Former Boeing.... I spent time at our St Louis plant where both F-15's and F/A-18's are built. Good to see mods on the F-15. Canted vertical stabilizers like those on F-18 really help improve stealth. Not mentioned but obvious to the trained eye, inlet ducts on F-15 mod to hide front turbine blades. Old design presented enemy radar with 2 highly reflective front compressor turbine blades. F-18 was designed that way from the start. Also, internal weapons bays really help. F-18 was quite stealthy until fuel tanks and weapons loaded on the external hard points.

North Vietnam - Military fighter aircraft in that war were designed to be able to take just one hit in the hydraulic system and still be able to fly the aircraft (but not necessarily land it) which caused many pilots to bail out over enemy territory if more than one hydraulic system hit was taken, e.g Navy pilot John McCain ejection. As a result, the USAF required that the design of the F-15 be able to take two hits anywhere in the hydraulic system and still be able fly the aircraft (again not necessarily land). This requirement caused MCAIR to come up with many hydraulic system innovations that have been used ever since.

Boeing offered the Silent Eagle for Korean marketing, but it lost to the F-35. In fact, it was questionable whether it was even a stealth aircraft. If the conformal fuel tank is removed, the cruising range is fatally reduced, making it much worse than the F-15E. The inclination angle of the weapon bay and vertical tail fins required a lot of development costs. It is a good thing that Korea chose the F-35.
@LRRPFco52

Silent Eagle didn't exist. It was a silly mock-up demanded by inept Boeing leadership who didn't know anything about what it takes to design and build a stealth aircraft. It was a gimmick trying to be passed off as something with potential, and failed from the 1st bulkhead onward.
@heatblast876
@heatblast876 2 жыл бұрын
Actually you will surprise that the SE 15 which is silent eagle was not a stealth aircraft at all as it was not so stealthly such as F22 RCS 0.0001m2, F35 RCS 0.005m2, SU57 RCS 0.01m2 (remember the prototype model of SU57 which is T50 has the RCS of 0.1m2 which has less RAM coating with exposed rivets and no radar blockers on it and it was an test/prototype model) and J20 RCS 0.05m2~0.08m2 so the SE 15 was not so stealthly at all, why because the SE 15 has the RCS around 1m2 to 3m2 or greater. At the same time it will be detect on radar from a long range of around 90 to 80 miles at the first place. And it was not a stealth aircraft at all, but rather it was an standard aircraft by putting RAM coating and modern cockpit display on it, which remains me of an old rust bucket car with new engine and digital custom colors on it.
@LRRPFco52
@LRRPFco52 2 жыл бұрын
@@heatblast876 F-35 RCS values are smaller than the combat coded F-22As. F-22s have splitter plate inlets, while F-35s have DSI and far superior Carbon Nanotube RAM. The booms, vertical and horizontal stabs are carbon fiber construction as well, which is RF transparent. Su-57 is a faulty design from the first bulkhead rearward. I can't believe they did that with it.
@heatblast876
@heatblast876 2 жыл бұрын
@@LRRPFco52 No, the F22 has better stealth feature capabilities and characteristics compare to F35, while yes F35 has upgraded stealth coating compared to F22 but still the F35 was not so stealthly as the F22. Now the SU57, actually the serial production model of SU57 has improved the Stealth capabilities and able to reduced the RCS around 0.01m2 (as the size of the human fist or a bird) by applying 30% RAM coating on it making more stealthily than the prototype model T50, while the T50 has less RAM coating with exposed rivets, back part of the engine nacelles, unfixed of weapons door, no radar blockers on it and exposed spectrum of IRST making it the RCS around 0.1m2 as the same size of the F/A 18 and rafale. So yes the serial production of SU57 has improved the Stealth capabilities and able to reduced the RCS of 0.01m2 so it goes to the stealth category, but still it is not as stealthly as the F22 and F35 which has the RCS around 0.0001m2 (as the size of the small marble) and 0.005m2 (as the size of the pin ball). The improved model of SU57 has improved a lot, but still it needs to improve it.
@heatblast876
@heatblast876 2 жыл бұрын
@@денисбаженов-щ1б Actually they have 1st operational batch of SU57 in Russia, but they have more than 6 or 8 of them serially built, while the prototype model of SU57 which is T50 has around 12 of them, so I will not count them because they are not production model at all.

I really like the idea of upgrading the F15 platform, to bad Boeing choose to increase the price so much. I would have hoped we could have replaced a lot of D's and E's with this upgrade, even ideally using the existing aircraft. The US sends a lot of aircraft into third-world countries on various missions and being able to use something that does not reveal all the tricks of the new aircraft if one is crashed or otherwise compromised would keep down our prices. Maybe we should look into buying that Korean jet to replace our C's and D's. I would guess that Korea would turn around buy more US equipment almost immediately with the profits. One has to remember that these jets are so expensive that they are major inputs into defense budgets.

I love the idea of this aircraft - and although the observability (or lack thereof) comes nowhere near a 22 or a 35, the sheer volume of ordinance these aircraft can handle is a major asset IMO. Use low observability aircraft in conjunction with electronic warfare to suppress enemy air defences, and let the weapons platforms do the damage.

