As we catch up on another series, here's an updated if you missed it posted on the community tab... A video will go up with more info but starting Monday, we’ll be taking a mini break to charge up for the rest of the year - catching up on Ozark (will be 2x a week soon), return of The Boys, TWD S10 finale and all the other legacy shows (shows we've reacted to that are still in production) returning in 2020. With so many shows set to return, don't expect anything new for a little bit.

@@WuMyth No, he didn’t change, our perception of him simply changed. Many of his actions and statements in his first episodes are ambiguous - they can be taken as him having nefarious intent but that isnt necessarily true. His ambiguous portrayal is probably deliberately done to show us how Drummer in particular sees him at first (she thinks Anderson Dawes sent him to take over the ship) Ultimately it turns out he did not in fact have nefarious intent, he was never ‘Anderson Dawes’ puppet’, rather he simply figuring out how to do his job correctly (as second in command which is a position he is probably not familiar with considering his history, and also having far more knowledge and experience than Drummer, but having to be careful not to push Drummer too much).

@watashi I don't know, I'm not convinced; it was never properly confirmed what that Belter was doing with that stolen Martian stealth tech. I also am not sure that I can imagine the kind of OPA extremist who would commit suicide in a way deliberately intended to be an 'f-you' to Earthers just to avoid interrogation from the UN would enter into employment with an Earth-based corporation. It's also perfectly possible that the plan to throw asteroids coated in stealth tech at Earth existed before the Ring gates opened. The opening of the gates just made it more urgent to do so from Marco's perspective, and provided an opportunity to steal from Mars more easily. Early seasons of the show also made a concerted effort to do more than the books did to set up future plot points

Murtry: “Civilization has a built-in lag time. Just like light delay. We fly out here to this new place, and because we’re civilized, we think civilization comes with us. It doesn’t. We build it. And while we’re building it, a whole lot of people die. You think the American west came with railroads and post offices and jails? Those things were built, and at the cost of thousands of lives. They were built on the corpses of everyone who was there before the Spanish came. You don’t get one without the other. And it’s people like me that do it. People like you come later.” Marcos is like the belter Aegon the Conqueror with a stolen dragon.

The scariest thing about this is that Marco is killing the Belt with Earth. Remember Ganymede - one of the largest and most complex stations - simple yet complex. Only earth has a deep enough ecology to be resilient across generations - without continuous inputs from Earth, the Belt will, over the long run, collapse. But Marco doesn't believe that, belters are all in his philosophy, so he will kill the goose that lays the golden egg. The real irony though, is that Niomie has managed to actually do everything that Marco said he wanted - there really is NO reason to actually attack earth any more due to HER actions. I wonder how much of this attack is driven by Marco's (possibly unconscious) jealousy that Niomie did without terror, everything he could never do with it.

I'm pretty sure all of those points along Earth's orbit were rocks that he's throwing. There is A LOT of foreshadowing throughout the story especially in early season 1 when Avasarala is interrogating that belter terrorist. Did you notice that was Filip who triggered the bomb on Mars? And, dang, Ersai's kids are going to be stuck on Mars. "Regrowth gel" was mentioned in the first episode of the season for that Canterbury crewman who lost his arm. Avasarala left her message to Nancy Gao while at the uniquely ornate Resolute desk. That was a desk built from the timbers of the English exploration ship HMS Resolute. It was a gift from Queen Victoria to President Rutherford Hayes. Nearly all presidents since then have used the Resolute as their Oval Office desks. Tradition has it that each outgoing president has left a personal message for his successor in the Resolute, as we see Avasarala doing here. Elvie said she felt a presence moving toward her "between the spaces." Remember at the end of the third season we saw something black rushing toward Holden as he passed through the ring. So Elvie has gotten her wish. She's in it now. Ashford put together that Martian renegades had been working with Marco in their mutual hatred of Earth since at least the Callisto insurrection (where Avasarala's son was killed). So now, remember that Belter smuggler that Avasarala was interrogating in the very first episode? They never revealed who he was working for. We were sort of left with the idea that he must have been working for Dawes, but he was far more eloquent in his ideology than any of Dawes' dockyard goons. Avasarala even mentioned he was "well-spoken for a Belter." He was parroting Marco's rhetoric. In that same episode, Avasarala said to her grandson that she feared "people who throw rocks," although we never got any evidence that such an attack had happened before. But remember the scene where Diogo and his uncle had been accosted by the Martian patrol? Diogo's uncle was listening to an OPA activist who was talking about using rocks to attack Earth, and that's what gave the man the idea to hurl his rock cargo at the Martian patrol. So like everything else in this series, they had put this "Chekov's Gun" on the table from the very beginning. So, Nikki noted that when those eight rocks hit Earth, Avasarala will be on Luna while her husband Arjun and Secretary-Elect Gao (and any of her constitutional successors) will be on Earth. I think that will put Avasarala back in charge, and with both son and husband having been killed by Belters, she'd be on the true warpath against them. I haven't read ahead, I'm just guessing. And Nikki was right, Gao had been on Avasarala's staff before resigning. I think Ashford declined to shoot Marco to prevent putting Filip on a road to personal vengeance that Naomi would not be able to reverse. Filip worships his father and will probably need to see Marco for who that man really is, rather than look back on Marco as a martyr. Amos had promised Holden he wouldn't kill Murtry, so he wouldn't. But he'd beat him to the point that the auto-doc would keep switching to hospice mode.

