As an aside, the song that Ashford sings (both in this episode, the prior episode where it shows him with his child, and in the previous season with Drummer) is the shanty "Captain Kidd," or at least a Belter variation on it. The song is really important here, because the ending of the shanty is a warning to the listeners not to follow in Kidd's steps (piracy), lest they be dragged to hell alongside. Which Marcos is committing similarly unforgivable sins. The song/broadcast is a warning to others, that to follow the same path is to invite destruction on everyone, as could only be told by a grizzled old pirate gone respectable.

Ashford was rather two dimensional in the books and basically disappeared after book 3. I love what they did with his character in season 3 (doesn't hurt that he was played by the brilliant David Strathairn) and the way they used him to tie in elements of book 5 into this season was a wonderful capper. What an ending for a great series character. Marco is also fantastically cast. I can't wait to see all the crazy stuff that will be happening in season 5.

The way they adapted Drummer and Ashford for this season to set up things for Season 5 was just masterful. I absolutely loved Ashford's arc over the last two seasons. He went from someone I completely didn't trust to being a guy who had my complete respect. One of the best characters of the whole series. So sorry to see him go but it made for a brilliant finale. Going from 13 episodes to just 10 this time was a bummer, but they made the most of it. Bobbie's story this season was also great and wasn't part of book 4. This was many people's least favorite book, but I loved every minute of this. Everything about this show continues to be first rate. Next season should be epic. Thanks for the great reactions!

I always thought his role in Book 4 made no sense, because his connection to Miller was never really explored or utilized.
@scottwatrous4 жыл бұрын
In the book it's not too bad because it could make sense that an Earther security cop who had a big scare out in the belt might go back and join up with a different Earth security force; and especially if they had experience dealing with Belters like he did on Ceres, he'd be a solid pick for a mission like "New Terra". At that point his inclusion is really more of having a fun returning character for us to latch onto with any shred of backstory that doesn't have to be backfilled, versus actually having some big connection to Miller. Tho it has been a few years so maybe they sprinkled a little more into that than I remember. Removing him from the season is likely simply an availability thing and without us being able to go "oh yeah I remember that guy" his role to the story is essentially moot. Nor are there really any other people who could fill in that role of "familiar face"
@STR33TSofJUST1C34 жыл бұрын
Yeah, from the source material's perspective it points to the Belter on Mars being Filip. Esai said the "shipment" came in from Callisto, the Martian Ashford interrogated was an officer stationed at Callisto who sold weapons to Marco. In the books, Filip staged a theft of the stealth tech on the Callisto shipyards. So, going by the books, the "shipment" that Esai transported to the berth were the stealth composites that they use to cloak the rocks.

It has always annoyed me that in both the book, and in the show, the scientists, and everyone else on ilus, didn't wear any kind of protection against microbes. In the books, originally RCE was going to set up a dome over their entire encampment to protect them from any outside contamination, but then the shuttle being blown up messed all of that up.

I was honestly moved to tears at points, they did such a beautiful job with it (and it honestly was not my favorite book, but managed to become my favorite season). Anyways, in the meantime, if you guys want another good sci-fi series to watch, I strongly recommend "Babylon 5". It is more or less the OG "The Expanse", and many modern shows would not have been able to exist if it had not aired first. The first season is, for some, difficult to get through, as many considered it a low budget "Star Trek" rip-off, but in many ways it is similar to the first season of "The Expanse" in that it is mostly set up. But once you get into the second season, the series just sky rockets, and will take you places many modern shows, including the expanse, have not managed to go. That show had BALLS man. I really suggest you give it a try (and a little patience).

If you recall 'way back in season 1 episode 1, Avasalara was interrogating a Belter who was caught with Martian stealth tech. The writers let us think he was working for Dawes. But he was far more eloquent in his ideology than any of the thugs that Dawes attracted. We can see now that he was parroting Marco's language. Avasalara also had that fear of "people who throw rocks." So the writers planted the seed of a plot line that didn't sprout until now. The farewell letter to Gao was made by Avasalara from the Resolute desk. Queen Victoria gave it to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880; it was built from the English oak timbers of the British Arctic exploration ship HMS Resolute. It's rumored that American presidents since then have left outgoing letters to the next president in the Resolute desk. That looked like eight asteroids lined up to strike Earth in rapid succession. The helpful fact is that the asteroids have to be on a slow, natural-appearing trajectory toward Earth, much slower than ships. With the Protomolecule inactivated, Illus isn't any more dangerous than Australia. Everything in Australia is trying to kill you. The Protomolecule that built the gate was revived by Miller and Holden and will continue to do what it was programmed to do, which is operate the gate. But it appears that the Protomolecule everywhere else has been deactivated, and can't be re-activated unless someone takes some active protomolecule from the Solar System. That would be Fred Johnson's stash. Elvi saw the same thing we first saw at the close of the third season when something black flashed toward Holden as the Roci. I'm wondering if it's what destroyed the Protomolecule builders. Gao is too young and new to the game to be the mastermind behind everything. And I think this season has shown Avasalara to have been on the wrong side this time. Trying to keep everyone out of the gate planets was simply impossible. She would have been smarter to allow very gradual settlement, starting with letting the Ganymede refugees have Illus (since Earth and Mars were complicit in destroying Ganymede Station, the breadbasket of the Belt). She should have made Holden the vanguard of Ring planet investigation, which would have let Proto-Miller flip the switches on a planet that hadn't yet been occupied by any humans.

