You were right! Burn Gorman was in The Dark Knight Rises. He is always great and usually plays slimy people and most folks know him from Torchwood or Pacific Rim.

The relationship between Amos and Clarissa in the books is one of my favorite stories in all of fiction. They didn't get all of it in the tv show, but I'm glad they tried.

Appreciate your intro discussion. 😘 One of many things the show does so well, is to show how people, and our perceptions of them, can change… (kinda like real life eh?) On to season4 ! 🚀

There's a youtube channel called BPS Space that might be of interest if you or your son don't know of it already. On Clarisa, it's tough, but she did commit a number of crimes and this show does have consequences for characters. Just like the present, the legal system in the Expanse is flawed, but it's not going to release someone who blew up a ship and committed a number of murders.

Naomi walking off the Rocinante onto a planet for the first time was so well done. I like that you caught James holding Amos back from helping her. Such good storytelling.

A lot of people didn't like this season when it first came out. I assume because it isn't about war like the previous seasons were, but about exploration and figuring stuff out, and that's precisely why I love it so much. That's not to say I don't love the _rest_ of the series, or even that it's my favourite season, just that I think the people who called this season boring are flat out _wrong._ It's nice that they were able to cram in a bit of the Amos/Clarissa relationship (non-romantic) that we got a lot more of in the epilogue of book 3.

In the video you spoke about your son's love for space, and his dream to go there one day, that's a beautiful dream to have, I know you will inspire him to reach for the stars. I'm not sure if he will like it, but there's a great movie called "The Astronaut Farmer" that you could both watch together. I think you might like it. As always Imon, it's been a pleasure.

There are lots of ways to get "into space". Encourage anything that your son enjoys and has a talent for. You don't have to directly pursue a "space" course or go to a camp. Maths, programming, engineering, biology, psychology, geology, materials science, medicine, etc. Physics and chemistry are good, of course, and perhaps more likely what you will find in a standard school curriculum than some of those other things I listed, but I'd say to try to concentrate on the "applied" end of those subjects rather the theoretical. If there are any extra-curricular clubs that mess with 3D printing, building models, anything like that, encourage participation in those too. If you ever take vacations near NASA or associated sites (JPL in California, for example) check if there are any public tours. Maybe they are only 1 day a week, but I know that some of those places do them, and it's somewhat of a step up from just visiting the space part of a science museum.

I think it is always overlooked that the rest of the Roci crew are for the first time walking on the surface of a planet, other than Earth, where they can do so without donning a special protective suit and carry their own air supply.

@@Yesquire0 To that extent, yes, they should have all experienced a certain level of wonder. But in particular, Alex should have had virtually as much trouble as Naomi. He should have had as much trouble as we saw the Martian sailors having when Bobbie landed on earth. Alex was just a sailor as they were...he hadn't had the 1g training the Marines had.
@Yesquire0
@Yesquire0 Ай бұрын
@@kirkdarling4120 Maybe even more, insofar as we have never seen Alex take the drug treatments so painfully endured by Naomi, but your point is a good one. I think the showrunners had only prepped us for Naomi's dramatic first experience with full gravity and an open sky above her head, and that's what they went with. Maybe Alex just threw up a little in the back of his throat.

With regard to Clarissa, the thing we have to remember is that she was not raised like Amos. Clarissa had a "soft" life...she wasn't raised to be a killer, she was raised to be nice and plan parties. A monster is not who she actually is, that's not what she had been raised to be. Avasarala is justifiably afraid of the Protomolecule...she had the front-row seat watching Eros plunge toward Earth. But as Nancy Gao had said, hundreds of probes had brought back nothing of Protomolecule activity on the Ring planets. Rather than simply stonewalling, Avasarala should have set up a program to vigorously explore the Ring planets to show that she understood the frustration being felt by people like Nico....while still being cautious. I disagree with Drummer that the Belter generations who establish life on planets will have forgotten that they had been Belters. Planet-adapted people can always go into space. They would probably be more like the Ganymede refugees..."Belters" only because the rock they had been born on had no atmosphere, but in their hearts they were Belters still. They would probably always have spacewalk rituals to earn their "rockhopper tats." Drummer is the kind of Belter who was born and raised on a ship, a subtle but real difference. That conversation between security chief Murtry and the (deceased) commander of the Edward Israel was important information. After the Ganymede refugees discovered lithium on Illus, the RCE corporation (kind of like Exxon) had been given a charter by Earth and Mars to extract lithium from Illus...even though Avasarala claimed nobody was allowed on the Ring planets. That charter had been approved by only Earth and Mars...the OPA had been left out of those negotiations even though they are part of the tripartite treaty. Murty's job, as he told the commander of the Edward Israel, was to roust the Ganymede refugees and take the lithium they'd already mined for RCE. He also said that rousting Belters off their mineral claims was something he'd been doing for years. Remember how Dawes had said of the Inners, "...they see the stars and think: 'Mine!'" Earth and Mars are repeating the Treaty of Tordesillas that divided the Africa and the Americas between Spain and Portugal. But who gave Spain and Portugal that authority then, and who gives Earth and Mars that authority now?

Good to see you at the start of the next chapter in our beloved series! I think that the outdoor shots of Illus were done in a rock quarry north of Toronto, Canada. The cinematography for this show is ALWAYS great, but I think they turned it up a bit for Season 4.

Not only they are going to a new alien planet in a different solar system, but for Naomi, it's a first time on any planet anywere. Imagine having lived all your 30 odd years inside tunnels and ships and every time you get outside you have to experience it through a bulky vacuum suit. When she walks out for the first time on real ground, seeing a real sky, breathing real air, it's the full frontal experience on what it means to finally and truly be FREE of any constraints. Can you imagine? Living in caves your entire life what it means to actually walk on the outside and breathe it all in? And what a Chad Holden is, he knows that stumbling is part of the experience so he doesn't rush to help her, he wants her to enjoy every second of it on her own knowing she is strong enough to appreciate it all. So well done. No wonder you got emotional, it's a powerful scene.

Hey, just wanted to let you know there's something wrong with your Expanse videos. Noticed this in earlier seasons but it's getting a little more noticeable now. The source footage is lagging behind your reaction by a second or so. You're reacting to something and then it happens as opposed to the other way around. Not a huge deal but it is a little jarring.

One important thing to add. I think: is that the people choosing the 'wrong thing' think themselves they are choosing the right thing. No single human is a villain in their own eyes. They all do it because they think they are right. Hitler. Mao, everyone. I think this is an important insight. Some people think less than others it has to be said. Act on instinct. Fear is a powerful one.

I am a liberal so tend to want to think good of everyone, and this might be part of it. Though I think it is true. Just wanted to add something about sexual violence and rape as I am a survivor of that (like Amos). I almost do not want such 'lesser' criminals off the hook. I mean we need to stop them and lock them up. Ok. Some people do lack empathy. Which is a scary thing.

Be careful not to fall into the fallacy that people who believe differently than you do so out of fear. It is extremely insulting to do so, basically you aggravating an already tense situation filled with the potential for conflict by claiming that those who think differently than you are blithering idiots acting only out of primal emotions they are too immature to be able to control rather than a rationally derived belief system. They oppose you because they firmly believe your way of living and doing things will harm the society you live in, or maybe even the entire world. Claiming they act out of fear is just an ad hominem attack that avoids addressing their beliefs and providing some good reasons why you are right and they are wrong. One reason I love The Expanse is that it provides all sides of a dispute with good reasons to explain their actions.
