When it comes to tenacity
in records of hauntings,
the Brown Lady of Raynham Hall
is one of the most famous,
with a host of dramatic sightings
since her death in 1726.
Those who have stayed overnight at Raynham Hall
and who have encountered her ghost
describe her appearance as ghastly
and some even say 'malevolent',
this is in contrast to how she was when living,
her beauty & charm was renowned.
In this episode there is a bonus story at the end..
my very own 'ghost story' -
The account of an apparition
I witnessed with a friend,
in Sydney Australia decades ago.
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

Thank you for sharing the brown lady story that was very creepy but yours really was scary. I can’t imagine sitting at a table with friends and all of a sudden there’s a spirit sitting in a chair as well.😅 and for your friend to have seen the exact same thing is even more creepy. Did you ever do any history check to see prior people that might’ve lived in that home? 😄 that would be interesting to find out if it was a certain owner.! anyway, thank you this was fun and cozy and creepy

I remember this from the Patreon site, but to watch again is like savoring an evening around the fire with a best friend who is also an expert storyteller and an all-around sensitive chap (toward ghostly happenings, that is). I think I watched this first in the midst of COVID lockdowns? I am not sure because all is a blur, but this second viewing on the eve of all hallows eve has been delicious. Peace and love, dear Oddie and Odette.

Both fascinating stories, though I prefer yours. I visited a local cemetery with a friend and her Daughter one Halloween night years ago. We had brought along a small tape recorder planning on asking questions aloud in hopes we might get an answer. It was easy to be on edge in that old, cold and silent place that evening. We walked the expansive grounds, we sat, talked, asked questions and listened, most of the time leaving the recorder running. In the end, the night was uneventful, or so we thought, except for the mournful sound of Taps carried on the wind from the distant Army base at lights out. Our Husbands had stayed at my home with our very young children. When we arrived back there just after midnight, we decided to sit in the car and listen to what the recorder had heard. For quite a while it was nothing but us, talking, giggling and rustling along through the headstones. We sat there laughing at our silly selves until stopped silent by the strange whistle that came through the speaker. A close, human, two octave sound, high then lower, that none of us had made nor heard. We were stunned and quiet, looking at each other until asking "was that you?" "did you do that?" "are you sure you didn't?" No people, animals or birds, only us, wind, graves and no explanation for a simple "here I am" sort of whistle over our shoulders from something unseen. Perhaps someone else was in that old cemetery that night, which if I'm honest, frightens me more than the paranormal alternative. I'll never forget that whistle. I'll never forget that night. Happy Halloween, Oddie.

Thank you for covering this story, it has always been one of my favourite ghost tales. My experience is that the petrol station where I work is haunted by the ghost of an old man. The place where the petrol station is once had a pub there, and the old man seems to not want to leave his local! I've come into work in the morning to open up and smelt cigarette smoke before, plus there's also some poltergeist activity; items fall off shelves when there's no-one near by, things get added on to the tills and items go missing only to turn up days later. He seems especially fond of hiding our scissors.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful personal ghost story! It must have been quite shocking to experience a phantom apparition in one's own living quarters. Perhaps the ghostly gentleman liked your company and that of your mate's so much he felt compelled to participate in the conversation. What an honor! Yes, ghosts do exist. Personally I have seen my fair share of phantoms. One was at an early 1700s town square where criminals were also hung for their crimes. I saw a gentleman in historical garb from that era leaning against a lamppost. Naturally I blinked my eyes to look again, but the man had disappeared. So, yes I believe in ghosts. BTW The historical tale of Brown Lady was lovely too. Happy Halloween, Oddie!

Oddie, glad to have you back!! Hope you and Oddette enjoyed your time off and got some well deserved rest!! I have seen 2 ghosts in my lifetime. One human and one animal. I do think that thunderstorms somehow manifests things because b oth times I saw them I was sitting on 2 different porches 30:44 in 2 different states during thunderstorms. I’m a big fan of a good storm!! The first was in North Carolina. A young boy came running across our yard, he reminded me of Ichabod Crane, tall, spindly with gangly arms, dressed in raggedy clothes. I watched him cross the yard in the rain. He ran past me and jumped into the car that was sitting in our driveway!! The second time I was in Idaho, again sitting on my porch during a storm. I am not sure if it was a dog or a wolf, it was as big as an Irish Wolfhound. I could hear something coming from my right hand side and I watched it run up to where I was sitting. It was going at a great speed, and as it got closer to me and past me I could here it breathing hard as he was running. I followed it to my left and at our property line it just vanished!! So I agree there are restless spirits everywhere.

