi Nagata in The Expanse) among the girls underneath all those afros long before she became the famous Naomi Nagata. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKrMnIGehc1spJo

Ah, poor Shed. Unfortunately, he was the only one who didn't serve a critical role on the crew. He wasn't a pilot, engineer, soldier or leader. As we learned, he wasn't even a real medic, and at this point, medical technology does pretty much all the work for them, which is why he was able to fake it. I do wish he was around longer though.

The Expanse is based off of an RPG that the book writers played. Shed's character died in the game and thus the books and thus the show.

In the Show it isn't clear, but in the books the clearly say that they scuttle the ship, because the information they have on your Computers could win the war if an enemy gets it.

Scuttle = self destruction. Destroy your own ship to keep the enemy from getting it. As for Shed and his lost head...pretty shocking moment, yes? Well, Shed was never built to last. Before becoming a show...this was a series of books...and before that a role playing game. However, one game player had to drop out (moved away or something) of the game. Basically Shed is representing that person. So, Shed was always bound to be dead

The Sun (star), 3rd "circle" around the Sun is Earth's orbit around the Sun, 4th is Mars, "circle" between Mars and Jupiter (5th "circle") is the (asteroid) Belt, 6th is Saturn, etc. Part of the Sol System inside of asteroid belt is called the Inner System (Mars, Earth, etc) and so: the Inners (MCR, UN). Belters live in the Belt. Part of the Sol System outside of the Belt (Jupiter, Saturn etc) is called the Outer System, where Belters also live, but practically entire Sol System is Inner-controled, and so: OPA (Outer Planets Alliance). Moon i.e. Satellite (Luna) is orbiting Earth, same as Phoebe(where Phoebe Station is) is orbiting Saturn together with other Saturn's moons (Titan, Iapetus and many other), other planets also have moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Europa, Io Jupiter's moons) etc. Ceres is (biggest) asteroid in asteroid belt i.e. Ceres Station in the Belt. The Canterbury was on constant route Saturn (taking ice) to Ceres (delivering ice) and back. The MCRN (Martian Congressional Republic Navy) Donnager, dispatched from Mars or the Belt, got destroyed somewhere between Jupiter and Saturn (If I remember well) on route to Phoebe, or heading back from Phoebe (I can't recall)
