To add to this, yes, the ship was designed to take Mormons off to a distant star which would take thousands of years so they would need gravity for the journey for survival and breeding. Plus you need to be able to explore the planets in your new star system and if you've lived on a ship for 11,000 years in zero g and humans can survive such a thing like that long term... You'd need to have been exposed to gravity to not get crushed on them like the Belters feel on earth but it would be even more extreme as at least belters get gravity from smaller rocks like Ceres.

@@garethlawton5278 Crazy thing is, if you were to accelarate at 1g for the entire trip to Tau Ceti (which is where the nauvoo was going), It would take the passengers roughly 5 years to get there, and the actual elapsed time from Earth would be around 14 years. But Im assuming they wouldnt be accelerating at 1g, more like ~0.3 which would take 11 years and 17 years respectively. But even more liklely, it would only accelerate for short period at the beginning and near the end as well.

@@The_Shaft one has to assume that, even with Epstein drives, the fuel requirement for a ship that massive for.a journey that long, with no refuelling stops along the way makes it unfeasible to do 1g or 1/3g halfway, flip and the same deceleration. So the solution is to coast for much of the way and instead have spin "gravity" inside that huge drum, and take a lot longer to get there.

The Behemoth (Navou) had a drum to simulate gravity for the long trip to another star. But it hadn't been tested yet. This is one of my favorite episodes, mainly because it solidified Drummer's status as a boss AND it revealed Ashford's true character (and made him a favorite).

Ashford told Diogo in the last ep that he watched his child burn. Notice his burn scars. This ep he said he used to sing his space shanty to his daughter. Some great scenes between Ashford and Drummer. There are a lot of firsts in this show. What other sci fi film or show has someone going around with a shop vac cleaning up floating blood in the aftermath of a disaster? Those dead people in the corridor who looked like they were standing were floating with their mag boots still attached to the floor.

Everything following the grenade from Simu Liu is a change in the 'speed limit'. A reaction to something breaking the previous speed limit. The explosion in Naomi's ship is slowed because of zero g and the speed limit change. Every ship has been 'caught' because of the speed limit change. The Martian drop pod was unaffected because it was stationary. So long as it doesn't return above the new speed limit, it will be able to return. Melba (Clarissa) was going to kill Tilly until the sudden deceleration accomplished that for Melba. "Why some and not others." Any ship traveling above the new speed limit is caught very suddenly. Those individuals inside who were secured or strapped down, like Anna, were safer when the ships were 'caught'. Those in motion remained in motion, like the belter from the episode 'Delta-V' splattered against his console compared to the ship itself. They could not possibly have planned for a limited speed that would require a seven month journey from the nucleus of this space back to the ring gate. As for the Behemoth. It was the Nauvoo, a ship designed to travel several hundred years to a new star system. A circular vessel with the ability to generate its own centrifugal gravity would help those travelling along the journey. While the missle pods tacked on after the fact are not as reliable, because it wasn't designed to be used as a warship, the drum designed to generate centrifugal gravity (like it was designed to do) is reliable. They are fortunate that such a capability will help all those in the ring space that cannot get back to the ring gate with injuries that require gravity to heal. "We don't know what it is, pokey pokey." Similar to a monkey interacting with a microwave will only view the microwave as a light source when the door is closed and you turn it on (a reference The Investigator made to Holden); these humans are 'playing' with the ring space without truly understanding its true purpose. The end of this season is probably my favorite part of the entire show/series. Not just for what the characters learn about the protomolecule, but for what it sets up for the seasons/books to come.

Two kinds of gravity, 1) thrust gravity, when ships are traveling through space they accelerate then flip and burn, then decelerate to stop. They have gravity from both. 2) Spin gravity. Your ship spins to create gravity. The thrust is too low, for thrust gravity.

Yes, Tilly is still alive. Havelock lived, Sabine lived, so Tilly lives. Amos noted Naomi's change of hair. Background tidbit: In the novels, Naomi was written to be shy with a psychological quirk of hiding behind her long curls. They dropped that quirk (and a very good thing they did...it would have been politically incorrect to give a black woman a psychological quirk over her hair), but they gave it a nod by having Naomi change her hair style every season. In the book, Anna was high on pain killers and also very angry, which is why she took after Clarissa. But on the way, she started to come down and wonder what the hell she was doing. Do you remember when Drummer was just Johnson's unnamed second in command in the background?

Remember, the Nauvoo was a generation ship that was to fly for over 100 yrs to get to its destination. It needed to be able to grow new food for the Mormons. The inner surface of the drum was meant to be covered in soil to create farmland. Spinning the drum would have allowed them to farm that land with both people and machines on the inner surface. In the book, Anna is given a huge dose of painkillers by Tilly (who is a much older woman who doesn't die) and she is basically tripping balls as she goes after Clarissa in a built up rage. Halfway through that trip the drugs start to wear off and she starts to wonder what in the Hell she is doing going after a murderer at all. It is one of the funniest parts of Abadon's Gate.

In the episodes I have not said anything about Klaes Ashford, but now is the time. The conflict here is not all that Ashford wants to take over the ship for Dawes. It is a generation gap thing. He truly believes in the idea of a proud Belter Nation, not just factions, disciplined enough to stand up to Mars and Earth, strong enough to fight if need be. He KNOWS Drummer is Captain, but being an experienced older man however a little trapped in his old ways of thinking from being "The Ghost Knife". Ashford has transferred a bit of his love for his dead child to Camina. This is another reason Ashford meddles, He sees Drummer as the perfect future Belter citizen, but feels she lacks the some of the finer points of command. So "dad" meddles.
@davebcf1231
@davebcf1231 Жыл бұрын
It's the exact opposite of that. Ashford is the one who sees that belters can't be stuck in their old ways if they hope to be seen as equals to Earth and Mars, and Drummer is the one who is very resistant to change. It's the flip on the older generation being stuck in their ways and the younger generation being more progressive trope. We see it from the start when Drummer wanted to space the drug dealer but Ashford stopped her and gave her the talk about acting with greatness.

