How they managed to turn Ashford from a near villain to a massive hero that we all cried for. Some great writing in this show (and books).

The writers and actor made Ashford so HUMAN. The song, the bond with Drummer, the song with his daughter, the song while being spaced... I never expected to care that much about him and in the end he’s the character that broke me the hardest.

According to Ty and that Guy, Ashford wasn't even supposed to be part of season 4, David Strathairn enjoyed the role and was available so they wrote him in. Ashford is very different in the novels. One of the best parts about this series is that the actors made themselves bigger roles by overperforming in their craft. (For instance, Drummer was also a far smaller role.) While Thomas Jane may not be a character anymore, he actually directs several episodes season 5-6.

He got a really beautiful send off. Something about his hair in that final shot of his face reminds me of certain depictions of halos in classical paintings, as rays of light from behind someone's head. Rip Ashford, you had so much to teach.

I think the scene where Murtry punches Amos, and Amos turns back with that slasher smile is easily top 5 Amos moments. Ashford did, indeed, go out like a boss. He epitomizes saying, "Be wary of old men in a profession where many die young."

Part of what makes Ashford's death so tragic is that for most of his life he probably anticipated his life ending that way. It wasn't until right at the end of his life that he saw things changing in a way that it wouldn't have to.

RIP that badass pirate. The books discuss what happened to the 'melting' moon. The moons essentially store energy created by the planet. The moons like the planet didn't originally have all the dirt and other material over its surface, so when it fired a focused beam to destroy the shuttle, it burned through all that material. Like firing a super charged laser buried underground without clearing anything out of its way first.
@ksbsnowowl3569
@ksbsnowowl3569 Жыл бұрын
The show make one allusion to what all is happening with illus and it’s moons. Fayez mentions his old refrigerator from his college days; left it off all summer, then it caught fire when he turned it back on. The ‘planet’ and its moons are a billion-year-old machine that got turned back on by the Protomolecule. Things are malfunctioning.
@berjanbeen7188
@berjanbeen7188 Жыл бұрын
Also the moons are spaced out very regularly the first time they are shown, which doesn't really happen naturally (at least the statistical probability is very small) Another thing is that the scene where Holden climbs out of the tower suggest, together with the vast cavernous areas and just traveling huge distances, that Illus might also not be completely natural.

21:02 And that right there is a glimpse of what Amos would have been like if he never made the choice to find good people to help check his pathological instincts. Not a mere "badass", but something truely frightening. Just the look of "My God, what have I unleashed" on Murtry's face.

I've been a sci-fi fan for over 50 years, but The Expanse is honestly some of the best I've ever seen. Now you know why Ashford was MY favorite of the whole series. Whether you realize it or not, this season Ashford was treating Camina as a sort of surrogate adult daughter. Even though they were both administrators of the station and Drummer in charge, Klaes was being paternalistic. Not in a 'mansplaining way, but genuinely as guide hoping she would come more to his view of the "Belter Nation". This is why he felt so hurt during Marcos' trial. And one reason why he did not have her with on the hunt for Inaros.

The show doesn't really explain this in detail, but the book does go into it a bit more. The Ring Builders settled and heavily modified illus 2 billion years ago. The planet was designed to be a single massive refinery. Entire tectonic plates were artificially shaped and formed towards that purpose. The lithium veins on the planet are far larger than would be expected for naturally occurring deposit as well as having purity unachievable by any known natural phenomena. The string of islands on the opposite side of the planet from the settlement, one of which exploded, were nuclear reactors that provided power. The planet has 13 moons at equal spacing in the same orbit. They are likely part of a defense mechanism. One of the moons shot down the Edward Israel's shuttle, but the weapon on the moon overheated in the process and started melting. The death slugs normally live under ground but were forced up by the water to keep themselves from drowning.

I love you so much! You express so freely all the emotion I feel, but have hardly ever been allowed to express without my relationships taking a beating, since most people are repelled by very strong reaction to something that doesn't affect them (affect their affect, haha) the same way. On top of all that, you put in a lot of effort into absorbing and analysing every detail, much if which I missed, so that I don't just get to experience it all again with full emotions, but with a much more complete understanding. The Expanse is probably the best book series ever written, and you can look forward to an even more expansive (there I go again...) enjoyment when you get the full reading experience on top of this, even if it's just some perfectly crafted sentences.