What died this season was every alien tec that has a Ai that was connected to miller in that specific moment. The part of the "protomolecule" that had miller inside and every machinery in Ilus/new-terra are dead, but any alien tec or protomolecule that was outside that solar system is normal.

Mikey hit on it... "Extinction level event" is exactly what those asteroids will trigger. Marco looks to be a great villain for S5. I'm not sure if this has already been clarified in the comments but, here goes: The original plan was to blow up the RCE landing pad so they wouldn't be able to land, and also send a message that they were unwelcome hoping they would go away. But then the RCE people came early and I guess the others were like "now we can blow them up too" but Lucia wanted to set of off the bomb before the RCE ship got too close. Unfortunately by the time she was able to get to the detonator the RCE ship was already close enough that lots of people died. But the fact remains, if she hadn't pulled the trigger at that time the others would still go ahead with the plan and way more people would have died, maybe all of them. Now all the other conspirators are dead, leaving Lucia, the only one that was trying to minimize the damage. I think Holden did the right thing

Interesting take on Nancy Gao, but a bit over the top. My opinion Gao involvement is not in chaos on Sol system directly but she was the one who gave RCE the charter and the offer that Murtry talking about with Wei~4.08. Reason are she was the only high ranking UN officer(formerly Home Secretary, as you know IRL usually this office that give mining charter)~4.02 and mission leader RCE at that time ~4.01 that called that planet "New Terra". Mind you not even Avasarala called that even she rebuked Nancy Gao one time called that planet New Terra. In Expanse there are no strange occurrence of piggybacking a mission, Avasarala did that with Venus mission~2.10. Beg a question who gave the charter on Mars behalf and did you think the election were rigged?coz either Belter or RCE survive they would brought their ore to Sol confirming Gao platform, the only scenario she is not winning was aliens obliterated them and came out from the gate. That some incentive to asked certain chief security to take control whatever alien tech that he found,right? And now with Belter terrorists would wreack havoc with allegedly Mars support. It would create vacuum power, who gonna exploit that?? Oh proto is not gone, remember the sample, remember there are many system the builder has gate on. And the thing that killed the builder and Elvi met,i dont think that the last of it.

Fear not, they already wrapped primary shooting on season 5 last week. Won't be too long.

Mmm, principal photography hasn't quiiite wrapped yet. The social media posts you saw were about the wrap party (which very often is held BEFORE picture wrap, because people are still around). You'll know when shooting actually wraps.

Pat defends the most vile people then attacks all the good guys for inadvertently hurting people. Is he trolling or actually a psychopath?

I still hate what they did with Arjun this season. There was no reason for it, and her husband had never been interested in politics at all in the previous seasons

Y’all need to react to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure!! It’s the most underrated anime, I would argue the best anime!!!it influences every anime basically after 1990. Rated 2nd most popular manga of all time.

Holden letting Lucia go is pretty wrong. Even if she tried to negate a full extermination of the Earth mission, she still killed a lot of people. Arresting only Murtry and not Lucia is biased and fucked up. They should both be in prison.
@ranialian85374 жыл бұрын
I love Holden and Naomi and I like Lucia, but ensuring Murtry stands trial while Lucia goes free is unfair and hypocritical. I know she didn't mean to kill anyone but that doesn't change the fact that she did (a lot of innocent people in fact). The problem is, both Holden and Naomi chastised Murtry for acting as judge, jury and executioner yet that's exactly what they did by picking and choosing who deserves to face the rule of law. I dislike this part.

Honestly Murtry gets a harsh treatment in this season, especially at the end with the beatdown from Amos and (presumably) a long prison sentence on Earth. Of course he wasn't perfect, and his views on Belters in general and civilisation were dubious, but you can't really blame him for the way he acted. The majority of his people were shot to pieces without a care in the world from the Belter refugees, yet he's the bad guy for standing up for his people and being wary of those same murderers?

Marco wasn't developed (or even explained) enough to earn the kill of Ashford. Well done scene though. Still S4 is easily the weakest, whole thing feels like a b story.
