4:47 With his _"farm like primitives"_ line Ashford probably meant that hydroponics would have been much more efficient than a giant spinning drum filled with dirt you had to till, and farm, and whatnot. And, as a bonus, the equipment needed for said tillage and farming wouldn't be crushing him and Drummer right now. Of course, though, then we wouldn't have had this awesome Ashford and Drummer sequence, which is one of my favourites in the series, so good on the Mormons for their inefficiency, I say.

Not quite. Remember the running joke throughout the series about how Inners hate Belter food, and how Alex's lasagna wasnt made with real cheese? Belter food is all synthetic. Ashford has never even had real food to know how much better it is.

The farming gear is also meant for the planet when they reach their destination star. So if you are going to take up the space you may as well use the hardware as much as possible. This ship could fit hundreds of thousands of people. Remember that it would be several generations, on that ship, traveling to the closest star. A lot more crops can be planted on the inside of the drum than could fit in hydroponics bays. They have hydroponics too but mostly for items that need to be "formed" instead of grown. The Mormons also embrace their past as its their older way of life that they want to replicate on a new planet.
@mbpoblet4 жыл бұрын
@@jrich749 Plus, I imagine, it'd have given them something to do during the trip (there's also the multiple wives and whatnot, but I imagine that'd have had to be heavily regulated, as you do _not_ want a population explosion in such a closed environment, so farming it is). And we saw how large scale hydroponics ended up in Ganymede when the -dominoes- _mirrors_ started falling; but Ashford doesn't seem like the agrarian type, and to be fair said _"primitive farming equipment"_ was in the process of killing him and Drummer at the time, so his reaction is understandable, I'd say.

@@LINKedup101 I give a lot of credit to the actor portraying Ashford, David Sthraithairn. The camera loves him. I'd speculate that the mannerisms and voice he brought to the screen may have led to the expansion of the role his character plays in this story. The same can be said for Cara Gee. Overall the acting in this show is superb all across the board, perhaps the result of actors all of whom appear to really love the story and the show. Many times you see performances that have just been phoned in. The last season of Game of Thrones is an example of that sort of just-going-through-the-motions sort of acting. Everybody just wanted to get it over with and to no longer be involved in the production of a sloppy visual bowel movement.
@kennethkalls40314 жыл бұрын
@@Braincleaner The writing is a little better than what you depict. With benefit of hindsight, or with benefit of the facts you as a viewer have learned that may not be known to the characters, a character make a decision. They are not stupid ones. Most of the time, they are brilliant and inventive. As the story unfolds, they are proven to have been wrong decisions, anyway, when compared to the decisions made by other characters. That does not make the wrong decisions even slightly "stupid", although we, as viewers, with our more complete knowledge of the facts, can enjoy the sense of exasperation that comes when we see a good character making a moral and intelligent decision that we know is nonetheless completely wrong.

26:32 Bear in mind that Clarissa grew up watching her father praise her sister (who in her eyes did _absolutely nothing_ to deserve it) while ignoring _her_ constant efforts to be the perfect daughter... in her mind avenging him has become her last chance to get his approval (which _is_ completely irrational, sure, but she's clearly a very damaged person, and I'd blame her father more than her for that)... and after all the _"sacrifices"_ (from her point of view) she's made, killing Holden is the _only_ reason to live she's got left. She _is_ one dimensional, sure, but, in my opinion, _justifiably_ so (from a writing and psychological point of view, not from a _rational_ one, of course).

20:06. California is a very strange place. On a normal, day-to-day basis, the people here are insular and borderline-paranoid, the driver's are rude and careless, all too willing to chance death and mutual carnage for the sake of gaining a momentary advantage of even just a couple of seconds. Who can change lanes before the other. Which one can nab the parking space first. There's a general attitude here of "every man for himself." But the ground moves sideways from time to time, knocking everything to pieces and splitting power and water and traffic control systems asunder. Normally, Californians are assholes, but after an earthquake, we become the most careful, cooperative, mutually-forgiving people on Earth. I guess we all just need to be handed unsubtle reminders of our relative insignificance, now and again. An aid to perspective. Good for the soul. (It's good to see the earthquake response survives into our spacefaring future.) Klaes Ashford = Klass Actford, in my mind. Once a pirate, a 2-dimensional criminal, but now he seems to be genuinely striving to establish a positive legacy, to create the world his daughter would have grown up in, had she lived. I think he's seeking her approval, just as Miller sought Julie's long after her death. Her approval, and, perhaps, her forgiveness.

One thing I love about The Expanse is you get answers but they're just vague enough that it allows your imagination to fill in the gaps. One thing I HATE about the Expanse is that the answers mostly just lead to more questions (in a good way). :) Unlike Lost (which basically just throws a ton of wierdness against the wall and sees what sticks), The Expanse is planned out. Things happen for a reason even though you don't understand at the moment. This show is worth a rewatch to see where they seed information along the whole series.