Oh Oddie, where do I start, ah yes, the Brown Lady! That was quite a story! I was taken aback when you said she had "at least" 12 children! OMG! This story reminds me of the first of it's kind in 1966 TV, called "Dark Shadows" (with Barnabus Collins & all kinds of werewolves/vampires) It went on for a few years, I was addicted to it, because at that time I was also studying Spiritualism and psychic phenomena. I was also blessed with this gift from a very young age (12). At (16) I started attending a Spiritualist Church. I always knew I was different, because I would just know things, and could tell if a person was good or evil. I had a lot of experiences with ghosts in my bedroom. (by that I could feel someone else in my double bed, who was not there!) Just all kinds of things. My beautiful Mother, Dolores was also psychic, did volumes of automatic writings which were coming from high teachers in Spirit. So, I loved the Brown Lady Story with no eyes (Creepy!) but...I adored YOUR Psychic story! Loved the pictures & your description of living in an old mansion experience as a young artist! I can't believe it was so ornate & lovely! You were so lucky, to have that fantastic experience & friends who were able to "see" spirit, like you. I find you extremely inspiring, and love to hear more! God Bless you & Oddette, and any furry animals you may have:)) I adore Halloween, and I'm taking advantage of a lot of scary movies! But it's "Your" posts I love best:))

I love your voice! I also like how your videos are a decent length, you can really get immersed. Raynham Hall is one of the first ghost stories I ever read in a book as a child, my first ghost photo. I've grown up in one of the oldest parts of North America to be settled by Europeans, so I'm used to old history, even if it's pretty recent to the rest of the world. Ok, so I've had spooks in graveyards, etc., but here are my most interesting. As a child, we knew a family who owned an old Victorian house - gorgeous old beauty, complete with servants' stairs in the kitchen, full basement, full attic, hardwood floors, grand staircase... the works. I will buy it one day if I ever become ridiculously wealthy, just to keep it preserved and beautiful like they had it. So, they had stories of a ghost called Matilda. I'll tell you their stories before I add my own experience. They saw this middle-aged to older woman with the one long braid, long white sleeping gown, and sleeping bonnet only one time clearly. The first evidence of ghost was glass smashed in the middle of the attic floor when all the glassware had been packed away. They were joking about the house being haunted, heard the glass smash, and went to check. The glass was in the middle of the floor, even if it had been left out, it would have fallen near it's box or off a shelf in that room, not literally in the middle of the floor in another empty room. The second time was finding an old journal that didn't belong to the family, open to a particular date in January, in the middle of the floor, in the same spot as the broken glass... the date was my friend's January birthday. This was also after discussing whether or not the house had activity. They weren't sure if they were supposed to be frightened by these actions, because they house always felt very warm and cozy, so they were just careful about how they talked about things. Someone thought they saw a misty figure walk through a wall near the kitchen and when the checked the house plans, it turns out that powder room had been added and the wall used to not be there. They figured, oh, it's a residual haunt, a servant going into the butler's pantry and causing mischief in the attic, no problem... only it wasn't residual. One night there was a huge storm. My friend’s cousin had fallen asleep in the attic. All of a sudden, her cousin runs into the living room where everyone is relaxing, looking white as a sheet in total panic, eyes huge, and completely out of breath. Before she can even tell anyone what had happened, there was a massive crash and everyone went running upstairs. Where the cousin had been asleep, an enormous tree branch had crashed through the window, there was broken glass everywhere. Now granted, this wasn’t an entire tree that would have killed her, but it would have been quite serious if she had still been lying there asleep, especially with all the glass. Of course, there was the usual flurry of activity or calling for repairs, putting up tarps, moving anything out of the room that needed to be moved, putting down towels, etc., but finally they asked their cousin, why had she woken up just in time? She had seen Matilda. A middle-aged woman, braid, sleeping bonnet, but everything about her was white, had woken her up, by name, telling her she had to wake up, she had to get up, standing over her side, shaking her shoulder, completely solid. Her cousin had been so completely terrified, she ran downstairs in a blind panic. I’ll always remember the concluding thought of friend’s re-telling, her cousin whispered “she saved me.” For me, I saw Matilda in a second floor window, folding bedding. It was Easter Eve and I was in the backyard, walking around to the carriage house. I was looking up at the house as I walked because the sun was just starting to go down, the light just barely starting to change and I thought it was lovely. I saw a sheet with pulls at the top like someone was holding it in their fingers. Then it was just slowly moved away. I startled me for some reason, but I tried to calm myself down, thinking it was my friend’s mother, but then I heard voices. I came around the front, and this is within seconds by the way, and there was my friend talking with her father on the front steps. He had just arrived from another state… without his wife. There was no one else in the house… at least not physically. Later that evening, I was looking out from the kitchen towards the front of the house. I thought I saw my friend’s father walking in the dining room, his shoulder poking into my view in the frame of the kitchen archway… again I felt startled for no reason, so I tried to let it go, but then I heard my friend’s father call to us from the front parlor. He was three rooms away from the kitchen and there was no way to go from the dining room where I thought I had seen him to where he was sitting without walking straight down the pathway of my vision. I had seen a little boy peeking in at us dyeing Easter eggs. So, all in all, friendly experiences, even protective. The family feels that Matilda was a servant or nanny who still watches over those in the house. She just wants them to know she, and maybe others, are there too. Another experience I will relate was in a graveyard in the afternoon. I was in college, exploring a neighborhood close to a famous sea battle that had happened, literally a few hundred yards off shore. I was wearing a long skirt and as I passed a particular row of stones I felt the hem catching more than it had before, like it was pulled, caught on a solid root or something. When I looked down, I saw this little girl all dressed in black with a black veil. She was huddled up against a headstone about four or five plots away from me. Her body was the same size as the stone she was huddled against. She was completely solid and I heard in my head, clear as day, “Mommy?” She was there a few seconds, I blinked, and she was gone. When I checked the stones, there was a young woman who had died in her early to mid-twenties in childbirth, the little lamb marker next to her for her baby who also had not survived, but next to them, was a girl’s grave. By the names and dates, she had lost her mother at five or six years old in the 1850’s and only lived another two years herself. I must have seen her as she was on the day of her mother’s funeral. My long hair and long skirt must have seemed familiar to her. I stayed for a while with my friend there too. I wanted to be sure the little girl wasn’t lost. I think they’re at peace, I think it was just a little time-skip or something like that. I just really do hope that she’s all right. There’s a much scarier encounter I once had, but I think I’ll save that for later… HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

