Rip my old friend and guide Damien Albert...your eternal laugh still echoes in my head

I boarded La Grave in 91.. The second year they opened it for the ski season.. A room, packed lunch and guide was $37.. The guide was mandatory.. I could have possible been the first to snowboard La Grave.. Snowboarding was just starting to catch on in Europe in 91.. I had been boarding since 84 in Alberta, Canada..

Holla, I lived and worked in Les 2 Alpes 82 to 92, and did La Grave, in snowboard in the middle 1980's several times, form the top ....

I skied La Grave many years during the 90's and early 2000 when I did most of the classics, Pans de Rideaux, Chirouze , not to mention tree skiing on snowy days under the cable car. It leaves you with memories for your whole life. Unfortunately, it has become too crowded. I have now gone in search for the tiny forgotten ski resorts that dot the French, Swiss and Italian Alps, the ones that are out of the way, the places that you can only reach with touring equipment and several hours of hiking. You can get powder days when only you are making tracks and the magic of feeling isolated from the rest of humanity is still alive.

Same boat, Chamonix and la grave are so crowded I'll never go again. Skied these in the 80's 90's last time in 2010. So crowded with posers you couldn't get on the valley buses. So I go elsewhere.

LG wasn't that busy on middle of weeks on seasons 2014...2018 when I was around. On weekend bluebird mornings it was just better to chill out. I just went to that small pub opposite side of the road and had a coffee or a beer while and a snack while waiting the que to vanish.. which was about 10AM usually. Then I took a condola of my own without all the stressed people, started righ taway with Triffide 1 or 2 which were quite often not tracked at all. Skied the skiers right of Vallon to the Village. Took lift up... After P2 it was easy to observe if some group had allready followed my tracks to T1 and T2 and if the track to P2 had been opened... From P2 all the nice forrest runs are available after skiing the Triffides...

It is indeed one of the best freeride spots of the world in a fantastic atmosphere due to the wild environment and that local relaxed freeride community. I have been here a couple of times and skied already with the American guide Joe Vallone when he just arrived here in La Grave, a great guy!

Sick video!! Just wondering, at 12:13 , isnt it sketchy to rappel rope on rope? couldnt the friction created by the cordellete, cut the rope as you pull it down?
@GUIDESPERSPECTIVE6 жыл бұрын
Its a normal practice if it's a one time use or bail situation to not leave a carabiner. All three rappelled on the rope so it was no friction. If you were to lower or top rope through that configuration, yes you could cut the material. The rope was pulled after three rappels so it was only static loading for the rappels with no moving rope. When the rope is pulled it is unweighted, so yes it could potentially fry the material. That line has only been skied three times, That was the third descent of the couloir in 4 years and all the 3 descents, Benji in the video was on. He opened the line. So the anchor is being reset or something different every year, It is not a trade route and the anchors are not fixed. They may or may not be there, but not to many people are going after lines like this because there are never tracks to follow there. 🤣
