Notice Errinwright never even LOOKS at the Secretary General in the beginning. He only acknowledges Anna. It shows his total disregard for SG (deserved or not). Brilliantly written and portrayed by all actors.

Exactly, she fell into the classic trap of thinking that at that level of power, there are good guys and bad guys, and all you have to do is beat the bad guy to win; there are NO good guys in that game, only bad guys and worse guys, and honestly there's no way to know for sure which is which until you allow them to slip into the kind of power that they can't be removed from without a lot of blood being spilled. It's like the people who vote for Candidate B because Incumbent A was seen as such a villain; only to realize A was a boyscout who knew what he was doing, in comparison to B, who's an outright monster who'll blunder us all into oblivion.

@@R4Y2k I’ve come to appreciate errinwright so much more as a character with time. He’s not 100% correct about Mars, as there are many martians who are good, noble, and genuinely dedicated to the cause of building a new world, but he clearly could see there was something dark growing inside of Martian culture (which would later manifest as the Laconian empire). He clearly has an excellent mind for strategy, geopolitics, and a clear vision of the future which sets him apart from the rest of the UN government. It’s interesting to speculate about an alternate reality where Errinwright is secretary-general of the UN. It seems likely that under him the UN would achieve its full potential and be able to absolutely dominate the system and all of the worlds through the ring gates (although his Machiavellian tendencies would likely make this reunification a cold and bloody affair). Regardless, he’s certainly one of the most interesting characters in the series to me at least

Errinwright was a pretty cool bad guy, one of the best I've seen in years. I like his character - indeed the reason I like The Expanse - is that every single character is acting rationally to do what it thinks is right - maybe with the exception of Mao. But even when Errinwright went full psycho and killed the (person from Mars, trying to prevent spoilers), he was doing so because he thought he was saving Earth from the ravages of the protomolecule and was he actually wrong? Excellent, excellent, excellent TV show - perfection!

I think Errinwrights intentions weren't vile. He truly cared for earth, he was just willing to go too far to secure it's predominance in the system.
@EdGeLV3 жыл бұрын
Dunno about books, but from the show the context i got was that UN power is either stagnating or declining, which would explain why he/mao would rush above the bureacraucy and undertake the discovery of protomolecule themselves, maybe they thought by sacrificing eros they would secure UN supremacy for decades
@KoishNoish3 жыл бұрын
@@EdGeLV I think Errinwright definitely believes that and is willing to put Mars down while Earth still holds some advantage but I honestly don't think Mao much cares. Mao only works with Errinwright because Errinwright is desperate enough to edge out Mars to fund Mao's work. Hell when Errinwright gets cold feet over the protomolecule Mao straight up abandons Errinwright and begins working with Mars to continue work on the hybrids. It's not that Mao doesn't care about Earth - Mao cares about humanity as a whole and is prepared to sacrifice Eros, children, even his own daughter to let the protomolecule evolve and see how it might one day help humanity reach higher
@byhyew3 жыл бұрын
And Mao's was right. Had it been people with good intention like Holden that got their hands on the protomolecule, they'd have burnt it up in the Sun out of fear, and people'd likely never have gotten access to the ring gate.
@KoishNoish3 жыл бұрын
Arguably access to the ring gate isn't a good thing. Yes humanity can spread more freely now but it's shattered the Martian dream as Martians now don't need to terraform Mars as they can just move to an already habitable planet. It's almost completely shut the belters out of the larger game as their people can't stand the gravity and the few who can will, within one generation, not even be Belters anymore as they'll be born planetside. And also there seems to be malicious dangerous creatures inside the ring spaces themselves who are likely who originally killed whoever made the protomolecule. But I do see your point

Watching the show I was very frustrated when Sorrento-Gillis made an appearance since he seemed so shallow, stupid, and manipulable, and it came across as unrealistic. I figured the SG wouldn't just go with whatever opinion he heard last, so easily swayed by Errinwright, Anna, or Avasarala, with no opinions of his own. This scene justified his character, or lack thereof, making another character acknowledge it, and erased all of that sense of unrealism. In the end, the guy does make you believe that he would speak passionately about a mop.