Thank you so much for your kind feedback, Elizabeth, much appreciated 😊 Thank you also for sharing your very interesting story, I do love it when people share paranormal experiences with me. It’s interesting that some intelligent hauntings have aspects of a residual haunting, and yet there is interaction with the living. For instance, somebody else posted that his wife saw a spirit washing the dishes at the sink, but there was no dishes and no water in the sink, but the spirit was going through the motions, and then the spirit turned around, looked at her directly and smiled - which shows it’s an intelligent haunting, I suspect that they are living in that timeline, but can interact with ours. Just like the lady with the long braid. It’s extra heartwarming that she is looking out for the family who live in the house.

August, 1985. Dallas, Texas. The air conditioning wasn't working. I was sleeping under a sheet, with a ceiling fan running, overhead. I was awakened by extreme cold. I rolled over on my back, opened my eyes, and saw a man standing at the foot of the bed, staring down it me. I wasn't alarmed; in fact, as I tried to focus in in his trench coat and fedora, he faded away. A few days later I drummed up the courage to tell the man I was sharing the house with. He had a dumbfounded look on his face, and didn't say anything for what seemed like minutes. Finally he said, "I saw the same 'man' when I moved into the house." (I had just moved into the house.) I never saw the apparition again, though I often wished he'd come back for a visit!

This was an interesting tale Oddie, and certainly, the treatment Dorothy was said to have suffered in the manse is the stuff of which vengeful spirits are made. As you know, I do believe that there are various entities and energies that can persist after death. Very glad you enjoyed it my dear Tamarra, yes, I often wonder whether some of the the malevolent ones are made up of thought forms or clusters of entities? Especially when the person was not malevolent in life. Thank you for your very kind words dear friend, my sensitivity felt like a bane to me in those days - now I’ve come to appreciate it. Perhaps you missed my video about Aleister Crowley‘s former house Boleskine, that was the last video I did, but I do not recall you commenting on it? Sending you both also much love and light, our holidays are over and now we are back to work, and I can’t believe that Christmas is just around the corner. Take care my friend! ☀️

@@ObsoleteOddity Yes, often the malevolent expressions are collections of lower astral entities, and not actual remnants of human lives. Many benign “haunting” are like a photographic replay, and not attended with conscious awareness, while others have unfinished business, and will remain until they complete it, or allow themselves to move along. Others are unaware they are dead. It can easily feel like a bane rather than a gift…but once we get a handle on our own sensitivity and empathy, we can do a lot of good with it. I am sorry I missed your piece on Crowley, I will search it up. It likely happened when Richard was in the ICU, and there were several deaths in a short space of time. I am getting out of hospital again myself today, after another round of anemia. I was not much focused on my normal doings for awhile there…but I will find the presentation, enjoy sharing it with Richard, and definitely comment now that things are getting back to normal. Bright Blessings, and much love.✨🖤🇨🇦