Note that the F35 can carry a lot of ordinance if it doesn’t care about stealth. It too has wing pylons, it’s just not used when it’s required to keep RCS low.

The problem is the Eagle can actually carry just 1500lbs more than the F-35. Obviously we both know that F-35 loses basically all the stealth in that configuration. But so would the F-15. And in our doctrine we already use F-35 + F-15 groups, where F-35 works as an AWACS/C&C, and F-15 is a "bomb/missile truck". So adding stealth to F-15 would change basically nothing in this doctrine. Plus a single unit upgrade would cost 2x the cost of an F-35. The idea was interesting, but the F-22/35 made it obsolete, it's just a whole ton less capability for the same money. But it looks cool af, don't get me wrong.
@yomama629
@yomama629 Жыл бұрын
the thing is that if you have F-22/F-35/B-2/B-21 perform SEAD you don't need a semi-stealthy airframe to do the bomb truck missions afterwards. A regular F-15E will be able to do just fine in uncontested airspace

Interesting story. The original F15 design was "Not a Pound for Air to Ground". It was a dedicated fighter platform. Period. But the Israeli's had a need for both a fighter and long range bomber. They converted some of their F15 Baz platforms into a bomb truck configuration when they needed to attack the PLO HQ in Hammam al-Shatt, Tunisia. Once MD understood that not only could they have a state of the art first rate fighter but a bomber also? they submitted their F15E design to go up against the F16 XL and won the competition. Also, the F15 was very much a design of the 70's not 80's

With problems continuing to plague the F-35, the forced, early retirement of the F-22 Raptor, the grounding of several B-2 Spirit bombers and the long rollout of the NGAD 6/7 generation aircraft, one could be tempted to evaluate the decision making process and fund spending process surrounding U.S. aircraft. I am not sure if the Russian Mig-31 Foxhound could have done that either. That is where F-15 Eagle endeared itself and you may have missed that.

The F-15 is like an old LeMans race car crazy powerful and handles just as well. The only problem is that under the skin there is not seat warmers or air conditioning. A whole new jet needs to be built in order to get all the nice bells and whistles. The F-35 and F-22 are like the Viper ACR and Bugatti Veyron. Just as fast and maneuverable but with leather seats and Bose sound systems.

In the Israeli Air Force the F-15 is upgraded in some versions from late 70s & early 80s will serve till 2040 - 60 years in service. That means that the F-15 EX could serve till next century!! Which is leading to an extraordinary record of more than 130 years of service!!

Weapon and electronics bays in the conformal fuel tanks was planned in from the beginning. F-22 numbers are going lower. Upgrades should be in order, rather than limiting F-22 capability and making the F-22 fleet smaller. Some WAG’s can be made, but actual reasoning is for this is minimal.

When your 50 year old platform is so highly capable you just slap some stealth paint on and upgrade the engines because it’s just far more efficient to make the old plane better rather than develop newer ones. F15 Mechachad.

I remember F-15s with flat thrust-vectoring nozzles, a canard, and a streamlined airframe in the movie Patlabor 2. I believe it could be a good design for stealth F-15 with a bit additional maneuver improvement.

There's nothing you can do to the F-15 airframe to make it stealthy. The STOL/MTD even less so. The whole purpose of that testbed was to research technologies that were used for ATF propulsion and intended features for STOL, which were later dropped from the ATF program. Thrust-vectoring and super-maneuverability were incorporated into the F-22A. Pratt & Whitney learned a lot about how to manage airflow, compression ratios, and materials science for TV engines from the STOL/MTD F-15.

I have to ask: does it matter how large a radar cross-section is as long as the radar can tell it's big enough to be a plane? I'm honestly not sure whether radar finds it easier to detect objects with a larger radar cross-section (but not larger physical size) from further away, but even that question doesn't change the fundamental context. The reality is that as long as your plane's cross-section doesn't fit below that radar threshold for stealth - where the radar can't tell if an object is a plane or not - then it doesn't count as stealth anyway, and it doesn't matter how large the cross-section is (well, at least as long as it's not ridiculously large - there might be a limit determined by the detection capacity of radar). But what cross-section size would all these stealthy improvements have gained the silent eagle? It's not mentioned. Makes it hard to say whether it was a good idea. The problem with relying on paint to almost completely improve a craft's stealthiness is that it is really expensive (well, last time I heard, but my info could be out of date), and there has to be a good reason to use it. If you're going to only improve a craft's radar cross-section from "terrible" to "okay", then what are you really gaining when you could use it to make a different craft with a small cross-section properly "stealth." Also, sacrificing the fuel tanks sounds possibly problematic, so how much fuel capacity would have been lost and what would the new range have been?

And now the F-15EX is the greatest fighter jet on earth without question. Stealthy it is not, but that doesnt matter with the powerset it has. Its more powerful than an F-22 when it comes to engine power, its also faster and it can do SO much more. It can also perform FAR more tasks with minimal modifications than ANY stealth jet.

There isn't really value in a "stealth" F-15. The most sensible fleet integration would be the F-15EX loaded up with as many AIM-260s as it can carry, while an F-35 that is further ahead marks targets through datalink for the Eagle to launch at.