If you were to drop a rock on a planet, you wouldnt want it shattering into pieces. The bigger the piece that hits the greater the cataclysm. If it splits into enough pieces you would still get the desired effect just on a much smaller scale where they impact. If pieces were small enough in size they would burn up in the atmosphere much like how most meteoroids do on their way down. Stopping a rock like this, for the civilization from the books, would normally be fairly simple as there would be lots of detection time and altering the course of the rock just slightly would throw it on an ever diverging trajectory. The stealth tech is the problem. Whoever has to deal with this problem is going to have a lot on their plate. Oh.... 💃

They are, and everything is very well interwoven, so what has been going on from season 1 to season 4 has been preparing the next steps in the narrative. These first seasons will have a lot more meanings when everything is told at the end. As for instance, after season 3 one can understand better what is the protomolecule that we saw in season 1 and 2; there are things in these 4 seasons that will be better understood after knowing the rest of the story (there are 5 more books, we hope the show keeps going on to cover the whole of them).

A floating rock with no reactor and no engines, covered in black stealth paint, would be basically undetectable. It might get warm in the sunlight and could be detected in infrared. But I think Ashford said Marcos took highly metallic asteroids, which conducts heat very well. So the surface of the asteroids would efficiently be cooled by the freezing cold interior. And getting the whole thing heated up so that it starts to glow in infrared would likely take forever. The only way I could imagine to find these is to get the logs from Marcos' ship on which course he pushed them.

It would probably show up on radar, but it doesn't seem like Earth have invested in anything more than a short-range radar net. Getting a radar return from way out in the belt with an omnidirectional radar would take a riduculous amount of power - something on the order of a nuclear blast for just one single radar pulse. So no early warning.

@@rasmuskjrbyepetersen8862 A normal asteroid would. But they painted this one in Martian stealth paint. Radar absorbing paint is ridiculously effective. When the first stealth plane was being tested, the radar operator told the engineer to go over to the window to check if the plane had already been moved to the spot where the radar would be measuring its reflectivity, because there was nothing on the screen. When he looked out the window he saw the plane being in the spot, and when a crow landed on it the radar operator called him to come back because he's now getting a little bit of reflection. An asteroid wouldn't be the perfect shape to avoid radar and it certainly could be detected, but it might already be very very close it shows up on screens.

Simply put everything is about to get complicated. That is something to say from where we have come from but you have to remember that the story was born from a Hope of a game franchise so the story just goes on and on. The books and short stories are very well written. If they choose to do just half of what remains there are plenty of good tv to come. Let's just hope they can hold the cast and production together.

This show is a really great example of writing for a diverse cast. I mean, when you look at it, they easily have one of the most culturally diverse casts of any show. It's refreshing to see, and they've handled it really well. You never feel like they get "preachy" about being diverse. They simply are - and you learn to just appreciate the cast based on their characters rather than their ethnic makeup.

Amos' fixation on Murtry is perfectly portrayed-- a predatory sociopath recognizing a homicidal psychopath. Let's get ready to RUMBLE. People like Amos are needed to deal with the threat of people like Murtry and society really lucks out when men of Amos' caliber voluntarily connect themselves to people like Holden and Naomi. Otherwise, chaos reins. Amos' joy reminded me of how we Jamaicans fight. We'll mouth off, without incident, until someone loses their cool and strikes out. Then, the person who's been hit turns into a rage monster and goes for the kill (if they have the ability to do so).

What happens to Elvi touching the Gods Eye is way cooler in the book. Book Spoiler: A swarm of silver and blue gushed in the doorway, flowing in at her like a cloud of flies. Elvi pushed, slippled, fell forward- The closet analogy, the one her brain reached for and rejected and reached for again, was splashing into a lake. It was cold but not cold. There was a smell, rich and loamy. The smell of growth and decay. She was aware of her body, the skin, the sinew, the curl of her gut. She was aware of the nerves that were firing in her brain as she became aware of the nerves firing in her brain. She unmade herself and watched herself being unmade. All the bacteria on her skin and in her blood, the virii(viruses) in her tissues. The woman who had been Elvi Okoye became a landscape. A world. She fell father in. Cells became molecules-countless and complex and varied. The demarcation of one and another failed. There was only a community of molecules, shifting in a vast dance. And then the atoms that made up the molecules gave up their space, and she was a breath. A mist. A tiny play of fields and interactions in a vacuum as perfect as space. She was a vibration in nothingness. She rolled onto her side. Something hurt. Everything hurt, and the pain was interesting. A subject of curiosity more than distress. She was breathing. She could feel the air moving through her throat and into the complex network of soft caverns behind her ribs. It was a strange and beautiful sensation. She stayed with it until she began to realize that time existed. That moments were passing. That meant basal ganglia and cerebellum and cerebral cortex were all starting to work. She felt distantly surprised about that. She opened her eyes to nothing. She was holding something pressed to her like it was precious. The blue thing. Miller. Only it wasn’t blue anymore. It was the closed eyes blackness of everything else. She let it go and sat up.

