The Eyes of Texas performed by The Longhorn Band
The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
All the live long day.
The Eyes of Texas are upon you
You can not get away
Do not think you can escape them
At night or early in the morn'
The Eyes of Texas are upon you
'Till Gabriel blows his horn

How neat it is that the melody is the same as “I’ve been working on the railroad.” I have a CD with patriotic songs, including this which I play around this time of year(with Fourth of July 🇺🇸 on the way) and of course I’ve always noticed this, so I just had to look it up here on KZbin. Texas legend Ricky Williams' opinion on the song: "I think it's important to understand our history and to understand where the song came from, but I think it's more powerful to transform the meaning of the song and the definition of the song rather than trying to erase our history like it never existed." Exact same melody, yes. However, ironically someone said this song was actually written first, in 1903 and I’ve been working on the Railroad was written in 1927.

I graduated in 1991. (BBA). The song is only played at the end of the game. If you don't like it, just attend another school. We don't want anymore people in Austin. It's already full of a bunch of people who don't really belong there......the football players, who want the song changed, would NEVER get in based on their academic record. They aren't real student athletes like the Naval Academy. Well, maybe 5 out of the 100 on the roster might get in. They are taking an enrollment spot of a REAL student. That's the reality of the situation there.

The song is based on a saying in 1860 by Robert E Lee: "The eyes of the South are upon you", meaning "make the South proud". But yes, it's a very long stretch to think this song is racist....just shows you how insane liberals have become.

In an October 2018 article in “The Daily Texan,” titled “UT must educate new students on racism of ‘The Eyes of Texas,“ author Maggie Lazaroski explains that the author of the song, John Sinclair, was a member of the Varsity Minstrel Show, a performance group that “perpetuated the notion that African-Americans were lesser than whites.” Lazaroski also posits that UT should be more transparent to incoming students about the songs origins, giving them the choice whether or not they want to participate in the tradition. African-American UT senior Joshua Ellis told the Dallas Morning News in February 2019 that after learning about the song’s racist origins, he refused to sing it. “After I took Dr. Gordon’s class during my freshman year, I immediately stopped singing the song. At football games, I sit down during the song and don’t even acknowledge it.”