If you've seen Interstellar, the Behemoth is like "Cooper Station" that you see at the end of that film. The Mormons were going to live on the inside of the ship for hundreds/thousands of years while it travelled to another star and the drum would have spun to give the 'settlers' gravity to grow crops and livestock to keep them alive while on the journey. The Belters took it before it got its layer of soil, so the inside is just a big empty space with 'flat' metal surfaces that will become a 360 degree floor once the drum starts spinning.

The Behemoth was the Nauvoo first. When Miller went to look at it S2E3, the Mormon explained that the ship would get up to speed and cut thrust to save reaction mass. The ship has a drum (spin habitat) bc it was originally for the Mormons to thrive in the 100+ year journey to colonize another star. Honestly, your "I don't know what this does. Should we poke it or leave it or exploit it?" Basically is the plot of the first 3-4 seasons of the expanse. And I'm sure someone already said it, but the behemoth has spin gravity because it was intended to be a generation ship traveling for a hundred years. At some point they would eventually reach their maximum speed after which they would have no acceleration gravity anymore. Most ships in the system don't have that issue because their trips are short enough the can constantly accelerate towards their destination then flip and decelerate until they reach it, maintaining thrust gravity the whole time.

This is one of my favorite episodes if only for the interaction between Ashford and Drummer. The Ashford character in the series is way better than in the book. As for Anna she's a little high on meds otherwise she would have never taken an EV suit and followed Melba. You learn this in the books. So there are 2 kinds of gravity a ship can thrust and spin. The Navoo/Behemoth is a generation ship it doesn't have the fuel for constant thrust gravity for it's long journey. So they built the drum section in it to spin so they could have some gravity on their long journey.

You said for the last episode that you had been having a 'day', so I think you aren't properly grasping the scale of events inside the Ring. It's all right. But if you have time, I'd take a quick moment to go back and watch the last half of the last episode over again and pay close attention to what happens and how suddenly it happens when Simu detonates the grenade. In the moment that the Lieutenant got grabbed by invisible force and disassembled to become proto-spackle to fix the divot in the floor he made, all of the ships slammed to a sudden and massive halt all at once because the speed limit changed, and the purple 'cyst' glow grabbed them all and began to pull them into the center nucleus like it had done with the belter ship, the missiles, and the probes Mars launched to sort out what the exact Speed Limit was originally. I watched you watch it, but you failed to react as expected in the moment, so I really think you were just tired from your hell day and didn't really grok what was going on. As for "what are they doing now?" the agenda is suddenly "Survival" for everyone on the inside. The support ships that were going below the New Speed Limit are still free to move, but they're too small, and it would now at new speeds take 7 months to get back to the Ring, and there's not enough room on board for them to carry 7 months of food and water for even one person, let alone a whole crew with passengers. It's all right. You were having a bad day. Pour another raspberry liqueur and go rewatch the last bit. It'll make the rest make more sense once you see all the massive ships slamming to a halt simultaneously.

hmmm .... ok, first "no coming back from the unknown"? ... 😛 ... Is that what they told the first guy to ride a rocket into space? (ok, he probably died, but the next guy?) ... the first ones to the moon? ... the first into challanger deep? ... lets just leave that there, but say that, like Apollo 13, things can go wrong, but you work the problem like there is a solution. As to why some were killed and some weren't when the speed limit changed, you are right that impalement would be a factor, but also where you were and what was around you when it happened ... in a car, if you get rear ended, if you are sitting forward whiplash is likely, but if you are sitting back with your head against to or close to the headrest, maybe not. The ships were going a lot faster when they stopped than a car. Anna was in her bunk with a gel mattress under her, so ... yeah. Lastly, the Behemoth, as the Nauvoo, was built to take the Mormons to another star system. It would not have had fuel enough to provide thrust "gravity" the whole way (which is the gravity you see on most of the ships on this show) so they would have been on the float for a long time (lifetimes?). Humans don't do well in zero G even without wounds, so they have the drum to provide spin "gravity" for the physical and mental health of the travelers. As Fred stole the ship before it could be finished, it never had been tested. This episode is great. The dynamic between Drummer and Ashford alone is story telling at or near it's best. The only note I reallly didn't like was the continued fanaticism of the martian marines. It's not that I haven't met people like that, but to think that an elite soldier would disobey an order to kill an unarmed prisoner already in custody ... one who might have intel ... I don't know, I just think they would have washed out of the system a long time ago. Anyway .... ❤❤

You had a question about gravity. There are 3 kinds of gravity. All mass has gravity. The more mass, the more gravity. That's why the moon has less gravity than the Earth. There's acceleration gravity. As long as you're constantly going faster, you have gravity. Stop accelerating, even if you're going 1000 mph, and you have no gravity. Decelerate and you have gravity in the other direction. Then there's centrifugal force, which is the force directed outward from a spinning axis. So when the drum spins, if you're on the axis side of a wall or bulkhead, you're pressed against that surface. I know I oversimplified all of the Newtonian physics, but it's kind of boring. 🙂

Absolutely right. I was over simplifying. You've got to hand it to the writers. No magic "artificial" gravity, and the ships have their decks perpendicular to their longitudinal axis. They also flip the ships 180° for a decelerating burn so they're not peeling crewmen off the ceiling every time they slow. The attention to detail is amazing.