The moons are power transmitters. In the books, Miller says the planet was one large power plant for multiple systems connected via the rings. When one of the moons melted, it was trying to relieve the overload of power from the broken reactor that exploded. That one moon was broken itself, it couldn’t transmit the power it was receiving, so it melted.

The guy that saved Marco was the guy that was in the elevator when the bomb went off on Mars in front of Bobbie Ashford got to be such a great character, even at the beginning. He was an older, more experienced man trying to impart some of his knowledge to a younger superior officer. You see it in the military a lot, A young, new Lieutenant being taken under the wing of an older grizzled Sergeant. Its what guys have as our version of a Mothers nurturing instincts. Mothers protect babies so they can become children, Fathers teach children to become adults. We try our best to pass on our knowledge so that just maybe, others won't make the same mistakes we did. Took me a long time to figure this out for myself

Ashford’s death hits so hard- The frustration I feel every time I watch that scene- knowing that there’s no saving him when he ends up in the Airlock….🤬 & yeah- Marco IS going to be a phenomenal villain 🤨 In the scene with Bobby & the bomb- did you see the belter in the elevator? That was Fillip ! ! 😮 One last note in Ashford - his statement about violence being indiscriminate & when you use it as a tool sometimes it will kill the ones you love the most…. I think he was talking about whatever it was that caused his daughters death- possibly a revenge attack for something he had done? Not sure about that actually in the books or anything - it’s probably just a connection I made up in my head 😋 Bring on season 5!!!! 🚀🚀🚀

Yeah, I'm right there with you with the reaction to Ashford's death. It broke my heart too back when I first saw it. Definitely got the most dignified and cinematic death in the series, at least in my opinion. It still hurts though, to see him step out into the darkness and be left there. And yes, it's absolutely ridiculous how perfectly they cast Filip, he is such a dead ringer for both Marco and Naomi that it's uncanny. Pose the 3 of them for a picture together, tell someone they're an actual family, and nobody would question it. Thanks as always for bringing us along on this journey with you, and sharing it with us, even when these shows cut to the bone.

Ashford was such a fucking great character. He wanted to overcome his own hatred towards the opression he has suffered and work towards a future inners are organized and recognized as a united nation. Even when he went against the main characters, he was trying to do something that he thought was good to help the solar system. He was charismatic, intelligent and compassionate. It is hard to choose a character on this show, but probably Ashford is my favourite among all my favourites. The writting is amazing in the show, and so are the characters. Marco is no exception to that. I love him as an antagonist, and I can't wait for you to see how the rest of the story will unfold.

If any episode was going to bring the ugly cries it was this one. But we did get an extra season with David Strathairn. He was only contracted for season three, but he liked the show so much he asked if he could stick around for another.

The only match we've seen in the show for Amos in a hand to hand fight is probably Bobbie. In the book Amos talked a little about her fighting skills, it was along the lines of "I'm (Amos) a talented amateur, she's a professional".

Outside of the Protomolecule devices, Illus has been shown to be safer than most Earth continents. About 20 years ago, I had a roadbike accident, a "face plant" into concrete at 20 miles an hour. My center upper incisors were shattered. My four lower incisors were knocked back into my throat in once piece, like a bridge. I hacked them out of my throat and used the side mirror of nearby parked car to plug them back in. I must have been in shock, because I can't recall much pain. I road about three miles to a dentist office and walked in carrying my bike over my shoulder. I intended to calmly say, "I've had a dental accident," but when I opened my mouth, about a cup of blood splashed out on the counter. Needless to say...they didn't keep me waiting. It took a year of surgery to get everything patched up, and those four incisors are still there, albeit all with root canals. "The dream of Mars isn't dead. It's about to be writ large!" Which dream? Avasarala is sitting at the ornate Resolute Desk to prepare her message to Nancy Gao. The Resolute Desk was built from the timbers of the old scientific exploration sailing vessel, the HMS Resolute. Queen Victoria had two desks made from the Resolute, one she sent as a gift to US president Rutherford Hayes. Most presidents since then have used the Resolute as their Oval Office desks. The tradition is that each outgoing president leaves a personal message to the incoming president in the Resolute Desk...as we see Avasarala doing here. Murtry couldn't take Holden in a fist fight...Amos will pummel him.

