They're not good for determining popularity but they're still what networks have to rely on for advertising impressions. SyFy is a business and has to earn a profit on the show, and they can only do that when people watch the show live. It doesn't matter how popular it is in other viewing mediums and scenarios if they aren't getting enough live watchers to sell the ads to pay for the show and make money.

I agree its super outdated and annoying that that is the only relied upon method. Console videogames also have a really outdated metric that does not include digital purchases. That is so incredibly stupid, how have they not found a way to add those sales to the physical ones?

I'm with you wizard but like Arkalius said as long as there are bums on seats staring at live TV when the adverts come on, the platform will exist. Advertisers pay the BIG money for a reason, they know how much saturation there'll be during any given ad break, for any particual type of product, and those popular shows, Coronation Street for example here in the UK, are a goldmine. 30+ years of practice at what to say to get that brand in the mind of a purchaser, the next time they are out shopping. There's way too much easy money at stake, and connected though us (41yo) youngsters are, granny still watches her tv, bitch no watch Expanse tho

This video came up in my feed. A few things: it's great The Expanse was picked up by Amazon for another 3 seasons. I only discovered it in early 2021 and it's the one of the best, if not the best Sci Fi series I've ever seen. Now if only it would get picked up for the last 3 books (books 7-9!). The irony is Cas Anvar was a big part of getting The Expanse renewed only to get himself fired from the last season for multiple allegations of sexual harassments backed up by an independent investigation. Talk about self immolation. It was really disappointing when they killed Alex off, especially when we know his character continues on in the books.

The other problem IMHO is that Syfy dug themselves such a deep hole in terms of a bad reputation that when they finally air a good show, nobody gives it a chance. I discovered Expanse through an article titled "The Best show on TV you're not watching"

Lack of advertisment I guess, compare it with any of Marvel shows that was released or about to be released, everyone seem to know what about to happen even before the release lol. and "1000 detailes you missed in ep 1" videos pop out everywhere in YT
