The one thing I didn’t understand but made PERFECT sense to me once explained was why sometimes it appeared like ships were flying backwards. Meaning the engine thrust was in the same direction as the ship was heading, instead of burning behind them. Answer: How else would you brake in space? Once you’re in motion you’re just gonna keep going forever until something stops you. So they have to flip and thrust to start a braking process. I’m sure lots of you guys got that from the get-go, but it was a revelation to me. 😅

The technical/mathematical term is "brachistochrone", meaning that you're in constant acceleration for half the trip, then in equal deceleration for the second half. Why that doesn't require a massive amount of fuel is explained later :)

@@pukkandan nah, they wont. If you have constant acceleration then the G force will be the same. Speed will change, but the acceleration is the same. High Gs are experienced only when the change in acceleration is fast. Like Formula 1 car : 0 to 60 in about 2-3 seconds. Or when they brake and hault to a 0 in mere few seconds. But if keep acceleration the same, you'll still increase the speed but the amount of Gs will stay the same

@@whaazup4ma Or if you need to make a huge change in velocity in a short amount of time like the Canterbury was doing; she wasn't headed toward the distress signal and already headed to Ceres, so she needed to cancel out her existing momentum and then get to the location of the distress signal. Nasty high G burn is the only way to do that fast if they're still determined to try and get back to Ceres fast.

YES! Welcome to The Expanse, hold on to your hats! 😀 This show is pretty scientifically accurate, so forget all you know from Star Wars, Star Trek, etc. This is a science-grounded hard SciFi. There's no warp / light speed. There's only the massive power and G-forces required to change directions and pick up speed. The flip and burn was exactly that, them breaking by putting down power in the opposite direction. The "juice" they're injected with is to help them deal with the massive G-forces that such a maneuver implies. Basically the different factions you're introduced to here are Earth, Mars and The Belt. The Belt references the asteroid belt between the planets of Mars and Jupiter, but since there's nothing further out than that, it also kind of encompasses everyone passed that point in the solar system. You also heard mentions of The OPA, which stands for Outer Planets Alliance. They're basically trying to be the political arm of the Belt, but they're very divided internally into different factions themselves. They're just considered terrorists by Earth and Mars and are often associated with violence and attacks, both against Earth- and Mars-targets but also between their own factions. You're going to love this show! It starts a little bit slow, in order to properly introduce the world and a bunch of characters, but when it's done putting down the foundation it just takes off and doesn't stop. 😀

Oh man I've watched the entire show, and reading someone describe the show exactly how I see it now too is fun! You're so right, they somehow make every episode better than the last and the story is just amazing. Some of them twists and new additions, plus scenarios - man this is one of the best sci-fi shows of our time. And I'm someone who loves sci-fi... Stargate SG1/Atlantis/SGU, Battlestar Galactics, Andromeda, Star Trek (all the different ones except from Voyager, the recent Discovery was really good visually if you ignore how some things don't look the same), Dark Matter, Killjoys, plus others I cannot remember off the top of my head. But the expanse was on a whole new level of sci-fi that is so immersive! Anyway I'm rambling now so, SMILE!

So check it, in regards to the flip and burn: the only two ways to create gravity in space are to spin around like a Merry go round, which pushes you outwards, and creates a fake "gravity". OR you accelerate until you are pushed "down", like in a fast moving car. However, there's no stopping in space, you don't have brakes. Let's say you get going to 200,000 mph, but you need to stop. You flip the ship around and point the engine in the direction you're going them turn the engine on. That pushes you in the opposite direction until you stop. This also keeps your fake gravity the whole time
@mbpoblet
@mbpoblet 4 жыл бұрын
An example of spin gravity in the show is Ceres itself (and other similar asteroids, though Ceres is the largest); the rock doesn't have enough gravity to be able to walk on it (it's got around 3% of Earth's), so they _spun_ it until it was generating the equivalent of 30% of Earth's gravity (at the equator, I assume; since the accelerationdepends on the speed you're spinning at, it'll vary with latitude and depth, and will be lower elsewhere). Of course, though, this _"gravity"_ is pointing _outwards_ (imagine spinning a bucket of water with its handle tied to a rope, the water will stay in it, but it'll point _away_ from you, at the centre), so their feet will point towards space and their heads towards the centre of spin. Which comes in handy when you want to _literally_ drop someone out of an airlock, I suppose.