Also, Ashford goes out like a boss because he knew, his whole life, this was how he would die. He knew he was never going to go peacefully in his bed. He was always preparedfor this outcome. That is how he kept it together enough to get more into out of Marco and broadcast it. For all belters, it is never just about you. What a king.

AShford was a good focus point for a while, he was brutal in order for people to survive his own people i understood that, and he was harsh when people messed up because lets face it Space is harsh and unrelenting in its attempt to try and kill you, and we grew to like him so much because he showed growth i believe and a good friendship with Drummer came of it.

33:40 It was pretty much established early on that Ilus was rich in lithium (which was why the Belters went and chose to stay there). Aside from the big thorn structures/buildings, the two major clues _suggesting_ that Ilus was more than just a planet was the "city" that you saw when Holden clambered up the thing, and the bottomless artificial cavern with the bridges where Holden and Murtry had their standoff. Getting thirteen moon-sized objects to share the same orbit _and_ maintain equidistant spacing over billions of years is impossible in nature. So yeah, they're artificial. And creepy as heck imho.

Requiescat in Pace Klaes Ashford, Ghost Knife of Calisto, the second most honorable pirate in the system, after Camina Drummer. I just love your reactions to this show. Thank you for sharing. 《《♡》》 BTW, Filip was the guy getting on the elevator just before the explosion that brought down the dome on Bobby.😉

By the time I watched Ashford take his final walk I'd already seen it coming. Didn't make the moment itself any less terribly tragic. He's such a phenomenal character in the show. Also, I don't know if you plan to read the books, but I will say most of your questions about Ilus and its moons are answered there. And that is all I will say.

For what it's worth, and what you know of Drummer- Ashford is a big domino. Her reaction to this is something coming. And Yeah, Ashford's loss hits like a truck. It set me on edge from the start that he was willing to go back to his old ways- the old days where he was a pirate. As someone who was so against going back to the simple violence of existence before and advocated building something more- "the belters embrace all of you"- seeing him reverting always had a feeling that it would be a problem. I don't know if something about Marco concerned him that much, or if he saw some twisted reflection of his younger self, but an old man in a profession where men die you is something you respect, for certain, but there's always another man. Younger, hungrier. But man I miss the old man. And I'm mad we never got the duo of Drummer and Ashford in a fight together.

The moon melted for the same reason Eros got really hot when it was breaking the laws of physics. Some kind of waste heat from some kind of crazy protomolecule stuff. In this case, the moon evaporated that shuttle that was being sent down to the planet. The moons are part of some kind of defense system for the planet.

So weeks ago I slipped up by commenting that Drummer was one of my favorite characters and that she would have a foil that would lead to great storytelling . . . thus, unintentionally spoiling for you that she would obviously live through the assassination attempt on Fred Johnson (still sorry about that). We’ll Drummer and Ashford became my favorite duo in this series, followed closely by Bobbie and Christian. Believe me, I love all the Rocinante crew to bits, but the 2 pair of Drummer, Ashford, Bobbie, and Christian are my jam. Like you, I’d want to be a belter and serve the Beltalowda with beretna Ashford and sesata Drummer. Sorry Ashford going out with his space boots on broke your heart . . . it was the best exit for such a character. Love your show!

what I loved most about drummer and Ashford up to this point compared to mist of the other OPA is that while they all have justification most of the OPA are willing to kill for their cause, but those two have constantly been willing to die for the cause and not waver on their convictions

If I recall, the moons were part of the planet's defence system. The moon that was melting malfunctioned. The planet itself was a power plant, the ring builders used it to beam power across their empire.
