We visited the mountains of Wales to shoot at the legendary Pennal. The birds here are the highest I have ever seen, and learning to shoot them was as a very steep learning curve indeed.
You could be lucky enough to win a chance to go by purchasing a ticket to shootingshow.c... and signing up with Will at the Cambrian Birds Stand.
Enjoy!

20 years ago for a significant birthday my now late father in law bought a day in Wenslydale Yorkshire. I'm not ashamed to say that as a wildfowler out of my depth in the hills I shot 12-1. My f-i-l with his Beretta 20 bore shot 7-1 in a glory day. I will never forget allowing birds to fly over me while I watched him shoot. It is etched in my memory more than any of the birds I connected with. This video though shot in different terrain brought back so much emotion. Thank you for your superb presentation. Regards from Scotland.

I'm very lucky to live a few miles south of here and sometimes you have to watch something like this to remind you just how lucky you are to live where you live! It's easy to take the stunning scenery etc for granted when you see it every day but when you see it through the eyes of others the magic is re-ignited all over again. Awesome video as always.

I’m in two minds about this. I’ve shot now for over 45 years, on big shoots, medium, small and walked up and everything in between. Unquestionably the sheer beauty of the location is beyond breathtaking but when it comes to the birds they seem almost impossibly high in the main. For mere mortals like myself I’d really question if I was up to the task and then I’d wonder about winging birds which would also sap my confidence. As I get older my love of the magnificent countryside increases yet my once fervent hunger for shooting game has lessened. I got an invitation to a modest shoot recently which put me on the spot since I hadn’t shot game for the last few seasons as I shoot more clay days now. Anyway to not accept would’ve been churlish so I gratefully said yes. I took my little 28 bore O/U and pleased to say shot well bar one runner. Anyway, I look at those birds you shot and look on in awe and wonder Jonny - two of your partridges were probably the finest shots I’ve ever seen. The speed, height and sheer difficulty of those birds were simply off the scale. However, where does this leave us? - are we in danger of too many pricked birds due to the absurd height of those drives? Also are 400+ bird days justifiable anymore and then there’s the task of having to make sure every single one of those birds is eaten? Lastly, how was your shoulder and chin after 400 of those unbelievable 36g No. 4s? I salute the keepers and beating team more than anyone for even making that day possible, the work and effort is phenomenal along with birds that almost defy belief. Anyway I enjoyed watching you shoot incredibly well given the huge task presented, I’d have probably retired after that first partridge of your life it was humbling and magnificent all at the same time. Wow, I was breathless just watching! Simply amazing day that you’ll never forget.

Game shooting for me has always been about the small days with a good group of mates, 100 bag for 9+ guns, part driven part walked up, a truck load of booze and ultimately not too much expense. But I'd love at some point in my life to experience a big day at somewhere like Pennal. This video is what I suspect will be the closest I'll come, was a pleasure to watch.

Nah, some things just aren’t done. That happened to be a pretty exclusive (and expensive) day shooting. It wasn’t going out with your buddies on the back 40. Personally I’d probably enjoy the later just as much but if I’m fortunate enough to hunt partridge in Wale’s before I die, I’m going all in. Obviously Mr Carter’s DT 11 was plenty good enough and I was obviously teasing, but if you showed up with a plastic pump gun they’d probably all feel sorry for you and loan you something appropriate. Then never let you come back.

Great film Johnny really enjoyable but we all need to be honest with ourselves. You aren’t going to kill those birds cleanly and humanely with steel. We need to be honest and accept that on these more extreme days you can only really respect the quarry by using lead shot. Please tell me if you think I’m wrong.

Some of them are out of range, but the majority are in range: when you connect - they die. Connecting with a bird that fast and a true 60 yards is incredibly hard!