@tamarrajames3590 @tamarrajames3590 yes, I was always aware of intelligent and residual hauntings, but it’s only in the last several years that I discovered that some of them are actually group entities, I find it fascinating and rather alarming for the less stronger entities who are pulled into that group. I wonder if they become a single focused consciousness, or are separate and unaware of each other? Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve been in hospital again, and having to worry about Richard as well - it must be very distressing. Sending you psychic hugs , hopefully that is your last stay in hospital. I will include the link to that video in a separate comment, in case KZbin put it into your held for review folder. @@ObsoleteOddity Thank you so much Oddie…and yes, it is very stressful being stuck in hospital with Richard home on his own. Fortunately I am home again now, and with a little lunch we will find the root cause of the anemia and vertigo next month. I am so over hospitals at this point. Most of the group entities are aware of each other, but are directed by the strongest one, which is not at all pleasant for the less powerful ones drawn in. Their energy is used to strengthen the aggregate, like psychic vampirism, and they can’t break free. I have, on occasion, been able to disentangle one, but it is difficult to do. That house where you had your experience with the garrulous entity looks like it has a lot of history, and was likely pretty active. Active sites are a magnet for wandering ones, and tend to grow in intensity over time. Ultimately they are home to a number of manifestations, none of which have a previous history with the place. Hugging you right back my friend. Light and love…🖤🇨🇦

Another interesting video, and thanks for sharing your own ghost encounter. I had one myself some years ago. I was at my workplace one Saturday morning finishing up a quick project. I was alone in the building. Suddenly, I thought I saw movement. Figuring it was a coworker, I looked up and saw a very sudden flash of red. It was a trick of the light sort of thing. Thinking nothing of it, I went back to work. A few days later, our staff got to talking about a supposed ghost in our building. This ghost was of a fellow who had died there years earlier. I mentioned seeing that flash of red and suddenly heard a fact that was new to me. This man usually wore a red jacket.

And thank you for sharing yours! It’s always that validation when somebody provides a fact that supports what you have witnessed, that really confirms it. I remember being at a dinner party at a very old cottage in Sydney, they had French windows, and we were all seated at the table, - we were staring outside at the courtyard, and suddenly a figure in a flowing white dress, appeared, and disappeared just as suddenly, but again, we all witnessed it - and then the host become very quiet, and didn’t want to discuss it. His wife told us afterwards that he had seen this apparition many times and was having nightmares about it.

The thought of seeing an apparition is scary enough, but an eyeless one would give me a heart attack. My daughter, who is now 7 years old, speaks of a faceless apparition she saw when she was about 2. She says though it had no face, she knew it was looking at her. I believe her, as she has spoken of this ghost for years now and it was scary enough for her not to go into her grandmother's room at night. That room happened to be where the previous homeowner died in bed.

I agree that the spectre of the man in olive suit and matching waistcoat, was not a mere "projection" of your mind but an actual manifestation of a soul from the past who probably was unaware that he already crossed the great divide. He could either be from the Victorian or Edwardian era. Remember, truth is stranger than fiction.

Thanks Oddie. Love the channel. I've seen 4 ghosts in my life . The first to visit was an elderly couple standing over my bed. I was 5 so I don't know if I did see them or not. The second visit was from my brother who had died a month before that. I was driving home with my mother. She was upset that she had not received a sign from him as I and many of our family and friends had said they had seen. I asked my brother to show mum a sign. 200 metres further down the road we were about to cross a bridge, a man suddenly appeared in front of our car walking alongside the road. He was white and see- through. I swore mum had drove through him. It was unmistakably my brother. My mum said "did you see that, do I turn around." I told her ,no, that was her sign and to keep driving. My sister in law, my brother's wife later told me my brother would run out of petrol there and have to walk to town about 2 km away. A saw another ghost when I lived in Randwick. I was 19 and walking home from the duke of Gloucester pub that was across the road from my house. Again white and see through but this time a little girl in the park. She appeared 20 m ahead of us. We wondered why such a little girl should be out so late. We closed the distance to 10 metres then she disappeared. The last ghost was in 2018 in Brisbane. Our neighbours were away on holiday. My partner and I were in our backyard when we saw again a white a see-through apparition in our neighbours yard. An elderly man .my partner recognised the man. He was a coworkers grandfather who had died in the house 4 years before that. So you could say I'm a believer and three of the sightings there were other witnesses. There more things between heaven and earth Horatio then are dreamt of in man's philosophies.