What I really love about this season and the source material for it, is that it kind of "grounds" the story again. Even though galactic colonization is on the verge of beginning and a full blown apocalypse is occurring on an alien planet there are aspects of the conflict that feel small and intimate. Now they still have a lot of of room to grow and raise the stakes all over again while still consistently expanding the scope of the show. It's brilliant.

Season 1, Episode 4 (3 years and 42 episodes ago). Avasarala talking to her grandson on the roof. "I worry about people who throw rocks." That's some long, long range, next-level foreshadowing. Well played, Expanse. Well played. Marco threw at least 8 (I think) rocks, all with stealth tech and all coming from different directions. Since this is The Expanse, I don't think it's a spoiler to say that book 5 makes 2020 look like humanity's best year ever. Luna is what they call the Moon, and yes, Chrisjen is supposed to go there. It was Filip who stole the stealth tech from Mars and left the bomb for Bobbie. Bobbie and Chrisjen, anyone? All this stuff with Naomi looking for her son is an interesting setup... Ashford: such a G. Went out like the badass pirate he's always been. Think Drummer might be just a bit pissed off about it though. There was one person back in 4x1 that just had one scene that seemed like a throwaway, until you remember nothing in The Expanse is throwaway. :) I've been checking Expanse news every day for a release date, but I think it'll be 2021 at this point. I'd just like to say how much I've loved watching again with you guys. You're 2 of my favorite people on KZbin. So thanks. Now we gotta wait together. I'm also gonna try not to watch trailers (failed miserably last season and I think it would've been better to see it in-episode). They actually foreshadowed the Regrowth Gel back in Season 1 Episode 1. That worker on the Cant lost a chunk of his arm from an accident with the ice. @AngeloBarovierSD
@AngeloBarovierSD 4 жыл бұрын
Minor technical note: That's not foreshadowing. That's just worldbuilding. Regrowth gel isn't a plot point. There's no real narrative value to its use here, anymore than bandaging a wound has narrative value in most stories. Yes, Amos gets his fingers back but so would anyone else with access to the gel. Foreshadowing is more about alluding to narratively important elements.

I can''t wait season 5. You'll wait 3/4 of year less... 😀 Not going to spoil, but book 5 is my favorite one (and to almost everybody read it)... One I can tell, we will have multiple plots, emerging to one, and we get backstory for whole Roci crew (well, for Holden we already know everything). About rocks, we don't know right now how long it takes to travel to Earth, but knowing some elementary astrophysics, it takes "a while". So, we don't know when they suppose to hit. Enough, or I will spoil it... And, it was hard to catch, but we saw Fillip (Naomi's son) on Mars, trowing bomb to Bobbie...

Martian cop guy's name is Esai Martin. Put the tooth back in. I've had a dentist do that to me, extract a tooth in two pieces, glue it back together and shove it right back in. Painful both ways, but better than living with a broken root in your gums. But once out, it needs glue to keep it in, and supports to keep it straight. Mr. Martian Prisoner Dude had neither. Regrowth gel. You remember back in episode 1, Drummer had finally let the doctor regrow her spinal cord? She didn't need the mechanical hip-waders anymore. And in season 1 ep. 1, when the ice miner had his arm torn off, and Shed was recommending the new gel from Earth that would allow him to just grow a new one? There you go. Planet lights up, then goes dark. All part of Miller's master plan to destroy the world...or at least all the Protomolecule in it. He turns it all on, connects himself to it, and dives through the Eye of Sauron. No more proto, no more proto's physics-of-fusion dampening field. Everybody goes free. Taking Elvi through alongside him, though, that was unplanned. "Edward Israel, this is the Gunship Rocinante, I have target-locked your drive cone. You and me are about to have a *VERY serious* conversation." Sounds to me like Alex has been taking Holden lessons.... Bobbie Draper, UFN. (Unstoppable Force of Nature) She should put that on her business cards. Luna is our moon. Also, Martians are Inners too; they've done too many unwarranted AO-66 Inspections on Belters to escape judgement altogether. But first things first. Marco's evil master plan. Not just one stealth rock, but *eight.* That we saw. Possibly more. Timed to hit within days of each other. And since they're stealthed, once the first one hits or is intercepted, the UNN will think it's all over and stand down from high alert. 8 or more house-sized chunks of iron that won't burn to nothing in the atmosphere. One hit will kill millions. All of them will all but wipe out all life, and leave the survivors sacrificing virgins to the sky god to make the rock-rain _just please stop._ Marco has learned to dream BIG dreams. But the last thing out of Pandora's Box was Hope, provided by a doomed pirate who got Marco to boast a little, recorded it, and sent the recording off as he sang his life story with his final breath. Hail, Klass Actford, and fair travels to thee.
