Jim Holden what have yo started? Remember The Cant! Things are starting to get serious on Earth and Mars as war might begin. Because of a mysterious video Jim sent out to everyone, thinking the Martian Navy blew up the Cant. However it is looking like it may be a third party who is looking to start a war, but why?

At the beginning of the episode, when the Martians were touching the necks of their captives, they were reading chips that are apparently inserted in people as a matter of course to allow for easy ID.

Interestingly, technology like that is a shared resource among all the factions of the Solar system. Whatever relays and repeaters they use for System-wide communication, even with hand controllers, must be common as well.

This show has a lot to say about the power of material conditions to shape people, and the law of intended consequences regarding the events that spiral off their choices.

So many fun details in this show. Havelock (Miller's partner) put their boss' name down on the Mormon's sign up sheet for the Super Fun Mormon Comedy Hour.

The end is a great shocking moment. The Expanse is great for the sudden hits from out of nowhere.

Yep. Eventually the show runners get so good they stick cliffhangers in the middle of episodes. Or in the last 10 seconds after resolving everything. It's not a comfortable show...

Lt Lopez: "You had no way of knowing that at the time." Holden: "But I was right!" That's a clue to how Holden lives his life. He does what he thinks is right without necessarily having all the facts. Something that might not be clear: In the first episode, Miller remarked, "No law on Ceres, just cops." Most of the stations and activity in the Belt are assets owned by Earth corporations, and nearly all Belters are workers for those corporations. They are not under the law of either Earth or Mars, the corporate stations are not under the jurisdiction of any governments, so for over a hundred years the corporations have created the policies that rule the lives of the Belters, and the "cops" are just hired security for the corporations. The Outer Planets Alliance is similar in many ways to the Palestinian Liberation Organization or the Irish Republican Army. It has politicians, ideologists, thugs, hard-core violent revolutionaries, and ordinary working people for whom nobody is speaking except the OPA. The next episode is the one that normally "hooks" people who are still on the fence about watching The Expanse.

"Palestinian Liberation Organization" is such a desperate stretch so you can try an appear "current." The PLO is undeniably a terrorist organization and its leaders directly endorse the genocide of the Jews. Not a splinter group, not one faction. The leaders, former and current. Sinn Féin - IRA connections is a far more apt comparison, especially if you point the lens at Irish Revolution, civil war, and The Troubles. A genuinely factional relationship where one is a legitimate political group that had splinters of paramilitary and terrorist groups. Sinn Féin exists today as one of the main political parties of Ireland. PLO may have started as something that seemed noble from the outside, but today they are run and controlled by people that openly support Arab genocide of the Jews, and have been for decades.

As a writer, "remember the Cant" is a great mnemonic for creating complex conflict by playing Kantian and Utilitarian ethics off each other. The initial decision that the distress call was probably a trap so it should be ignored was a great example of utilitarian ethics, while Jim's decision to register the distress call was following Kant and acting on principle. There's plenty of room for either side of the divide to be the right one in a story, or for both to be partially right and partially wrong.

The thing that makes this show so good, is that there are very few 'bad guys' in the moustache twirling villian style. Almost everyone is doing what they are doing because they think that its the best for humanity or at least their planet or people. Holden's parents, is because earth is hugely over populated with 30 billion people. So land is a huge premium. Holdens parents have 22 acre farm in Montana, and because they are all his parents, all 8 of them, he would inherit the whole thing, ikeeping it together as they wanted.

The men who "crucified" Miller's partner Havelock were members of The Griegas that Miller talked about when the pair of them were rousting Diogo Herari and the other water thieves.

That's thing about sci-fi done right: it speaks to us about us without speaking about us. And The Expanse does that exactly right.

If you can make it through this episode, you’ll land at CQB, the episode where someone steps on the gas, hard. Brakes get tapped a bit in season 4, but the slow start of the show is deceptive because it picks up speed, fast.
@jfu6413
@jfu6413 8 ай бұрын
I hear that a lot, that season 4 is too slow or the worst season. But in my opinion, it’s actually the camera pulling back showing all the hidden connecting strings laid in place the past 3 seasons. It’s setting up the whirlwind the is to come.

I wish there was nobody today being cut off from water. It really does seem prophetic, doesn't it? The Expanse seems very much a natural progression from the inequality we see today.

Jim's situation isn't normal on Earth, uncommon is probably the right word for it. He was genetically engineered with DNA from all 8 of his parents, but was of course only carried by one of the mothers, as he said here "Well, Mother Louise had the widest hips, so..." One thing that most people don't fully get is the little pills the Martian Interrogator took one of. Those are focus drugs, a bit of Martian medicine that do exactly what their name suggest. He was taking one to be better able to read small details such as facial movements and body language, to try and discern whether Holden and crew were telling the truth or not.
@Basstrainer
@Basstrainer 8 ай бұрын
It’s also so all of his parents could claim generational rights to the land they own together in Montana. Earth is over populated and there’s not much land left to own. Being fortunate enough to own land not wanting to die without an heir is part of the reason he has 8 parents
@gazzamanazza4pm

@@Basstrainer Yeah, though I didn't want to specify that detail since it's technically a spoiler for early on in Season 2. Thankfully though I think she's at around that point on Patreon so it wouldn't be spoiling far ahead if at all, and at least it's only a small detail.

Spoiler-free exploration of Holden's genetic diversity : As you could probably see, having 8 parents seems rather weird to even the technologically advanced Martians... if it were a normal thing, they might not have brought it up. What they did bring up, however, was the possibility that it was a ploy to exploit regulations on land ownership and inheritance, while insinuating that the parents had been a politically radical group in the past... Looking for reasons Holden might have to destroy his own ship. The pill that the Martian interrogator swallowed increases his ability to discern small changes in expression that might give clues as to what line of questioning is stressful to his subject. He was basically exploring to see what he could shake loose, while not knowing a goddamn thing. My point is that, no, genetic engineering of this type is not a normal thing. Not unheard of, but still rare. The next episode is when most viewers get hooked for the duration... I've been watching science-fiction for over 6 decades, and when I tell you this show is really good, I ain't kidding! They didn't go out and film this in space, but sometimes it will seem like they must have! You will laugh, you will want to cry, and you most certainly will want to throw things... just don't hit the screen! ;-]

One of the reasons that Martian interrogator mentioned Holden's unusual genetics and family history is so that we, the viewers, can learn about it as part of the puzzle that is Holden's character and part of the general world-building regarding the socio-economic, technological and environmental state of Earth. Another aspect of it is that in any "lie detection" type interrogation, you need to start with questions to which you do know the answers already in order to get a baseline observation for truthful responses.

James Holden is indeed the product of genetically engineering a zygote from the genetic material from 8 different parents. It isn't a common practice, but it does happen. I will not spoil the reason why it happens.

The show never gives full details, but per the books Jim's parents are actually four different couples who combined into a legally married group of eight. The show will eventually explain why they decided to do this.

most likely poor gain staging and/or the first thing the mic is plugged into is sub-par.

It was present in all her Band of Brother videos too. Sounds like the gain is too high for her mix recording, maybe because she's kinda soft spoken so it's gotta be bumped up to catch her voice? Idk but hopefully she can figure it out.

@@Krynn72 pretty sure it's an anti-copyright bot countermeasure, as was suggested by another poster. The next video has a similar noise overlay, but it varies. In other words, it isn't constant, as a setting in the mix would produce.
