My favorite single moment from the entire series - a scene from S3E6 of The Expanse.
I truly hope it can be picked up for one or two more seasons to bring the story to a fitting conclusion.
All rights belong to the creators and distributors of this excellent show.

Amos also probably never thought that he could ever be someone's "friend". He told Alex that there are three kinds of people: people you follow, people you protect, and people you have to kill. Prax started out as a person Amos needed to protect from others, but Prax quickly toughened up. In this scene, Amos needs to protect Prax from himself. He also realizes that he's capable of being a friend and an equal, not just a protector, a follower, or a killer. Notably, it's after Prax leaves that Amos has a big personality shift where he becomes even closer to Alex and Holden. It's because he realizes that he no longer just needs to "follow" Holden or "protect" Alex. He can do those things AND be their friend.

I think it must be every actors dream to get a scene like that this. A scene where the entire character comes to light. but it is none of those things. Amos is Sociopathic, he is merely doing what others can't. In this scene he understands that Prax wants to kill the doctor but can't So Amos does it for him. Not out of anger or goodness, or mercy, or from a sense of morality. But because Prax is not capable of it. You see clearly later on that Amos has no moral compass, or sense of goodness.

There is a moment when Amos is facing the airlock door after escorting his best friend in the whole world out of the room so his best friend can be a dad and not a murderer where you can't see Wes's eyes or any of his face, just a slight change in his posture, a slight hesitation before turning toward Strickland that lets the audience know what's coming. It's a tribute to the acting and directing that "I am that guy." is the most anticipated line in the scene, yet it has such impact.

The compassion with which he says "you're not that guy" easily translates to mean you're better than this and don't be that guy. Amos isn't bragging about being that guy, he's just being honest. He doesn't torture the doctor or prolong the kill either. Excellent writing and acting.

yeah, it's especially notable that while prax is raising a sidearm, cautiously, to do it, that's not the same as Amos. He knows the guy should die, and is the right man to do it, so he calmly shoulders his normal rifle and pulls the trigger as easy as can be. It's sort of especially indicative of the difference that he doesn't go for a sidearm or other, less destructive, weapon, because his aim is to kill a dude so he's going to do it efficiently and effectively, because he doesn't see any reason not to just mark it up as another clean kill.

I think this was the moment when Amos realized that through his own decisions and actions he had helped a guy and his daughter reunite - something he missed in his own childhood probably. And so kinda "leveled up" as before he was only looking out for others holding their moral compass in front of him... He wouldn't interfere with a random dude killing another random dude before. But he KNEW in this moment that he does have his own moral compass and the ability to make is own decisions and influence others to be better. The friendship thing is just the tip of the iceberg. He lets Prax do what he does best - be a dad and botanist. And he's doing what he does best: killing interplanetary assholes.

I remember reading an interview with the authors on some changes they did to the 5th season specifically. Iirc it boiled down to: they saw that Naomi is kinda a damsel in distress in the books durign that part of the story, so they gave her more agency in the show. They explained that they see the show as a way to add and fix things they didn't think of when writing the books, or that they think works better on screen. That (really cool) approach shines through in scenes like this: they basically got a chance to tell their story again but in a different medium and having grown as writers and with the hindisght of a mostly finished series behind them, and kinda "streamlined" a lot of it in the process. I think S. A. Corey are amazing writers and I am so happy they got the chance to be part of the production. The Expanse ended up being one of the rare treats where the show and the books are very different yet both are great.
@JoshIdstein

@@IreneWYoh god yes, the way they expanded Drummer for the show is one of the best things they did. Same with Ashford, I prefer the show's version to the books. Another one that comes to mind is Anderson Dawes. And weaving Avasarala into the story much earlier... also an absolute master stroke of adaption. Almost all the composite characters or expanded characters end up being better than their book counterparts. I think the only two characters I actually prefer in the books are Prax and Bobbie (i still think its a shame they left out her obsession with Samurai movies in the show, it made her even more endearing to me haha).

Ty Franck and Wes Chatham have said that Amos understands when a situation is likely to result in violence, so he just skips the talking and negotiating phase to save everyone time. That's why he's sometimes just goes straight to violence (like with the hacker), and other times uses the bare minimum of force to defend himself and his friends (like when Bazia attacked Prax).

What's best in this scene is that the moment Amos stands still, even though we don't see his face - we feel the threat and the tension in the air. And Amos' words "I am that guy" are no surprise. "No. Seriously. SHUTUP!" No raised voice, just total controlled rage at the thoughts of the experiments done to these children! Amos, Wes Chatham played the "border-line-sociopath" perfectly. He was close, but unlike a genuine sociopath, he was capable of being touched at an emotional level, by both men, and women. When Prax tells Mei that Amos his is best friend in the world, Amos' expression changes ever so slightly. What a tremendously well done show. Casting was right on the money. Script was tight with no ammo wasted. Acting was most often Emmy level, though these kind of shows don't get the consideration they deserve.

He was worried enough that he might be a sociopath that he attached himself to people who he thought did "good" things just so they could be his moral compass. He just lived in a world of such predatory violence for so long that his moral compass can't be trusted anymore, but he wants to be a good person, at least to his friends.

I love how well they differentiate genuine sociopath with "learnt" sociopathic tendencies. The doctor is a genuine sociopath. He doesn't experience emotions in a real sense, he has no sense of morality, but he knows well how to play the emotions or morality of others. He's good at looking normal. Amos on the other hand looks like a sociopath. His emotions are hard to read and rarely expressed, but he does have them. His difficulty expressing emotions is because trauma forced him to look like he's always in control, weakness in his childhood was deadly. He looked to others for a sense of morality because he often had to do terrible things in his part to survive, which made him distrust his own judgement/ moral lines as he has crossed them so often. Yet he's trying to understand what being morally righteous is. As a mental health professional this is such an interesting scene because of that exploration

There have been a few really good movies/series that stand out in my mind. Noble House, The West Wing and Game of Thrones (among others) are examples. The Expanse proudly takes its place amongst these gems. A truly amazing production in all phases. Top notch.

One of the best Science Fiction masterpieces of all time. The original material, the producers, the directors, the writers, the actors and special effects artists brought this vision of one of humanity's possible futures to vivid dramatic life.

This show hits on so many levels of a person's humanity. Shit, now I have to go on my 5th rewatch. Thanks a bunch. At least I have "You could be both" as a consolation prize.

That and when Amos goes to the prison to see the woman who tried to kill Holden, those are the two moments that really show how complex Amos is.

This is some really intense story telling. Amos having the empathy to explain that "you are not that guy." And in a so many ways he saves May's father. Then he turns around and kills the doctor for subjecting May to the experiments. I just have to ask, Why is it that only Game of thrones gets the Emmy nomination? The Expanse is just really good story telling. I look at Amos and I see this intense character. Amos is contradictory while being a straight arrow at the same time. They choose the perfect actor too. A man that looks like a teddy bear and is a deranged monster at the same time. I never get tired of watching The Expanse for this among many reasons.