@@DragonDreamt Regarding the flip and burn: have you noticed how you feel slightly heavier when you're in an elevator and it starts going up (only at the start, when it's accelerating), and slightly less heavy when it starts going down? Same principle, but taking out the Earth's gravity (so that if the elevator - the ship - wasn't accelerating or decelerating, you'd be floating). As for spin _"gravity",_ put some water in a bucket, tie a rope to its handle, grab the other end of the rope (at a length that won't let the bucket touch the floor) and start spinning the bucket around you (somewhere where you won't hit anything, of course), starting slow and going faster over time; eventually, if you spin fast enough, the rope will be horizontal and the surface of the water will be almost vertical, but it'll stay in the bucket without spilling (unless you stop suddenly or hit something). Or, similarly, when you're in a turning car and get pulled towards the outside of the turn, or pulled towards the back of the car when you hit the gas or towards the front when you brake. Except in space you can't brake, so to stop you have to turn the _"car"_ around (you'd need a whole second engine for a reverse gear) and hit the gas in the opposite direction of where you're going.

Astronauts say that after spending months out in space at zero gravity, coming back to Earth's gravity does legit hurt. The spin gravity on Ceres station (where Miller is in the show) is only like 0.3 g (Earth is 1 g), which is why that bird can hover like it does. Also, it looks trippy. :)

It's not just having weak bones and muscles. If you grow up in weak or no gravity, your heart will not have the strength to pump blood from your feet to your head. Not only do your legs feel too weak to walk, you probably have constant dizziness and nausea like having really low blood pressure unless you lie down, maybe even having trouble breathing.

There is no lightspeed in this show. There is only acceleration. Gravity is also a form of acceleration. One G is one earth gravity. You are being accelerated downwards by 9.8 meters per second every second from being on earth. While there is no lightspeed, they are accelerating up to very, very high speeds. If you accelerate a car to 100 miles an hour in 5 seconds you are going to feel the car seat pushing on your back like a kind of gravity. If you accelerate your car from 0 to 1000 miles an hour in less than a second that pressure will be more than 40 G. You are now running into the kind of problems where the bottom half of your heart cannot lift the top half, so that's one organ that's not going to work, and I want you to try and imagine having 40 times your own weight stacked on top of your chest and trying to take a breath. That's another one. This is what the show takes into account. Also, there is no artificial gravity. Whenever there is gravity on a spaceship in this show it is because it iss accelerating. Flip and burn literally means to flip the ship around and turn the egnine on. You do not slow down in space, so if you want to stop somewhere you are going to have to spend time and fuel accelerating in the opposite direction of where you are going, and you have to start doing this while that acceleration is still survivable. Hope this helped, and don't worry, you will get a visual explanation of very fast acceleration/deceleration. I'm very much looking forward to it!

12:00 Flip and burn is exactly what It sounds like. In space to change direction you have to flip over and burn your engines to cancel out whatever momentum you had in the old direction to start to move in a new direction. The change in thrust causes the force requiring them to be strapped down and injected with drugs so they don’t pop a blood vessel and stroke out.
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps

Well, no, you could just have thrust to the "side" but that would probably just mean suffering even more flip&burn later.

Mats Mårtensson Burning radially would only alter their orbit and cause them to sail past the derelict ship. Not to get too far into the weeds on this one, both the Scopuli and the Canterbury were both heading from Saturn to Ceres, before they both stopped at that asteroid. So there probably just a little radial deflection needed to alter the orbit to match the rock when the Canterbury slowed to investigate. This makes me realize that I’ve played entirely too much Kerbal Space Program

YES!! So glad you guys are finally getting around to this show. It takes a while to get going, but it is so worth it. Easily the best science fiction show in over a decade. We Expanse fans are dedicated and devoted, and most of us are huge nerds. So if you'll allow me a nerdy moment: When you think about space travel in this series, it's important to think about the physics of space travel--because this show is incredibly detailed on that front. It's not so much about high speeds being dangerous for humans, but rather ACCELERATION. Thrust gravity will play an important role in this show, as will the effects of maneuvers that cause high inertial "gravity". That's why they take those drugs in the chairs--so they don't stroke out from the G-forces. Anyway, so glad you guys are doing this!! You're in for one hell of a ride!

They don't have light speed. They can accelerate fast in space, but they can only accelerate as much as the human body can take. They can also keep accelerating at a constant 1G to make gravity in space, and halfway through the journey they rotate the ship backwards, to brake by pointing the engine thrust towards the destinations, maintaining gravity. Very real way of doing it.
@mscheese000
@mscheese000 4 жыл бұрын
They generally wouldn't accelerate at 1G, since Belters mostly wouldn't be able to take it. Standard acceleration for cruise is more like 1/3 G.

I started watching the show shortly before the controversy with SyFy was going on. A friend suggested it to me and I decided to start watching. I had the EXACT same reaction to a lot of it. Was trying to catch names out the gate much like you guys. If there's one criticism I had at the time it was that I felt they didn't do a very good job of associating names with faces. But yeah, it is an INTENSE show and this first episode is a small sampling. An appetizer, if you will. Hope you guys are ready for the main course. I'm very excited to re-watch the series and re-experience it for the first time vicariously through your reaction videos. It's going to be a lot of fun!