Regarding Annas decision making process to chase down Clarissa herself, it explained this a little better in the book but only briefly alluded to it in the show. That euphoric look on her face when she injected herself with drugs. She was high as a kite on pain killers, and in the book she didnt start really knowing what was going on until she was halfway to the Rocinante in a space suit.

Damn! I've seen Cat crying during those emotional scenes which reminded me how it felt, so now I have tears in my eyes... The Disaster. The show brings one of its strenghts once again dealing so... completely with the terrible fallout of a fleet wide event. So many series at this moment would simply carry on with minor time and attention given to the human cost of events from the previous episode. But not this one. Brilliant. The Belters. In the second part of the season political back stabbing, intrigues and rivalry is mostly replaced with the question of nation building. The Belt is a new political entity and starts from the beginning and that means a lot of to do and huge possibilities to screw things up. It is just like after several key decades in the XXth century - the end of the 1st WW and beginning (or resurrection) of many countries in central and eastern Europe, the de-colonisation period from late 1940s to... even now or events past 1989 and the end of the Soviet Union. Not every single country which appeared or reappeared (see Armenia - one of the oldest cultures on the planet after all) on the map after each of those events/ongoing series of events survived and many still struggle - also in Europe. This process in the Expanse won't be painless and will continue in later seasons. Ashford. The guy is quite a character isn't he? A born, raised and hardened Belter but life gave his wisdom he didn't waste - he understands how it works and how much important symbolism can be - that includes the trivial stuff such as the uniforms for the new Belter navy. After all a nation of rock hoppers is a naval entity - it has to be - and army was always one of the best tools for a unification. He is also a person who can make the right decisions when the time comes - he reminds me Commander Adama from Battlestar Galactica. A leader with flaws, but a leader you can respect. Even as an opponent. Navoo. The ship also has a... character arc and it is not over yet. The detail about 'farming like primitives' is an interesting observation given it is spoken by Ashford - a Belter - there are no open skies, no real farms in the Belt. To a Belter food is something grown in a factory-like structures and animals are a curiosity, pets or vermin. Notice the episode in this very season when Navoo was reclaimed by Drummer's Tycho fleet. There was a second after the deck of Navoo was boarded when she looked at all those paintings with happy people with animals, riding horses and generally enjoying a life on a... planet - she couldn't understand what it really is because how could she? Naomi's return. It is such a short(-ish), lovely scene gaining in impact thanks to all the previous episodes in all previous seasons. I love it about this season. Cheers!

I just recently finished the book the second half of this season is based on and it's fascinating how different it is from the show while at the same time the story beats are all there. It tells the story in a very different way. Different characters, different events but somehow ends up feeling like the same story. It's very well done. I enjoyed reading (listening to, actually) the book a bit more because the stories are different enough that I really didn't know how it was going to go. It also gets into the motivations of the characters since it's told from their point of view. Clarissa is one of the POV characters and the book does make her character motivations much clearer. It's hard to do that in 7 episodes of television and I think they did as well as they could have.b

Amos is a man of zero subcontext. When he says, simply, "Okay," he means, completely, "Okay." Anna was hopped up on medication (you saw her injecting herself) and was very, very, very angry at Melba. When we first met Ashford, he was talking about Belter unification and rule of law. We thought at the time that was subterfuge. But in the dialog with Drummer while they were trapped, we learned Ashford really believed that the Belt must become a respectable nation taking its place as equals to Mars and Earth...so his offer of the Behemoth's gravity to everyone then came with surprise but understanding. Be ready to freeze the frame quickly in the early minutes of the next episode for some interesting background technical information.

Melissa Mao's motivation is perfectly clear. She cannot see her own father as having any fault in the circumstances that led to the complete destruction of the entire Mao family and the loss of the solar system's greatest private fortune. She, instead, has arrived at the conclusion that James Holden, more than any other person, is responsible, and therefore needs to pay the price. On top of that, Jules-Pierre was shown to think little or nothing of Melissa, describing her as capable of nothing more than planning a party. On a personal level, she is desparate to prove her worth to her father. I don't have a problem with Melissa's behavior. The story has provided a perfectly plausible explanation for her obsession with avenging her family, as long as she continues to believe James Holden is the bad guy in the story of the fall of the house of Mao. We, as viewers of the whole story, realize that is not true. That should not cause us to question or be baffled by Mellissa's behavior. She doesn't know the truth.

The Expanse "uses" this Alien-nucleus-bubble environment to tell stories about humanity and how humans would deal with it So when you "dont care" about this aspect than you might have a bit wrong expectation of the Expanse Of course it is exiting when we get to know (little) more about the ancient-alien stuff, but this isnt and wont be the main theme of the series

We’re sorry if it at all seemed like we didn’t care about the human aspect of the series during the reaction - because we really, really do! But we’re also very intrigued about the overall plot and all the alien/sci-fi stuff 😉