No, it was tiny little Bieler park. Right across from Guilderthorpe. You had to walk through it to get to the DOG. I watched your story on the murders in queens Park. I got a shiver as I stupidly used to walk home in the dark from Bondi junction thru queens Park.

When they noticed me, I instantly knew that I was not supposed to tell my aunt. They were translucent, tall and slender, all males, in robes. My aunt is 94 and I believe she is a saint. You have a very interesting way to bring these stories to life as you tell them. I could listen to you talking about this all-day long LOL. I've had ghost experiences all my life, but the strangest one was in the very apartment we still live in now. I was in the bigger bedroom changing when from my left I saw a gentleman I'd say in his mid-twenties to early thirties walk from the smaller bedroom. He just walked past and into the living room and I presume to the door to leave the apartment. What made it the strangest experience is he looked as if he was made of blue glass. I only ever saw him that one time. This was a bit after my father in-law blessed the apartment. He was then an active deacon of the roman catholic church. I have never seen any other ghost in any color before or since. Very strange.

Hi Oddy, Thanks for another fascinating story just in time for Halloween. Thanks for sharing your ghost story! Loved it! Fabulous your friend saw ghost too! Makes story even better! Plus, yes, I do believe in ghosts. I have had a few ghostly happenings. I actually mentioned it to you before.in past years. But when I was a little girl I was in bed and my bedroom door was open and I woke up with a start to see a pretty and slim 30 years old lady, hair in a bun wearing a Victorian era dress walk down my long hallway into my bathroom. She was pretty clear, and I thought she was a real person. I got up to look in the bathroom and of course nothing was there. It was a ghost. She was a friendly one and probably lived nearby or torn down home on the site of my home. Because I know she was not living in my home because my family was the first family living there when it was built. Another time I was in an old home in a now empty basement area and for about a minute I could hear 1920's jazz age or roaring twenties music playing. Like Speakeasy music. I could almost see the flappers dancing very fast and the man wildly playing the piano as the flappers danced! These ghostly occurrences really happened! No joke! I am not a psychic or a medium. But I think I can pick up on some spirit things. By the way pool in America is called "Pool" "Billiards" or "Snooker" like you said. Love your stories, Oddy. All the best to you dear! ❤

I do feel sorry for the lady, especially not being allowed to see her children. Wonder why did she even marry him if she didn't love him? I know back then, women were not allowed to have a job or even vote. It seamed all about property and money Marriage were mostly pre arranged and the poor girl had no say in objecting. I am a skeptic when a picture of what supposed to be a ghost is shown. The picture of the lady looks fake to me. I also am a skeptic on these ghost tours being held only at a certain time. I enjoyed both stories, probably because of the straightforward way in which you tell them without embellishment. My view of ghosts tends towards the residual haunting rather than a return of the dead. Possibly an imprint of an occurrence captured under extreme emotion (perhaps happiness in the case of your tableau or despair in the case of Raynham) and replayed when the conditions are right. I understand your point about the chair, but presumably if you thought the layout of your furniture was right in that room in your day, perhaps someone in the previous century thought so too. Certainly the electrical power of the thunderstorm played a part. I hope one day we do understand what causes appiritions. It shouldn't diminish the wonder if them even if we know why they occur. After all, we understand why rainbows occur, but still appreciate them when seen.

Very glad you enjoyed the presentation, thank you so much for your positive feedback. Well, it’s doubtful, there would’ve been a chair in that position in that room, as it had been originally a master bedroom, so the bed would’ve been in the position where the chair was. Plus even if there had been a chair there back in the day, the likelihood of it being in the exact same position, is minuscule. But it would be indeed, very interesting to know why such an apparition occurs.

I can see things, like things that have happened in the past. Like if someone was hanged or hanged themselves or if a building burned down. And sometimes I can sense things, if people are not quite right or if moods and feelings change of if there's something or someone there when nobody can see anything. But can't everyone do those things? I'm also always right when like you look at the history of places after I see things like that

That picture with the smoky outline of a figure is to scare the crap out of me when I was young. But I still looked at with fascination. I'm grown now so it's not scary anymore😏

Oh yes I do believe in ghost! Even though I haven't ever seen one, I think. Loved this story immensely!

Yes i believe in ghosts or spirits....had personal experiences myself on a few occasions, one actually moved my front room door handle at such a rate it frightened the life out of me, this handle in particular was generally very stiff so that whatever it was that was doing it took me by surprise.

Greetings Oddie! Rest assured, you and your friend are not crazy. These Spirts are very real indeed. I was taught that we are a Spirit who lives in a body and has a soul. You and your friend are sensitive to the Spirit world. You have been blessed to see what many are unable to. As always, keep up the great work that you do and Happy Halloween!💕😻💕
